POLL: What Did You Think Of Captain America: TFA?

Arguably the most anticipated movie so far from Marvel Studios. Did Joe Johnston's take on The Star Spangled Avenger deliver in your opinion?

No, I haven't even seen this yet! It's not released here until Friday. But most of you guys will have seen it by now I'm sure. So what's the verdict CBMers? After the generally great first reactions among critics a few negative reviews have also crept in there. And Cap is currently sitting at a respectable but not earth shattering 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many of the more negative reviews citing a bit of a lack of edge and a rushed third act as big faults with the movie. Now I haven't seen it like I said so can't comment, but would you say that is a fair representation or where you pleased with Marvel's last stand alone flick leading up to The Avengers?

it wasn't excellent, but very good.

***SPOILER***

The first two acts are fantastic. Its when Cap starts going to war where things feel rushed. By the time he finally puts the costume on, they show all of his exploits as Captain America in one montage. Then of course, he goes on his final mission to take down Red Skull. But for all the buildup, i feel like it fell short just when it should have been getting good.

Oh, and Bucky's death was a joke. He died, and Cap gave the mandatory "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" scream, and then right after that...no one cared. if I didn't know Bucky becomes Winter Soldier, then it would have seemed like a totally pointless character death. Because literally, no one, not even Cap, seems to give a shit.

other than that, its very enjoyable.

here are my list of Avengers Lead In movies.

1. Iron Man
2. Incredible Hulk
3. Captain America
4. Thor
5. Iron Man 2

And i freakin' LOVED the climax. That end fight was greatly choreographed and the length was just right, contrary to Thor's (but he was fighting who he thought was his own brother).

MUCH better than Thor, Thor was just good, but Captain America was AMAZING!!!

I thought that if they took away the book ends... And you actually thought he was going to die, it would've been a phenominal movie. Granted it being right next to Avengers, you couldn't do that. But the emotional aspect of the end of the film would've been amazing.

man that sucks. its not even worth going to the 3D. thats why its such a scam. 3D doesn't make anything look any better.

it should be a crime to show movies in ONLY 3D. oh well, hopefull it will go away soon.

I think it beats out Iron Man, Cap is actually shown mourning the loss of Bucky right after the scene and then making the decision to take the fight right to the Red Skull. I hope Marvel decides to bring Bucky back for a Winter Soldier part either in the next Captain America or an Avengers.

@Intruder, Agreed, all Marvel Studios movies were great. Its like none of their movies suck. Idk if thats luck or just because they actually give a crap about how their characters are portrayed on screen. Either way its paying off!
Duhdaduh
Duhdaduh - 7/26/2011, 11:21 AM
@ corndog...i agree with you completely, the first 2/3 is the best parts. i thought the montage was appropriate but they should have fit in at least one more detailed mission in. buckys death wouldve been better if they built up more sympathy for his character

i was meh on red skull. he was cool i guess, but not that present. just kind of a background villain. the villain is where THOR really outshined all the other marvel films.

overall i liked it better than thor (just because thor felt too short and left me wanting more) and just as good as iron man and incredible hulk

3D is phenomenal in Transformers.

3D is NOT a gimmick, give it a chance and you'll enjoy it.

it wasnt mind blowing but to me the movie had more depth and heart than Thor and iron man 2, i dont read too many comics but i think chris evans pulled off a good steve rogers.
SPOILER i liked the end, it was just funny seeing captain america in times square

@CORNDOG-YEAH MOST OF THE CONVERTED TO 3D FILM FEELS LIKE A "GET A EXTRA BUCK FROM PEOPLE" DEALIO WHEN A FILM WAS NEVER REALLY QUITE MADE FOR IT, AVATAR YES..BUT STUDIO HEADS LOOK AT THE SUCCESS OF 3D AND HOW THEY CAN HIKE UP THE TICKET PRICE AND THINK"HECK LETS JUST MAKE EVERYTHING WITH 3D OPTION."

✰✰✰✰✰ AS FAR AS CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE GOES I LIKED THE EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT YOU GET IN IT, THIS GUY HAS HEART, SELFLESS, NEVER GIVES UP...THE GOOD SOUL THAT SHOULD HAVE THE POWER GETS IT...PLUS ITS AMERICANA ROOTING, THE FILM WORKED WELL AND HIS SUIT UPGRADED IN THE AVENGERS IS AWESOME..

It was a great film, Marvel better keep them coming, I loved it so much and how the setting was it was for the little guy and the ending was emotional. Marvel is kicking much ass, up next The Avengers. I can't wait to own Cap on DVD

Oh Captain, My Captain!

This should have been a way more stronger and emotional movie than it was. I enjoyed Cap for what it was, but I think it was just a decent movie.

@ duhdaduh

yeah, Red Skull did not feel like comics Red Skull. In the comics, he's one of the most evil villains ever created, bar none. The shit he has tried to do is just crazy.

but in the movie, he just seemed like your average run of the mill villain.

And i have to mention that for once, a woman was the best part of a cbm and it wasn't for her ass! Hayley Atwell ROCKED IT!!!

see, i loved Incredible Hulk, and i'm not a Hulk fan in the least. But they did a very good job with it. its my 2nd favorite marvel movie.
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 7/26/2011, 11:33 AM
I like to rate movies on how many times I can re watch it. That is why Iron Man is my favorite, but I've seen CAP 3 times already, and I'm dying for more. With time, CAP will definitely be up there at #1.

A couple things I loved about the movie was there was never a scene that dragged on. The pacing of the movie was perfect!

Also, there wasn't a single character I would say cut them out, they're not needed. I.E. Darcy in Thor, General Ross's right hand woman in TIH. Iron Man is the same way, although in IM2, Hammer's right hand man was not needed as well.

This movie feels like it's 30 minutes long. Which is a good thing, because it moves very quick. Thor seemed that way too, but it really was 30 minutes long. j/k. This also had the most action and highest body count of any Marvel movie.

And Chris Evans, thank [frick]ing god, is finally getting the respect he deserves. I knew this movie was going to be awesome when the moment they announced his casting. He did exactly what Downey did for Tony Stark. An amazing performance.
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 7/26/2011, 11:37 AM
I loved how they showed how smart Cap really is. He took one glance at that map and had it all memorized.
SpiderFan35
SpiderFan35 - 7/26/2011, 11:37 AM
I will elaborate when I have more time but I thought it was pretty frickin awesome.
One thing: did not like the Iron Man sound effect when the laser guns were fired, that was lazy. And they could have made the guns look a little less modern high tech for WW2 era.
Shaman
Shaman - 7/26/2011, 11:39 AM
CDB- You and me both! I [frick]ing hate Hulk as a character but i could still enjoy TIH very much. It was a very good film.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2011, 11:40 AM
@ spiderfan

there's a reason the hydra weapons sound like Tony's repulsors.

***SPOILER***

at the end you see Stark's father getting the Cosmic Cube, and the Cosmic Cube is what Hydra was using to power their weapons. Which leads one to believe that Tony Stark used the same tech to create his armor and weapons. see that, not so lazy now, eh? :)
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 7/26/2011, 11:40 AM
For the record, I loved THOR, but Iron Man and Cap take the top cake. I've seen THOR multiple times and the second and third act are lacking action.

**** spoilers ****

I'm surprised nobody is asking where the [frick] did Red Skull go?

nuck82 - 7/26/2011, 11:41 AM
had fun watching the movie, but i think thor was better, but not by much. but the last 10min of the movie was great, and the avenger teaser trailer gave me a boner
Maculis
Maculis - 7/26/2011, 11:41 AM
I thought it was excellent, but not the best ever. I know we live in a "what have you done for me lately" world but no CBM I've ever seen has topped spiderman 2 for me. Also, no CBM has ever topped the fight scenes from SPM2.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/26/2011, 11:41 AM

yeah, i can't understand how people can say IH wasn't that great. It had the best action, the fights were not anticlimactic, and it told a good story. what more could you want, you know?
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 7/26/2011, 11:41 AM
CDB - You could say Tony's tech sounds like Hydra's ;)
ksommer
ksommer - 7/26/2011, 11:42 AM
@Capcyclopsftw I think it's because everyone assumes he went to another realm. It isn't that hard to imagine since they set it up in Thor.
capcyclopsftw
capcyclopsftw - 7/26/2011, 11:43 AM
I think one reason why Hulk has trouble is people have a hard time connecting to CGI characters. I could be wrong, just my opinion. But that doesn't mean I don't like the movie, because I most certainly do.
