These days, it seems like Marvel Studios can do no wrong and with Black Panther recently named the first superhero movie to receive a "Best Picture" Oscar nomination, 2019 has already been a great year for Kevin Feige and company.

Now, it seems as if Captain Marvel is all but guaranteed to be a hit because long-range tracking is pointing to an opening weekend of $160 million. That's an impressive 14% growth over the previously discussed $140 million
debut it was eyeing in North America. If the movie does hit that target, it would have the seventh highest opening weekend in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's history.

At $160 million, Captain Marvel would also be the second highest opener of all-time for Marvel Studios in terms of its solo outings.

Black Panther is currently in first place with $202 million.

It's also thought that it could exceed the $440 million mark domestically during its entire run, putting it behind only Black Panther and the three Avengers movies. In other words, Feige's decision to make Carol Danvers the new face of the MCU looks like it's about to pay off in a big way!

@dragon316 - That's ridiculous. Not everyone has to the time–never mind the money–to see every movie that comes out, which is the point of reviews.

And I'm sure you don't, either.

These trackings are so unreliable.

Films can open bigger or lower. Solo a star wars story & JL tracked higher and opened lower. Then DP & SS tracked lower and opened higher. Not sure how "social media buzz" has anything to do with physical ticket sales? As bad buzz creates a lot of retweets and articles, yet is considered good because it's garnering attention?

FYI: I am highly anticipated for Captain Marvel, but just think these trackings can sometimes be misleading and create false expectations to the general audience if the movie does not deliver.

@dragon316 - True but that's more of a preference. A great majority still rely on reviews and trusted critics to budget out their time & expense. But I do agree that if people already made up their minds to go see a film they are going to see it regardless of any critic rating. Popular & highly anticipated genre films like horror and superhero are usually critic proof. Good critic ratings don’t guarantee a box office smash either. The Kid Who Would Be King (2019) has an 87% RT score is 1 of 2019’s biggest flops so far.

Slightly OT: I saw someone on Facebook seriously claim that Marvel releasing an action clip from Captain Marvel (the train scene) is a sign that Marvel thinks the movie will bomb.

I wish I was joking.
