Uh-oh. For those of you hoping that Marvel were just kidding around about it no longer being Peter Parker behind the mask after Amazing Spider-Man #700, you may want to avoid these lettered preview pages from The Superior Spider-Man #1!

Well, as you have now seen, these preview pages seemingly confirm that Peter Parker is no longer Spider-Man. The "Can't believe Parker put up with this" line gives it away, and this version of the the character certainly doesn't act or speak/think like Peter. He instead comes across far more similar to Doctor Octopus (who is currently inhabiting Peter's body). This could of course be yet ANOTHER red herring, but it could be argued that Marvel and Dan Slott are letting themselves in for a VERY nasty surprise if they think sales of The Superior Spider-Man will do anything other than drop without Peter Parker. Just look what happened when they retconned his marriage to Mary Jane Watson back in 2008... Many thanks to the guys over at Bleeding Cool for the scans.

Once Dan Slott said that Peter Parker was no longer Spider-Man...I thought to myself. "Well! I'm not picking up SSM next year" Sales will be terrible for SSM to the point it might get canceled.

I like the art and the costume.But the thought of Otto being there turns me off.Still,i'll pick it up to judge for myself.

Peter Parker IS Spider-Man. I could stand Marvel killing him off in th Ultimate Universe cause it's an alternate universe and has its own set of rules and all that, but in the mainstream, 616 one, they'd better not make up this kinda shitty ideas just to boost sales. Right now, I'm afraid, as far as plots and quality in general goes, DC's New 52 (well, maybe not the Superman titles, which are downright awful) is beating the crap outta Marvel.

It's not Ock, he says in the preview that "Hit more than I ever have in my life"

It seems they're trying to make him sound very intelligent. He's deducing the fight as it's happening. I just don't know who..

So it's definitely not Pete, now it seems it's finally truly confirmed (I don't trust what writers say before release).
And he still has spider-sense.
It sounds like Ock but I really just can't see him winning in the end of Amazing Spider-Man.

Intriguing...

I'll check it out for an arc or two but I have a feeling this is getting dropped.
Bucky can be Cap, Dick can be Batman, but Spider-Man is always Peter Parker.

if it was someone at least that would carry on the principles of spiderman then it would be more acceptable
Dick Grayson becoming batman, Bucky becoming cap and hell even Rhodey being iron man for a bit
if its Otto then its just simply a slap in the face to all spiderman fans
His greatest villain took over his body and steals everything and it actually works?
TASM 2 comes out in 2014 and its too long to accept this change
I mean even Miles Morales is more spidey then this guy
at least he understood that with great power comes great responsibility

It can't be Spidey 2099, Miguel doesn't have Spidey sense. So it's either a past Spidey or Doc Ock ora new character or a character that hasn't been Spidey.

Are the webs Gold colored or is it just the quality of the scans?

I doubt it's Kaine although i suppose they wouldn't announce Scarlet Spider's cancellation until after 700 if it was him.

I'm with Charlie2094.PETER IS SPIDERMAN THAT'S A FACT.But why not give this title a chance? The artwork is really good and you can't really judge a comic from 2 pages.I'll subscribe to it (since i don't live near a comic shop this is the only way of buying comics) and if i don't like it i'll drop it.Just like dick replaced bats someone else will replace peter.Sure dick was in an essence batman but we still don't know who the secret successor is.If it's miguel i'll be really happy to tell you the truth.In the end peter will be back till 2014 so don't get all pessimistic.

I'm gonna buy issue 1 just to see what happens and who it behind the mask, then, mostly likely, wipe my @$$ with it...unless I buy digital...cuz, you know, one bad comic isn't worth ruining my tablet with feces. ;-)

You guys are crazy, this looks awesome. Dan already establish that hes doing this on purpose, and lets get real, peter isnt gone forever we all know hes coming back, hes in the new alpha series. marvel gave the same treatment to cyclops. Yeah, you hate it now, saying "im not buying this, sales are going to be horrible", and yet when avx came out it was the #1 selling comic of its time, so some of you guys are hypocrites and really did buy it haha. So just shut up and stop bitching and moaning. Enjoy what dan has to offer, or gtfo and read something else.

I'm also thinking that if they leave Doc Ock as Spidey, we're looking at Peter Parker coming back to reclaim his mantle ala Knightfall when Bruce Wayne had to recover the mantle from Azriel after he went all bat-shit crazy(pun intended) and started killing people.
I wish comics writers could have an original idea...just one...sometime.

@Temple: I truly do hate that they made Cyclops into a super-villain. They could have chalked it up to him going crazy because of the Phoenix, but he stood behind his actions afterwards and it pisses me off. That said, you have a point, though, because I keep buying the X-comics revloving around that story arc.

all i'm saying is it better be Miguel! he's the only one who could be Spidey if not Pete. and it makes sense pulling him out of the timestream what with all the time traveling happening in Marvel Now. I refuse to read it if it's anyone else.

I actually want this to be Miguel O'Hara. And I swear, by the end of that series he was starting to develop some sort of Spider Sense. Of course it all depends on which Miguel we're talking about: the original Peter David one, or the one form 2009-2099 Time storm.

After issue 700, it seems likely that Spidey will suffer a huge drop in sales. Hopefully it will teach Marvel never to do something this stupid again.
