COMICS: How Does The Post-AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER Roster Stack Up Against Past Teams?

It seems Falcon will be leading Earth's Mightiest Heroes once again in the wake of the finale for the Avengers: No Surrender mini-event. But who survives to join him in a revamped roster...

Avengers: No Surrender kicked off Avengers #675, which hits digital retailers and comic book store shelves on January 10 but Marvel has already released a cover and solicitation for the final issue of the mini-event, Avengers #690, which (barring delays) should be released in April.  For this special 15-issue event, the Avengers flagship title will be released weekly.

Check out the solicitation for Avengers #675 and then see how that lines up with what Marvel is teasing for a post No-Surrender universe in #690 and what will presumably be the new team as revealed on the cover.

AVENGERS #690 - No Surrender - Finale
Written by Ewing, Zub, Waid
Art by Paco Medina
SYNOPSIS: THE AVENGERS WEEKLY EPIC CONCLUDES!  “NO SURRENDER” REACHES ITS FINALE!
The battle is over, and those left standing in the rubble have to find a way to move forward. As an era of the Avengers comes to a close, what will rise to take its place?

A team consisting of Beast, "a" Hulk (could be Banner or Weapon H), "a" Wasp (could be Janet or Nadia Pym), Rogue, Falcon, Voyager, and Sunspot is certainly nothing to sneeze at.  However, this lineup wouldn't necessarily be called the most powerful iteration of Marvel's flagship superhero team.  Fans should most likely expect some additions and subtractions as the story progresses beyond issue #690.

@Kevwebsz - I don't know, but it's good to see Beast looking like Beast and not some blue lion or like a blue wolfman like in the recent films.

Avengers teams have felt random to me ever since Bendis destroyed the concept of the book. When everyone is an Avenger, it doesn’t mean anything any more.

There was a time when I would have thought seeing Rogue as an Avenger would be awesome, but this doesn’t strike me as anything.

@Chewtoy - Exactly. Avengers is like a football team not everyone should be in it. The same goes with the Justice League. I always felt those to two teams were for the best of the best of heros.

@Chewtoy - As someone new to comics, what where the Avengers like before they were disassembled?
I would make three changes to the lineup.
1. Reveal Voyager is a time traveler from a dystopian future, who altered the Avengers memories so they would trust her.
2. Add Captain Marvel, they want make her a big character, put her on the big team.
3. Also add a new member that didn't insert herself in canon, I'm thinking the new Quasar, or one of the Young Avengers.

@SmashZapper85 - The movies are actually pretty decent at capturing the classic Avengers vibe. The mainstay Avengers were the big three (Cap, Thor, Iron Man) followed by the core 5 (Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Hank Pym, Wasp) and then significant stretches with some other regulars (Black Widow, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, Tigra, She-Hulk...) and then a handful of others who had one long, significant run on the team or were central to a major story arc (like Mantis) and probably a few I’m just forgetting.

So most teams were predominantly made with a mix of those listed above and maybe a rookie or bigger hero hanging around for a story arc or two before deciding that it didn’t quite fit. The Big Three tended to drift in and out of the book regularly, not showing up for stretches depending on what they were up to in their own titles. Most of the personal drama was kept to those without their own titles, hence that second group of 5 were the real core of the storytelling. They lived together in Tony’s family mansion (with elaborate technological improvements to the many sub-levels), kept by his (human) butler Jarvis and often argued with their government liaison over policy while butting heads with and/or romancing each other but saving the actual fighting for villains.

Back before Marvel started chasing movie deals around 2000 their universe was more segmented and less homogenous... it was exciting and interesting how the various segments (Avengers, X-men, Spidey, Street-level heroes, FF, mystical, etc...) would occasionally brush up against each other, allowing for it to feel like a bigger deal in the story.

The Beast on the Avengers or Carol Danvers with the X-men were interesting because they were coming from one team clearly to the other... how would they fit in with that already-established vibe? These days, the groupings seem more like completely new teams that meet in the middle.

In fact, here’s a fun chart I found online that helps to give an idea of how the core Avengers characters shook out over time. It has a few questionable points (they don’t seem to have realized that the current Captain Marvel had a history with the team as Ms. Marvel, for instance) but it’s interesting none-the-less:

@Chewtoy - I liked Hickman's approach. The main Avengers comic provided a chart at the beginning of every comic to show which characters of the great "Avengers Machine" would be featured in the issue.

Las member of Thor's team is POD. Hawkeye's team included Starbrand, Nightmask and Validator. The two big ones were Ex Nihilo and Abyss.

I think the avengers would benefit from being a more set in stone roster like the justice league. This revolving door concept is kinda detaching for me. We read teambooks for interactions. And none of the characters really do it for me. And often when it comes to revolving door teams, writers tend to assign personality roles to characters that may or may not fit the character

Hasn't been a good roster in a long time. Need the big three and some of the other regulars more often. I quit buying years ago because it stopped feeling like the Avengers.

That’s a pretty terrible team of Avengers. Always enjoy seeing a Hulk on the team though (although preferrably always The Hulk). That’s Sunspot? I thought it was (Living) Lightning. Would prefer to see a more classic team with less turnover.

4. Vision
5. Hawkeye
6. Ant-Man (Pym)
7. Gamora (Wildcard new member)
