Mary Elizabeth Winstead Downplays Rumors Of Involvement with CAPTAIN AMERICA Sequel

Addressing past Captain America: The Winter Soldier rumors and previously auditioning for Justice League's Wonder Woman, Winstead says she'd reconsider either roles, but only if...

The majority of roles in Marvel’s 2014 “Phase 2” entry Captain America: The Winter Soldier have seemingly been filled. However, an actress has yet to be named for the “political” action thriller’s female lead, for which a shortlist of contenders made rounds back in October.

And despite not appearing on that list, shortly after it surfaced, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead was said to have the inside track on the role, which was believed to be Sharon Carter. But when HeyUGuys recently caught up with the Scott Pilgrim actress and asked about the rumors, she said:

“To be honest, that was kind of a rumor that I don't know where it came from. I honestly don't know, but it's great,” she continued. But if asked, would the actress be up for the role, or maybe even re-audition for the Wonder Woman part in the upcoming Justice League movie?

“I would love to if it was the right part. That's what everything is about; finding the right role. And I think especially those kind of movies are such a big commitment. They're fantastic, but if you find yourself in a role that you don't feel suits you...you could be playing that role for the rest of your career and that wouldn't be the happiest outcome. So, for me I think I'm just very pragmatic and careful about those things because I wanna make sure I make the right choices for myself. And not just for the Agents, the fans or whoever.”

In related news, there's been speculation that the actress behind Sharon Carter's Aunt Peggy Carter, Hayley Atwell, will return for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And amid a recent interview with ES Magazine, the English actress unquotedly confirmed her involvement; or at least failed to deny it. For a video of the above quotes from Winstead, skip to 5:30 mark HERE. What do you think?

Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D, and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.

Starring Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joe Russo & Anthony Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “Captain America” first published in 1941 and a comics institution ever since. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is scheduled for release on April 4, 2014. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. And in addition, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel (title TBA) on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

Turning Atwell blond and making her play the niece of the character she played on part 1 would be just lazy casting. I mean, it's known that Sharon looks like her aunt in the comics, but not to the point where she's a blond-haired palette swap.

The front-runner for the lead female role in CA:TWS is supposed to be Jessica Brown Findlay.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead was my top choice for MJ, but that role went to Shailene Woodley.

@intruder Abbie Cornish would be perfect!

I think the role will go to Jessica Brown Findlay.
She's gained a lot of buzz in the states and last time i checked, she still has yet to sign the contract for the next season of Downton Abbey, so she'll have plenty of free time to film Captain America.

MEW should be April O'Neil, in TMNT.
She's really good in Smashed. Shit movie, though, but an awesome performance.

@CherryBomb I just want the role to be cast already. They keep throwing all these names at us.

First I was excited that Imogen Poots might get the role, then it turns out she's out of contention and now Jessica Brown Findlay is possibly the front-runner, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead keeps getting mentioned.

Lol, it's getting hard to keep up. They're are all gorgeous and great actresses. Just cast them all in different roles in CA:TWS. Problem solved. :P

@mgeoff88 I agree! It's annoying because out of all the suggestions they've released, all of them are very talented, there's no weak link.

I'd personally prefer Imogen Poots from the list, but Jessica is a great choice too, i just hope they make her blonde.

she say's she do it if that was a good role, so far marvel don't denial the interest on her, and we don't know, maybe they've send her the script after the ''rumors''.

She don't denial either, so will have to wait and see. Just because she don't know how the ''rumors'' stars dosen't mean is not true. Mary is smart. Nothing is offical yet so why confirm something.

@CherryBomb Imogen Poots was my first choice, but she's out for sure.

I've only seen Jessica Brown Findlay on an episode of Misfits. I thought she did an excellent job though. She was convincing as a crazy-superpowered cult leader.

Don't worry, I'm sure she will go blonde for the role. :)

naaaa...she don't fit the character. she's my ideal Jean Grey for an X-Men reboot to Adrianne Palicki's Emma Frost.
