CAPTAIN AMERICA: NEW WORLD ORDER Star Tim Blake Nelson On Getting To Return As The Leader

During the recent D23 expo, we learned that Tim Blake Nelson would reprise the role of Dr. Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, in Captain America: New World Order, and the actor has now addressed his return.

Tim Blake Nelson debuted as Doctor Samuel Sterns in The Incredible Hulk, and even though the movie set-up his return as the villainous Leader, nobody really expected to see the actor in the MCU again.

Then, during this past weekend's D23 Expo, it was announced that Nelson would reprise the role for the upcoming Captain America: New World Order, with The Leader set as the sequel's main antagonist.

During a post-D23 interview, Nelson said he was "delighted" for the opportunity to play Sterns again. "Marvel is part of cinema history and that I get to be a part of of that is an absolute honor, and thank you for for sticking with the Leader,” he added.

Towards the end of The Incredible Hulk, Sterns began his transformation into the super-smart baddie when some of Bruce Banner's blood poured into an open wound on his head. Nelson has previously revealed that he had originally signed on for three movies before Mark Ruffalo stepped in to replace Edward Norton as Banner and the studio took things in another direction.

We're not sure exactly how The Leader will factor into New World Order, but there's a lot of speculation that the character has been pulling the strings in various other MCU projects (sending the Wrecking Crew after She-Hulk's blood, for example).

"We are all paranoid, and hopefully we're all thrilled as well. This is a movie, like the previous Captain American movies, that [leans] into the tradition of this genre," director Julius Onah teased in a recent interview. "And what's so great in this film is Sam Wilson has an incredible adversary in The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, this brilliant mastermind who's always 1-2-3-4 steps ahead."

Nelson will join Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, Shira Haas as Israeli superheroine Sabra, the returning Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, and Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon.

Captain America: New World Order is set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.

I'm calling it now, Todd from She-Hulk (who showed back up today) is going to end up being Samuel Stern's son and he's involved in someone trying to get She-Hulk's blood.

@thewanderer - hey wow man I said the same thing. I added that he'll be based on Gremlin, the son of Gargoyle, and pivot into Armored Wars as Titanium Man. The actor described Todd as a wanna-be Stark so it's all fits nicely especially after learning that the Leader will be in New Workd Order, tying everything together

@ager - I don’t know that they’ll go that far with him, but he definitely strikes me as someone who could be Tim Blake Nelson’s son and someone who got some of his dad’s intelligence and used it to make himself rich.

I could be wrong, but I’m seeing the seeds of the formation of the Masters of Evil, leading into Secret Wars.

There’s threads stringing all of these together:

Black Widow (Red Guardian, Yelena, Val, Taskmaster)

Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Val, Zemo, Dora Milaje, US Agent, Sharon Carter)

She-Hulk (The Leader?)

Wakanda Forever (Dora Milaje, Riri, Everett Ross, Attuma)

Secret Invasion (Rhoadie, Everett Ross, virtually anyone else)

A New World Order (The Leader, Bucky? She-Hulk? Abomination?)

Thunderbolts (Yelena, Bucky, Red Guardian, Val, US Agent, Taskmaster, Zemo?)

Ironheart (Riri, who else? Shuri? Sharon Carter?)

Armor Wars ( Rhoadie, Sharon Carter?)

Masters of Evil:

The Leader
Zemo
Abomination
Attuma
Sharon Carter?

And the Shadow of Dr. Doom looming large over all of it.

@thewanderer - they can (and should) do big things with Carter

Even though it's not the first villain I think of as an adversary for Sam, I think it's actually an interesting choice. They already did the spy paranoia with Winter Soldier, and now they still do the paranoia thriller but with a new angle

@bkmeijer1 - Not only that but it also lessens the likeness to the show and gets a powered villain, likely some horrifying mutated super soldiers rather than iCarly, sheesh

I'll watch anything with Tim Blake-Nelson in it, one of the best (character) actors of our generation

Calling it now...

Sam Wilson will get some sort of super soldier serum by the end of the movie.

@BringFFtoMCU - I doubt it. Part of the point about cap Sam is he isn’t a super soldier and how he overcomes that

@BringFFtoMCU - Nah, the biggest point in Sam becoming the new Captain america (both in the comics and mcu) is the fact that he is not a super soldier, "just" a soldier doing the right thing.

Another talent that would have been a shame to waste. Glad he's back in the pool.
