When Captain Marvel was released in 2019, it went on to gross a mighty $1 billion at the worldwide box office. We've been waiting a long time for the sequel, and more merchandise for The Marvels has now found its way online, this time highlighting Brie Larson's Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan.

We're starting to get familiar with both costumes, especially as Carol's was first revealed in Ms. Marvel's post-credits scene. That saw the Avenger mysteriously appear on Earth after switching places with the teenager, something we're guessing was caused by those bangles.

They're likely Kree in origin, giving Kamala an unexpected link to her idol (whose powers have ties to that alien race and the Kree Supreme Intelligence). Many fans believe Ms. Marvel could be utilising her newfound abilities through the Nega-Bands, alien artefacts that gave the original Captain Marvel his powers in the comics.

Whether those are connected to Kang the Conqueror - along with The Mandarin's Ten Rings - is another matter altogether.

As for Ms. Marvel's costume, that's definitely undergone some changes since we last saw it, though it still pays homage to the suit her mother created for her. We probably should have expected Kamala to get an upgrade after heading into outer space, though whether this is the hero's permanent new look obviously remains to be seen.

We're guessing the first trailer for The Marvels will be attached to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania next year, though it's definitely interesting that merchandise like this is starting to find its way into stores. Conspicuous by her absence is Teyonah Parris' Spectrum, though we're sure that will change.

The Marvels is set to be released in theaters on July 28, 2023.

I see why they want to keep Monica's full costume under wraps, but from what little we saw of it, it looks to be a very faithful adaptation. Imo, the best out of the 3.

Brie Larson is a very talented actress, the character hasn’t been great for me but it can be. Plus Carol Danvers has been a classic character from Marvel for years. I hope the movie is good.

That doesn't look like Iman.

I love Carol's new costume. She looks damn fantastic.

I never connected Carol and Kamala swapping places with the nega bands. But yeah Rick and Mar-Vell used to have to do that back in the day. Though one of them went to a weird limbo which i'm sure won't be happening here. I would love to get a Rick Jones appearance one day.

Carol's new suit is great. Ms Marvel's...eh. I get they want a new look for merchandising, but we've barely spent any time with her original look, which I liked better.

If we take the box office drop of Black Panther to Wakanda Forever into consideration, this movie will probably earn about $700 million if it has a similar drop in box office earnings.

@mountainman - It's below $2 million a day domestic. It's currently at $682 million worldwide.

I still hold firm on my prediction from a few weeks ago $800 - $850 million

mountainman - 12/2/2022, 11:38 AM
@TyrantBossMedia - And that is against 1.3 billion for the first.

With the first Captain Marvel making 1.1 billion, $700 million for CM2 seems like a good estimate.

@mountainman - Oh, I misread your post on how much The Marvels would earn. I thought you were predicting BP2 for some reason.

If you go on pure mathematics maybe $770 million, but being that CM was a very bad movie, it didn't have legs after its initial release, and Captain Marvel had really nothing to do in Endgame, then add that Kamala Khan was not a very successful series, plus the fact that The Marvels does not have the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers (Infinity War) as its lead-in to drive it's box office.

I think $700 million seems like a safe estimate.

Thor Love and Thunder made $761 million
Doctor Strange 2 made $955 million

I think this will fall around that $750 million mark, but until I see footage and first reactions I am only surmising.

@TyrantBossMedia - Yes there are a number of things counting against this one.

- Captain Marvel is not a very popular character (unlike Black Panther)
- There isn't the cultural phenomenon aspect of BP. I never really saw this character resonate with girls as much as I think Marvel had hoped
- The universe tie ins of Ms Marvel and Spectrum aren't a big draw. Skrulls likely won't be either unless Secret Invasion is a huge hit.
- It's timeslot. Not only is that late July slot usually not a big draw, but it will have been the 6th comic movie released that year (7th if you count Transformers). And I'd argue that it has the least draw of all of them besides Shazam 2. MI7 and Oppenheimer come out the 2 previous weeks. Movies for girls that will have come out not long beforehand - The Little Mermaid and Barbie.
- This won't get the Avengers bump that the first one did. People expected that one to be very tied into the Infinity War/Endgame story, which it wasn't. This one, from the leaked plot, sounds a lot more isolated.

Maybe it'll surprise and do well. I don't think so though. I bet its the 2nd lowest earner of all CBMs next year - only beating Shazam 2.

Side note - There are 9 scheduled Marvel and DC films next year (if Aquaman 2 doesn't get pushed out and Blue Beetle keeps its release). Over-saturation of this market is really ramping up.

@mountainman - I was wrong. 10 Marvel/DC properties counting Kraven the Hunter. That one was easy to forget.

I doubt Captain Marvel 2 will earn more than Thor 4 honestly, we're talking about a sequel nobody asked for with characters they don't particularly care about and a story that is apparently unconnected. There's no real reason to watch it and that's before you factor in the high levels of competition.

Let's take a look at that competition:
Spider-verse 2, Transformers RotB, Elemental, The Flash, Indiana Jones 5, Mission Impossible 7, Oppenheimer and Barbie will all presumably still be playing in cinemas when Captain Marvel 2 drops and shortly after we have the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gran Turismo and Blue Beetle. That is if, of course, Warner Bros don't sense blood in the water and switch the release of Blue Beetle with Aquaman 2.

I definitely don't expect anything more than $750m from Captain Marvel 2.

@Scarilian - Agree that $750 is the ceiling for this one. I hadn't noticed that Barbie came out so close to it.

They really should have made this a bigger cosmic storyline. Do a big Kree-Skrull War movie, a Michael Korvac storyline, or throw in some bigger Marvel cosmic characters like Nova or Silver Surfer. Ms Marvel and Spectrum aren't enough of a draw.

Why does Kamala look like Shahrukh Khan with a wig 😂😂

Did Kamala get recasted? That looks like a totally different person on the package design.

@slickrickdesigns - No, It's still the same actress. The drawing just makes her look different.

@slickrickdesigns - They frequently use the ‘final’ concept art as promo art or as the basis for promo art so in some cases the likeness doesn’t always translate the best. It could also just be the angles and proportions making her look different.

I prefer the cleaned up Captain Marvel outfit. The solid colored body suit looks much better compared to the oddly geometric uniform from the first movie.

I love Captain Marvel´s new suit, but I hope that after this movie, Kamala returns to her original suit, or at least a very similar costume.

As I recall, Mar-Vell’s powers did not come from the Nega Banda; it was how he and Rick Jones changed places. It seems like they were going for an original Captain Marvel parallel there with bands instead of saying Shazam.
