COMICS: WTF?! Marvel Cancels WINTER SOLDIER With June's Issue #19

Just as we're all getting excited for 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel has made the surprise decision to cancel the ongoing Winter Soldier comic book series, despite it beating the likes of Captain Marvel, Gambit and Red She-Hulk in sales.

Spinning out of the events of Captain America, Winter Soldier was written by Ed Brubaker before he handed over the reigns to Jason Latour a year later with issue #15. Despite the fact that it was not billed as the final issue in Marvel's June solicitations, Newsarama has now confirmed that it will not continue after that point. While it doesn't set the charts on fire, Winter Soldier does sell better than many other "Marvel NOW!" titles (although the publisher have recently cancelled one of those - Dark Avengers - too). One can only hope that Bucky doesn't end up in a title like Secret Avengers or Thunderbolts and that Marvel has plans for him in time for next year's movie.

I dropped it after Brubaker left. Marvel should have ended it there.

I knew this was coming they can't have an villain winter soldier in cap 2 and a good winter soldier in the comics. I bet they come up with something stupid to make him a villian in the comics again. I hate how marvel messes with their comics just so they match up with their movies!

The series has been garbage since Brubaker left in both art and story. It's sad Captain marvel is out sold by this piece of crap.. however with the horrendous art they keep shoving on CM, I can kind of understand it.

I gave up on Captain America when they re-launched the title with a lame plot and lame artist. Winter Soldier was the only title that interested me. Then Brubaker left and Marvel ruined Winter Soldier with lousy art and plot. So long Marvel! I've been a loyal fan since the beginning of the Silver Age. Still have a complete run of Cap. But I'm sick of the same old same old. Oh well, there's still the Marvel movies. At least THEY'VE been good...

Bucky is going to be in Secret Avengers, that was confirmed before the book ever came out.

I hope the character does something [frick]ed up like he's supposed to. In the Heroic Age Avengers the future Avengers say they hate Bucky. I'm upset about this but i'm sure we'll see more of him.

I think the character will live on. Some characters just can't sustain a title on there own like this. Winter Soldier just seems like a character best suited for a team book, if he is going to be a part of Secret Avengers then more power to MARVEL....in a related note, Captain Marvel has been a stellar title since its release. The artwork is great and I like when it changes up from arc to arc, it keeps things fresh and interesting.

I was psyched when WS #1 came out, and couldn't wait to see what Bru had in store for Bucky. But the series just didn't deliver on its promise. I stuck with it, but between so-so stories, and art that got worse as the series went on, it was making its way to my "consider dropping" list. So I'm not too surprised or saddened by its demise. Bru did a great thing bringing back Bucky, and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Mr. Barnes!
