THE MARVELS Hints That Carol Danvers And [SPOILER] Might Be More Than Just Close Friends

One scene in The Marvels hints that those rumors about Carol Danvers and a certain character being more than just close friends might just be true after all...

The Marvels doesn't arrive in theaters until tomorrow (later tonight in some time zones), so while this is far from a major reveal, if you'd rather go in knowing as little about the movie as possible, here's your spoiler warning!

You may recall back when Thor: Love and Thunder was filming, reports did the rounds that Taika Waititi's sequel would feature a subplot involving Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) searching for a queen to rule alongside in New Asgard. This was ultimately dropped from the movie, but one rumor claimed that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) would emerge as her significant other.

Thompson shows up as the Asgardian warrior for a brief cameo in The Marvels (this part isn't exactly a spoiler, since she's in the final trailer) to help relocate some Skrull refugees, and the scene she shares with Danvers certainly suggests that they are very close. It doesn't outright confirm that they are or were romantically involved, but there does seem to be a strong emotional connection there, and Valkyrie plants a kiss on Carol (the cheek, but still!) as she departs.

It's an interesting moment, not least because we were never given much of an indication that these two characters had even struck up a passing friendship, let alone such a close bond. Whether the scene is supposed to be setting something up for the pair in a future movie is unclear, but it certainly seems to have been included to get fans talking.

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

@RoberTiger - given the previous rumors and how the scene (which I'm assuming you haven't seen yet) play out, it isn't a stretch in the slightest.

@MarkCassidy - Does a parent kissing their child on the cheek mean the movie is hinting at incest to you? It's a kiss on the cheek. Not everything is propaganda/controversy bait unless you want to make it that for clicks... oh.

@MarkCassidy - also the copious amounts of fanart that inspired the rumour to start. Marvel is definitely gonna make them a couple or at least have valkyrie having a massive crush on her.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 11/9/2023, 3:16 PM
@RoberTiger - Is the kiss on the cheek literally all you got from the article?
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 4:38 PM
@MarkCassidy - I got these two lines:

"It doesn't outright confirm that they are or were romantically involved"

"we were never given much of an indication that these two characters had even struck up a passing friendship"

Also we've never been shown anything on screen that would indicate either character is gay. That's enough to confirm any "fans" making this assumption are just looking for controversy-bait to me.

@MarkCassidy - Which, to be fair, that's your job here. Clicks = cash, right? But that doesn't exclude you from being called out when you're obviously reaching for something that only exists in head canon.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 11/9/2023, 4:48 PM
@RoberTiger - And both of those lines are surrounded by more context. And Valkyrie is gay as Christmas mate. You really just don't seem very observant... maybe that's the issue?
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 4:56 PM
@MarkCassidy - She probably is. But has that been confirmed on screen? Or is that head canon?
SuperZeroCustmz
SuperZeroCustmz - 11/9/2023, 10:28 PM
@RoberTiger - looks like you have missed a WHOLE lot about Valkyrie but thats ok cuz you got it figured all out just like everyone that has not watched it yet. Now Danvers has not been hinted at but again you missed some stuff about her stupid variant in the 1st place.
also dont forget the fact that this film is centered around and the planet of all women .. hmmm I wonder who they mate w/ if they can or fall in love w/? Can you tell me ? oh wait you responded w/ SHE probably is. Also NO ONE is saying its confirmed. It's been suggested and eluded too in anywhere its been brought up in So NO it can't be true that she is Bi or gay . Fast fact Who cares being does it make a difference to anyone besiddes the fact checkers
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/10/2023, 9:32 AM
@SuperZeroCustmz - I said she probably is, replying to a comment about Valkyrie, not Captain Marvel. And I only say that because I've read the stories about conversations between Tessa and Taika about making her bi. But that's never been shown in the movies or shows, so we can't say if she is or not. It's just head canon.

I'm not stopping you from having your fantasy. Just pointing out that it's a reach.

@RoberTiger - you got that but missed the sarcasm all over the comment referring to others that write more so thoughts than facts . You werent that writer but commented to them so figured you would get it . No big deal . We all don\t know each other so it happens

I kind of love it. Any more than a peck on the cheek could have gotten this movie banned in some countries. Hinting at it is fine
Theyre hopefully planting the seeds now and warming up the audience for when Iceman is introduced. They shouldn't hide from Bobby being gay. Just as they didn't hide that Tony Stark was a womanizer

Yo I want xmen to be divisive as [frick]!

ProfessorWhy - 11/9/2023, 1:21 PM
@Vigor - yeah, the x-men should be divisive, that's the point. Mutants are minority outcasts imbued with power to fight back. I can't wait to see how far they take it in the MCU

Vigor - 11/10/2023, 8:32 AM
@Ryguy88 - of course I hope it's good. But many things are just good. I like things to be good AND make a statement.

I also really get tickled by the anti woke crowd getting their panties in a bunch. That shit makes my day. No really it's the cream in my coffee
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 11/10/2023, 8:39 AM
@Vigor - again that's weird. You sound like a very spiteful person.
Vigor
Vigor - 11/10/2023, 8:49 AM
@Ryguy88 - I promise you I'm not. I believe the anti woke crowd are going to be written unfavorably in the future history books

I don't think they are bad or evil people. I just think they're uneducated. Not worldly. Didn't have enlightened parents to teach them love and that diversity is good. They're ignorant. And they're very stubborn and vocal in their ignorance. So when something comes up that's diverse and beautiful, and they rear their ugly face... I take delight in that

Idk is that spiteful? Maybe. I'm just not sure if spite is the right term. It's a weird internal feeling of me knowing my way of thinking is more advanced or utilitarian than theirs and me feeling grateful to be me, and happy that I'm not them.

Schadenfreude maybe? I really don't know
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 11/10/2023, 9:13 AM
@Vigor - I think that you're lost in your own little echo chambers and are afraid of debate. I'm guessing you're less than 25 yeare old and have little to no life experience.

I see people who need their movie characters and plots to share their world views as self centered and maybe even narcissistic.

The 'anti-woke' crowd are not looking for their opinions to be validated in their entertainment. Its weird that the woke NEED this.
Vigor
Vigor - 11/10/2023, 10:31 AM
@Ryguy88 - I was born in 86
I'm a minority and have experienced racism first hand. So DEI is embedded in my dna. It's my morals. I always stand up for under represented groups. I'm heterosexual but I get really passionate at when people are hateful to gay people. So no its not a lack of life experience. I'm in my late 30s. I very much know who I am and what i stand for. If you don't stand up for anything you fall for everything

"The 'anti-woke' crowd are not looking for their opinions to be validated in their entertainment. Its weird that the woke NEED this."

They don't want to see it in their entertainment because they don't like it. It's the same reason Muslim countries don't like to see anything gay in their media. Conservative anti woke crowd aren't so different from that
For the people who do care about diversity, it's super important to see the ideal state world in the media. Because if the only thing you see in media are white faces or only heterosexual relationships, then the minorities and the lgbtq crowd continues to be treated as "others" when in actuality we are ALL human beings and should be represented as such
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 11/10/2023, 8:28 PM
@Vigor - "the only thing you see in media are white faces or only heterosexual relationships,"

You are delusional if you think this is true.

You sound like a first year social studies student.

@Kurban - valkyrie is cool. And I just need some more personality from Carol. I'll find out tomorrow if they improved in that area

The only character I outright can't stand is Gaia. I want sentry to go kill her off
A waste of a good actress
