In a brief box office update, it seems THOR will just beat Captain America: The First Avenger in the battle of the box office, while the movie is on track of being ANOTHER financial success regardless...

Deadline report that following it's $4 Million midnight opening, Friday's $25.7M and Saturday's $22M, Captain America: The First Avenger is well on its way to bringing in $60+M (as was predicted by Paramount) but the site also reveal that it's now looking more likely to be around the $65.5M mark, just a little bit under THOR's $65.7M.

Interestingly, they also point out: The movie earned an 'A-' CinemaScore. (Thor earned a B+). Exit polls showed 43% of the audience was under age 25 vs 57% over age 25 while 64% were male vs 36% female. (Thor was 62% male & 28% under 25.)

Does this matter? Well, no. The fact it was able to knock Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows from the #1 spot is a bonus, while these domestic figures are a good indication that we can expect to see a sequel. With the movie set to open internationally in most regions next Friday, only time will tell if Captain America will be the superhero box office king of 2011. Stay tuned for more as we have it.

UPDATE: It's (NEARLY) official. The exact figures still aren't in, and will not be known for definite until tomorrow, but The Hollwood Reporter have revealed that Captain America: The First Avenger has made $65.8 Million, beating THOR and far surpassing Green Lantern's $53.2 million debut.

Its good but not great.
following a similar trajectory of THOR..this movie will be ending with something around $160 million in USA(next week C&A and Smurfs).Foreign ,it won't be making as much as THOR as HP will still be doing great numbers even in its third week so somewhere around $160 million.

Total : $320 million
budget: $140+ $40 marketing
Profit: $140/2=$70..(50% goes to theaters)

$70 million profit=Semi-hit, very very far from a blockbuster status.
Still better than GL but not as great as IM.
I hoped atleast a $80 mill+ opening.

@Rango - Your profit estimated margins are way off. The ticket margin split in the first few weeks is 80-90% in favour of the studios. Cap.A will easily make around $120 million before the split goes to 60/40 already earning them a nearly $100 million profit domestically.

Internationally Cap.A has a staggered release with the brunt of that being next week then spread over the remainder of August. It'll easily make $200 million internationally before the split begins to dip in favour of the theatres earning about $170 million profit.

So the minimum the studio will get from this release in the first month is gonna be about $270 million.

@capreborn - thanks, but I still expected it to make about $70 million opening weekend. No offense to Josh's hard work but I'll wait for the official Sat and Sun estimates before I accept that $65 million figure.

I think cap will do well, but I doubt it'll beat Potter on home turf. Hell the Dark Knight couldn't beat Mamma Mia in the uk for crying out loud...

@itbegins. Typically outside scenes have a cooler color tempature except for at Sunset at Sundown. On a video camera you have to white balance every 10 to 15 minutes at sundown or sunset. Given a lot of the movie was out of doors that might been the "blue tint" you thought you were seeing. They probably did tint the snow and ice scenes a bit more but thats typical as blue registers as cold in peoples minds

@moonknight1979 - I expect Cap.A to do about $270 mill worldwide at this time of the year if (big IF) it's fortunate to sway people who've taken on-board the whole "Avengers series" movie ride. It's Americanism is a hindrance for a lot of international markets, the World War 2 setting is also not a great pull overseas but the action and the Avengers link are the strongest things in its favour. If they don't sway the international opinion then it could do as little as around $180 million but the good reviews so far has me thinking positive.

Yet to see it for myself though but even my 50 year old sister wants to see it and she aint gone to see any of the other Superhero films in the cinema this year so that's a good thing!

It will be interesting see how it does international. But obviously they had their marketing arms going on this movie to maximise that as much as possible up to and including the first Avenger secodary title.

@Sparrowsabre7 - I agree, not much beats Harry Potter in the UK, even though the UK is the most ComicBookMovie friendly territory outside the USA. CBM's usually make on average around $20-25 million in the UK, if they're a mega hit like Iron Man of Spider man then they can reach anywhere up to $50 million. But Harry Potter in the UK is a phenomenon, it's averages around $80-90 million easy, this one being the final probably top $100 million.

It's a tough one i think it will do well just to do ok oversea's. The Anti Americanism is running rife through Europe at the moment even in the UK and the last thing many want is a patriotic film. The lure of the Avengers is not going to be enough i feel as outside CB readers internationally nobody knows or even cares much for them!!.

@Rango- Just so you know, but movie theatres make $0.00 on the opening week from ticket sales. That is what the concession stand is for. Now as the weeks go on, they make an increasing percentage of the ticket sales.

I think Captain America was made with awesome sauce. I have seen it twice already.

I didn't read any Avengers comics growing up, but I LOVED the intricate shared universes of the Marvel comics I did read. It makes me absolutely giddy to see that Marvel is having success with this cinematic endeavor. Catching up with the comics and even the cartoon (with my kids also devouring it all with excitement), I am now an Avengers fan all the way!

I gave 100% earnings to the producers till the production budget is recovered.

Ceejay is predicting $270 million income so the profit is $270-$180=$90 million
I m predicting $75 mill profit.

For example LOTR3 made a billion dollar at a budget of $94 million but the profits were shockingly ~$350 million.

For a sequel it not only needs an 80% critics consensus but atleast $400 million as boxoffice recipts.

The "America" thing might be a great deterrent for the movie outside USA.Everybody hates USA for Vietnam,Nagasaki,IraQ,Afghanistan,Cuba and the Economic turmoil in Europe.
and in ASIA,no body knows who Captain America is!!!

@itbegins2005- Grimlock, I am sure you know there are exceptions to every rule. While I am not a film student, i can understand the point your making. You do not want to overload your audience with far out concepts. The vision you had for the movie would have been nice to see, but i do not think they could have hitched it to the Avengers next year. Now if they could have gotten away with a 3-4 hour movie, and drop Cap in the middle of WWII fighting the Nazis. Then have him find Hydra and the Red Skull. I personally would have watched a 3-4 hero movie, but that is just me. I know most people would not.

As far as the rest of the world, they can all just go to hell. If they want a comic hero with their countries name on it, well they can go ahead and write one. Captain China, beating up on US Soldiers cause we cause some other fictional war. I do not see it selling many copies. Oh wait, that is all they do is copy stuff illegally. So maybe I should say they would not sell many orginals. I know I would never watch Captain China, Captain Iran, or any of the like.
