Anthony Mackie Offers More On the Falcon's Role in the CAPTAIN AMERICA Sequel

Updated | Reiterating how honored he is, Real Steel actor Anthony Mackie now says he knows a bit about the Captain America sequel's plot, and how the Falcon/Sam will fit, and much more!

In yet another interview with The Hurt Locker actor, Anthony Mackie expressed more excitement for his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Speaking with MTV News, Mackie reveals that he now knows more about the Marvel sequel's story, having chatted with duo directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Reiterating how he's honored to be playing Marvel's first African-America superhero, watch the video below!

UPDATE: In a separate interview with the New York blog Vulture, Mackie offered even more about the role.

"[Sam Wilson] is known for his physique. He's described as 6'3", 245 pounds, so starting Monday, for the next five months until we start shooting, I'm going back to high-school workouts and start doing two-a-days, so I get up to 230 pounds." Sounds major! "I'm going to try not to get a job between now and then, so I can really focus on this. Because Chris Evans is in such good shape! I'm just a dude he dragged into the lab that he injected with some shit, but I got to stand next to him. So we shall see! When I got the part, I called my brother, and I told him, 'Guess what I'm doing.' And I told him the movie and who I was playing, and he literally just gave me a litany of history about this character. He went in his closet, and he dug out a copy of the very first Captain America with the Falcon in it. So I said to him, 'Holy shit, you're an Über-nerd!'"
"I feel like every kid deserves a hero, you know?" he said. "And now that Spider-Man is Latino, I'm happy that little black kids are going to have the opportunity to say, 'Hey, I want to be the Falcon.' You know? So it's cool."

“It's amazing. The biggest part of it is, I think kids for so long have been looking for a role model or someone to look up to. I feel like this being truly the first African American superhero, being introduced in this movie and in this way, I feel like it's going to be great. The Russo brothers are great. They're very funny guys and they're great when it comes to storytelling. I'm interested in how it's going to turn out.”

“Marvel is really weird, because they don't let you look at the script. They're like, 'Listen, we brought back Robert Downey Jr., so you might want to be down with us,'" he laughed. "But there's going to be a lot of Anthony in a tight suit kicking ass. Everybody wanted me in spandex, and now you've got it — hours of it!”

Described as a political thriller, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where the highly anticipated film “Marvel’s The Avengers” (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) continues his affiliation with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. With an expected return from James 'Bucky' Barnes (Sebastian Stan), actor Anthony Mackie is also set to star. And Anthony & Joe Russo (“Community,” “You, Me and Dupree”) take over directorial duties from Joe Johnston, who helmed the first film. And “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” hits theaters on April 4, 2014.
