Ava DuVernay is sticking with DC for her next project. The New Gods director is set to develop a small-screen adaptation of recent DC Comics series Naomi for The CW.

DuVernay will team with Arrow writer and co-exec producer Jill Blankenship to write and exec produce the project, which is based on the 2019 teen superhero tale of the same name from writers Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and artist Jamal Campbell.

The comic follows Naomi McDuffie, a teenage superhero from an alternate Earth with energy-based powers who discovers that she was sent to the Prime Universe to be preserved from Zumbado, the destructive conqueror of her home planet.

The show is expected to focus on "a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes."

DuVernay will exec-produce via Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television. Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes are also on board as producers.

No word on when production on Naomi is scheduled to begin, but we'll keep you updated. The show will join other recently announced projects Wonder Girl and Black Lightning spinoff, Painkiller, as fresh DC Comics-based content for the network.

So is New Gods still happening or what?

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Is Cyborg still happening? Or how about that Jared Leto solo-Joker movie? Do we have any word on Gotham City Sirens?

Probably another victim of DC/WBs "throw gum at a wall and see what sticks" routine.

@Blergh - I believe the Lego joker film and Gotham city sirens were just rumors.

@kazuma - Cyborg at least was officially announced for a release on April, 3rd 2020. (maybe coinciding with Fishers meltdown).

As for Leto: https://variety.com/2018/film/news/joker-jared-leto-standalone-movie-warner-bros-1202831025/

Why does Cw have to create milions of average tv shows?

I've been reading Naomi from Bendis and creating a tv show based on six issues, we'll see (although Wonder Girl doesn't even have a comic book lol).

I hope we get more HBO shows, because they have a higher quality level.

@DARKSIDEIS - Wonder Girl isn’t even going to be an ongoing character. LOL She’s Wonder Woman for a couple of months & then she’s gone for a nice long while, at least until a random WW writer brings her on as the 3rd Wonder Girl for a couple of issues, then forgotten again until she’s shuffled off to whatever teen team book they need to add a flying brick to.

@8thDoctor
I dunno about that, man.

Everyone is searching for their own "next Miles Morales", Naomi was basically created for that reason, Bendis constantly aims to reach that goal again.

But with this new WW...she has potential, i could actually see her sticking around, matter of fact i think they already announced something like that, maybe not an ongoing, but something like that.

@8thDoctor - I think she'll be pretty prominent with her having a show, like how Marvel starts selling books from characters who either get a movie or show. Venom now has an ongoing series cause of the movies, same with Guardians, and now Eternals.

@Doomsday8888 - AFAIK she only has her Future Slate book, which is only a couple of chapters long & that CW Wonder Girl series. Which is why I'm sure when they bring her to present time she will be Wonder Girl over Wonder Woman. But I haven't checked in a while, so you may be right that there's more.

@KnifeWasTooSlow - it's the nature of the beast and I hope she gets a stable home eventually, but she currently only exists as a 'sometime in the future' Wonder Woman in the comics, she is unproven and vying for page space with 3 other established Wonder characters (two of which are Wonder Girl's too) won't be easy for her given how most writers stick to what the grew up with or what they know.
I hope to Rassilon she gets a proper ongoing or at least a healthy 12-parter & she gets built upon. Her series could facilitate it, but things are rough over at DC after all the firings & culling of their line-up.

Interesting how this is a new comic-book series as well, never heard of the character but I'm instantly interested in the idea.

I really want New Gods to happen. I’d take it over every movie DC has in development right now outside of The Batman and The Suicide Squad

What, Ava likes to team-up with hacks or something? First Tom King, now Bendis?
Alright, maybe here she's just using his OC and...actually, why am i being unfair?
True believers know who did the ACTUAL heavy-lifting, David F. Walker and Jamal Campbell with his AMAZING art!

And sure, there's the usual shitty Bendis-speech, so you gotta give credit where credit is due, but honestly, Bendis just mostly put his shitty ass name, because they think that for some reason, it still sells...lel.

But when he actually wrote her in his gutter trash Young Justice run and his so-so Action Comics run she was...i mean, not saying it was not her, but the *magic* was most definitely not there.

But forget all that, it seems clear to me that CW is just trying to mine the DC IPs, they legit don't give a f*ck about stories.

Like, we BARELY know Naomi, man...
Forget about Naomi, we don't know SHIT about the New Wonder Woman, Yara Flor or whatever her name is, i have yet to read one single ass balloon outta her mouth ffs hahaha! :P

Then, of course, they even created their own OC ad hoc for Batwoman, and damn, that got me thinking, can they do that? I guess they can...
Can the MCU do that? Create a whole new hero? Villain? Hrm...

@Doomsday8888 - Tom King's a great writer, lmao. Heroes in Crisis doesn't undo how good Mr. Miracle was, and Strange Adventures is great so far too

Used to really love Tom King.
Actually enjoeyed his Superman.

@Doomsday8888 - Bendis is usually lucky that top-tier artists are crazy to work with him, so there’s usually good art to look forward too.

You’re being a bit harsh to Tom King here, he usually writes fantastic mini’s. The Visions & Mister Miracle are some of the best 12 issues books of the past decade. He sucked on Batman & Heroes in Crisis, but his output is otherwise really good AFAIK.

Heh! :P

But tbh, the reason why i loved his MM has very little (next to nothing) to do with Kirby's Fourth World and how King used it, alright maybe that's not entirely true but still...

I don't know how the f*ck King managed to write such a complex story with so many complex themes, sometimes i think i'm just projecting my thought unto it but...it can't be, i'm not someone who believes in coincidences.
I don't know if you're familiar with the concept of "maya" in the Hindu religion, the illusion of free will and such things, themes about the ultimate reality and the sort of cage we create around us or the prison where we spend our life.

Well, for Scott Free to get Scott Free from all of that was damn near impossible.

Because if the prisoner himself doesn't want to escape, then that's the BEST sort of trap!
Even for Mister Miracle, AKA the Super Escape Artist!

Couldn't praise King more for his work on MM. :')

Then he gives us this shit:

What an AWESOME usage of a 9 panel grid. :')

Couldn't agree more on Bendis, he must be a chill guy, artists of all kinds LOVE to work with him, *shrugs*

Dunno if i'm being a bit harsh with King, unlike Bendis he really seems to be a real piece of work, dude gotta pull his head out of his ass, i think he got hellova lot arrogant after winning some shitty ass Eisner Awards.

Dunno if you follow that kind of gossip, but the things he pulled with his Bat-editor or Jae Lee, not to mention the sort of UTTER DISRESPECT he's showing to Steve Ditko with his new Rorschach maxi is...UGH!
F*ck that guy!

So yeah, could be, but Batman and Heroes in Crisis were trash, i'm also not enjoying his Strange Adventures and Rorschach maxis...for now.

Bat/Cat looks to be another 'tarded take on those characters.

4thMaster - 12/5/2020, 3:24 PM
@Doomsday8888 - the Jae Lee thing was freaking rough & uncalled for, creating a huge commotion before talking to the guy. At least he admitted he screwed up & apologized personally via call & on Twitter.

I haven't read Rorschach or SA, was waiting on having enough free time to sit down with the books, so I can't really comment on their quality yet. But I can guess he attacks Ditko's Randian beliefs, mainly his objectivism; it's low-hanging fruit.

Bat/Cat is likely going to be shit, no questions there. The only interesting thing about it is getting Helena Wayne in Earth-1.

Interesting. I'll check it out, it's also the first time that I hear about the character of Naomi.

Don't mind if it won't be connected too much or at all with the Arrowverse (even if the description does says "she will journey to the heights of the multiverse" plus I used the same mind approach to Black Lightning before it joined the franchise) because just seeing that DuVernay is bringing this to the CW has a lot of my curiosity already.

Her costume is pretty good, reminds me to the amazonian armor Wonder Woman uses but it has a multiverse vibe to it.

Another 3 season and cancelled show coming to the CW. If you only get three season on CW you're an ultra fail show. DC has so many great characters to produce and they picks this boring person. Must be saving the good stuff for HBomax and dumping the B characters on CW. Flash should be cancelled soon so he can make the move to HBO Max.
