Top 10 Heroes of the Decade

Marvel picks their 10 Heroes of the decade!

Every week, a secret cabal of Marvel staffers gathers to discuss the best of the best when it comes to the House of Ideas.

In a decade that has seen the Avengers Disassembled, Civil War break out, a Secret Invasion thwarted, and a Dark Reign fall and much more, the Marvel Universe's stalwart heroes have stood strong, doing whatever it takes to see that justice ultimately prevails.

This week, the Secret Cabal pays tribute to Marvel's greatest heroes from 2000 to 2009.

As always, these picks reflect the personal choices of the Secret Cabal, not the official opinion of Marvel or Marvel.com, and can be considered subjective at best. Enjoy!

10. DEADPOOL
First Appearance: NEW MUTANTS #98 (1990)
Decade Highlights: Helped to save New York City from an invasion of symbiotic-possessed Savage Land creatures; Provided Nick Fury with key information to help thwart the Skrull invasion; Defeated Bullseye and forced him to pay him in order to stay away from Norman Osborn
Why He Makes the List: Yeah, we're a bit confused as to how Wade Wilson weaseled his way onto this list too, but the fact is, the guy has spent the better part of the past 10 years trying to do the right thing and discover the hero within...when he's not bumping off targets for cash. Deadpool formed a friendship with Cable that inspired him to try harder at doing the right thing, though his attempts often went more than awry. Still, 'Pool did help stop the Skrull invasion and has been a constant thorn in Norman Osborn's side, so give him credit for that.
Spotlight Comic: CABLE & DEADPOOL #45-The Merc With a Mouth heads back in time for a team-up with Captain America!

9. LUKE CAGE
First Appearance: HERO FOR HIRE #1 (1972)
Decade Highlights: Joins the Avengers; Marries Jessica Jones shortly after gives birth to their daughter; Assumes unofficial leadership of the Avengers for a period following Civil War
Why He Makes the List: At the dawn of this decade, nobody thought too long about Luke Cage, the former Power Man who had distinguished himself as a self-proclaimed "Hero for Hire," doing good at a price. Luke's life changed when he met Jessica Jones, the damaged super-powered private investigator who won his heart, as both made each other better people. Cage's inner nobility showed through as he earned a place among Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers, even leading the team for a period, and the respect of all those around him.
Spotlight Comic: NEW AVENGERS ANNUAL #1-The marriage of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones!

8. WOLVERINE
First Appearance: INCREDIBLE HULK #180 (1974)
Decade Highlights: Joins the Avengers; Regains his full memories following the House of M event; Founds and leads the new covert X-Force strike team at Cyclops' behest
Why He Makes the List: Wolverine struggled through a pivotal and painful decade that saw the revelation of his true origins as well as the discovery of an unknown son who wanted to kill him, but through all the hardships, Logan carried on, maintaining more than a full-time schedule. Working alongside both the X-Men and Avengers as well as leading the new X-Force, Wolverine went wherever the action was and did his best to balance the scales of a long and bloody past. As always, what he did wasn't always nice, but the ol' Canucklehead still does it best.
Spotlight Comic: WOLVERINE: MANIFEST DESTINY #1-Logan returns to San Francisco's Chinatown to settle a decades-old debt!

7. NOVA
First Appearance: NOVA #1 (1976)
Decade Highlights: Defeats Annihilus, nearly single-handedly halting his Annihilation Wave; Fights off a Phalanx infection and manages to recruit Warlock in the battle against Ultron; Re-forms the Nova Corps
Why He Makes the List: As he put it when visiting Earth post-Civil War and confronting Iron Man, while most of our heroes were fighting amongst themselves, Nova was busy saving the universe. Prior to the events of Annihilation, Richard Rider was a young man still looking to find his place in the universe, but after surviving the destruction of the Nova Corps, leading a war against Annihilus and ultimately defeating the Negative Zone tyrant one-on-one, the Human Rocket found himself more powerful than ever, but with even more to prove.
Spotlight Comic: NOVA #1 (2007)-In the wake of the Annihilation War, Nova faces his new reality as the galaxy's number one lawman!

6. SPIDER-MAN
First Appearance: AMAZING FANTASY #15 (1962)
Decade Highlights: Fends off the threat of Morlun and temporarily gains new abilities; Joins the Avengers; Publicizes evidence helping to taint the image of long-time enemy Norman Osborn
Why He Makes the List: Spider-Man has never had it easy, and this decade proved no exception, as Peter Parker found himself caught in the center of a Civil War, sacrificed the memory of his marriage to save a loved one, and saw his most hated foe, Norman Osborn, rise to power. However, on the bright side, Spidey also joined the Avengers, learned more about his origin and powers than ever before, and walked his beloved Aunt May down the aisle. Moving forward, Spider-Man has already begun to plant the seeds he hopes will bring Osborn down, and through peaks and valleys alike will continue using his great power to answer his greater responsibility.
Spotlight Comic: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #500-Spidey must battle through an approximation of his greatest foes to help Doctor Strange save Earth!

5. MS. MARVEL
First Appearance: MARVEL SUPER-HEROES #13 (1967)
Decade Highlights: Emerges from the House of M reality with a new sense of dedication to being "the best of the best"; Named leader of the Mighty Avengers; Founds Operation: Lightning Storm, dedicated to stopping super villains before they become global threats
Why She Makes the List: It may have taken a side-trip to an alternate reality where she became Earth's greatest hero, but Carol Danvers chose to make herself all she could be this decade as Ms. Marvel, as an Avenger and as a hero. Not waiting for the good fight to come to her, Ms. Marvel proactively sought out threats and worked overtime proving she deserved to be counted among the Marvel Universe's most respected champions. Even mired in the murk of Norman Osborn's Dark Reign and ostensibly replaced by the villainous Moonstone, Carol struck back and refused to relinquish her hard-fought mantel without a fight.
Spotlight Comic: MIGHTY AVENGERS #1-Ms. Marvel leads her new Avengers team into their first mission!

4. CYCLOPS
First Appearance: UNCANNY X-MEN #1 (1963)
Decade Highlights: Following the death of Jean Grey, becomes co-headmaster of the Xavier Institute; Organizes the move of the X-Men to San Francisco; Outwits Norman Osborn and sets up the island of Utopia as a haven for mutants
Why He Makes the List: For years, Scott Summers served as the most devoted student and follower of Charles Xavier's dream, but this decade Cyclops became undoubtedly his own man and a dreamer in his own right. Gathering himself following the death of his wife, Jean Grey, Summers steeled himself with new love Emma Frost and steered through revelations that Professor X had kept harsh secrets from his X-Men by holding the team together and ultimately relocating them to San Francisco. Now the de factor spokesperson not only for the X-Men but the mutant race, Cyclops has secured the accepting home for his people even Xavier never could.
Spotlight Comic: UNCANNY X-MEN #498-Cyclops plunges into a psychedelic San Francisco in the hopes of saving the city and his X-Men teammates!

3. CAPTAIN AMERICA (Bucky Barnes)
First Appearance: CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #1 (1941)
Decade Highlights: With the help of Steve Rogers, shakes off his mental conditioning as the Winter Soldier; With Rogers presumed dead, becomes the new Captain America; Helps to fend off the Skrull invasion and joins the Avengers
Why He Makes the List: Arguably no greater legacy exists in the Marvel Universe than that of Captain America, a proud role embodied with perfection for years by Steve Rogers. However, when Rogers fell following Civil War, the shield needed to be picked up, and the onus fell on his one-time sidekick, Bucky Barnes. Only months removed from a decades-long hell as the mind-controlled Soviet assassin the Winter Soldier, Bucky nonetheless rose to the challenge and has done his best to make Steve proud. While his methods may not be the most traditional, Bucky Barnes has done the seeming impossible and shown that more than one man can lay claim to being Captain America.
Spotlight Comic: CAPTAIN AMERICA #35 (2008)-Bucky Barnes undertakes his first mission as the new Captain America!

2. CAPTAIN AMERICA (Steve Rogers)
First Appearance: CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #1 (1941)
Decade Highlights: Following the disbanding of the Avengers, rallies a new team; Restores the Winter Soldier's memories as Bucky; After being presumed dead, escapes being stranded in the timestream by the Red Skull
Why He Makes the List: Steve Rogers' ideals were tested perhaps like never before this decade, and ultimately he stood by them with his very life. Despite best friend Iron Man and many others standing up for Super Human Registration, Captain America refused to fall in line, feeling the act violated civil liberties, and organized an underground movement against his former allies. However, proving himself a true man of the people, Rogers gave up his end of the Civil War and surrendered despite still believing himself in the right when the common man spoke out in favor of Registration. Tragically, it seemed Rogers was struck down by an assassin's bullet following his capitulation, but he recently escaped what turned out to be a trap by archenemy the Red Skull and one of the Marvel Universe's greatest heroes has returned to action.
Spotlight Comic: CAPTAIN AMERICA #5 (2005)-Steve Rogers relives a decades-old mission with the Invaders in hopes of unlocking mysteries in the present!

1. IRON MAN
First Appearance: TALES OF SUSPENSE #39 (1963)
Decade Highlights: Appointed United States Secretary of Defense; "Wins" Civil War, institutes Super Hero Registration, establishes the 50 State Initiative and becomes Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.; Founds the Mighty Avengers
Why He Makes the List: The truest of heroes are the ones who sacrifice at all cost for the greater good, and that's what Tony Stark at least believed in his heart he did this decade. Despite his actions turning many of his longtime friends and colleagues against him, Iron Man chose to enforce the divisive Super Human Registration Act at the behest of public opinion and took on massive responsibilities as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. When Dark Reign fell upon the Marvel Universe and Norman Osborn tore S.H.I.E.L.D. apart, Tony chose to sacrifices his own amazing mind rather than give up the information on other heroes' civilian identities entrusted to him. Though he may end the day alone, deprived even of his own genius, Iron Man can rest knowing he did all he could to protect the innocent.
Spotlight Comic: IRON MAN #4 (2005)-Tony Stark unlocks the secrets of Extremis!

Pretty cool list. I think I would have to trade one of them out for Thor seeing as how he single handedly brought back Asgard and all its inhabitants.

no love for the hulk, so sad.

What a bunch of hooey! Where is Gambit? He has had a [frick]ed up and crazy decade and much of what went on during Messiah CompleX, Messiah War, Endangered Species, etc had a lot to do with him, and to me those were some of the best arcs released by Marvel in the past decade.

What about the Hulk? Charles Xavier? Cable? I can keep going, but bottom line is only half this list deserves the accolades.

At least Cyke is on the list, he [frick]in' deserves it too.

Off topic, I just got a 1st printing of Will Eisner's 'A Contract With God' today!

dell: Nova was out saving the galaxy while earths heroes were fighting amongst themselves.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/4/2010, 6:07 PM
dellamorte, I think Nova is one of the few who deserves a slot on this list. Nova, Cyclops, Luke Cage, Deadpool, and maybe Ms. Marvel. Wolverine has only been what he always is, nothing special, while Iron Man can argueably be blamed for the events of Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign itself. He deserves the 'biggest douche of the decade' award, not best hero. I mean, c'mon, he had finally [frick]ed up so bad by the end of Secret Invasion, Norman Osborn was allowed to succeed him! I totally agree with you regarding Emma Frost, except that I do like her as a character lol.
BryEL
BryEL - 1/4/2010, 6:53 PM
Emma Frost deserves to be on there instead of Nova or Iron Man. Honorable Mentions: Thor, Spider-Woman, Clint Barton (?)

Pym is starting to stand out too.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/4/2010, 7:44 PM
BryEl, Hawkeye, that's a good HM, I have never been a bigger fan of him than in the past few years. Same applies to Cable for me, so we should throw him in the hat for HM too at the least. I guess not many people have followed Nova in the past few years. He single-handedly defeated Annihilus, no small task at all. Without his actions during Annihilation, there wouldn't have been an Earth for the Skrulls to invade lol.
BryEL
BryEL - 1/4/2010, 8:28 PM
Well, I said Barton cause of his crossover as Ronin, but yeah, Hawkeye should not be ignored!

I agree with Myth and dell. Where is Emma Frost...? What happen? But Nova, Cage, Dead pool, Cyclops, Captain America. All them yes but Emma, Gambit, Shadow cat and the hulk where is the hulk he had his moments come on Marvel. Yes I'm an x-men fan so it may be a little bias.

Luke cage is LAME! Nova is LAME! This List is Lame!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/5/2010, 7:31 AM
I think the only real reason Cage and Nova are on this is so they won't be accused of favoring all of the biggest names for this list. But seriously, Nova? Im not a dies hard Marvel reader, but I do know that if they wanted to stick a few lesser names in then Iron Fist would have made more sense than Nova. They have mainly focused on characters revolving around the Dark Reign/Avengers stories. I guess its all down to personal opinion though, and what you have read! I can't comment on Ms Marvel.
samd577
samd577 - 1/5/2010, 7:58 AM
only focusing on Avengers related stories, when there are so many huge budget Avengers related movies coming out soon(ish).

Surely not...
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 1/5/2010, 8:37 AM
Ror: Nova had nothing to do with the Avengers. He was front and center throughout the entire Annihilatian story line which lasted quite a while.

If you haven't read any of that series, I suggest you do. It's excellent. Far superior IMO than the Civil War line which was happening at the same time.

Annihilatian was responsible for:
The return of:
Drax
Starlord
Adam Warlock

The death of:
The entire Nova Corps
Quasar
MoonDragon
AirWalker
Terrax
Annihilus
Thanos

The formation of:
The Gaurdians of the Galaxy

As TheMythe stated, if it wasn't for Nova the entire Marvel universe would have bought the farm.

TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/5/2010, 9:37 AM
Ror, did you not read Annihilation? That is the reason Nova is on this list. Check it out.

Mativ, Bro, I have to now question how much Marvel you read. I can understand even a die-hard Marvel fan overlooking Nova and what he's done lately, but stepping over Luke Cage? Sure, he wasn't the one who put the bullet through the Skrull queen's brain or anything like that, but his roles in every event in the past decade have been important, and he led the Avengers! That alone is something to be said when a former 2nd-stringer steps up and bears the former mantle of Captain America and Iron Man!

I think having Bucky Barnes on this list is weak, he didn't do much for most of the decade, really didn't add too much to new Avengers or Secret Invasion.
Makiveli21
Makiveli21 - 1/5/2010, 12:27 PM
Love the list but theres a couple problems with it-

Hulk- should definately be on this list, he had a crazy decade! Being exiled into space, fighting for his freedom in a gladiator style arena against and in front of a bunch of aliens, becoming king of Sa'kaar and taking his queen, only to have it all taken away, and the the biggest reason, World War Hulk! He came back to Earth and the whole world had to stop what they were doing and deal with Hulk.

Captain America (Bucky Barnes)- Its not that I don't like Bucky, but #3 overall? Thats a lil much. Everytime I saw him in Caps suit I always said to myself, "not the real Steve Rogers". If he's gonna be on this list I woulda put him towards the bottom.

Iron Man- #1? Wow. I know the movie was good and we're all drooling over the 2nd one coming out, but in the books he caused alot of the drama that took place in the last decade! He fought against Cap in the Civil War, he pissed off the Hulk when he shot him into space (we know what happens when you make Hulk angry and I've never seen him more angry than WWH), and it was his technology that let everybody down during the Skrull Invasion. Then he bitches up to Norman Osborne and lets him take over as the Iron Patriot.

Nova- "While most heroes were fighting amongst themselves, Nova was out saving the universe!" I thought that was cool. I agree with the Myth- without Nova there wouldnt even of been an Earth for the Skrulls to invade! And what did Iron Fist do? Got arrested during Civil War and then turned his back on the Avengers during Dark Reign because he's scared of Osborne and cares more about his own business. NOVA SAVED THE UNIVERSE! lol

Cyclops- Glad he made the list! I guess I kinda missed what went down between him and Professor X, but it looks like Cyke is the head honcho of mutants goin into the new decade. "Utopia" was a pretty cool storyline and I enjoyed the fights between the X-Men, Dark Avengers, and Dark X-Men.

Luke Cage, Wolverine, SpiderMan- I got no problems with these guys because they were all a big part of the New Avengers and the direction that the Marvel U is headed in the next decade. I'm not even gonna get into what happend with Spidey and "One More Day" or "Brand New Day" (because it always ends up in crazy arguements that make me look like an a-hole) but storylines like "New Ways To Die" and "American Son" were fantastic. And I loved how Wolverine got his memories back and the first thing he did was go to the White House. One of the Security guys goes up to the President and was like "Sir, we have a problem, Wolverine got his memories back." and the President was like "oh shit!" then Wolvie fought with Captain America on the White House lawn! Im really interested in the Romulus and Daken stuff going on too and cant wait to see how it plays out for Logan in the next decade!

lol at all you Nova doubters. Nova should be No.1 on that list...EASILY.

Why is Wolverine on there though? Him being there makes less sense than Deadpool being there.

This reeks of 'marketing'. The list is nothing more than the heroes that marvel want to push out, either in existing franchises or new ones. But that's just how it looks from the Anchormans chair!

TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/5/2010, 2:15 PM
These 'Pool fans who think he isn't a hero crack me up. He is a hero, like it or not, and even if he wasn't, it is what he really wants to be. That is the core struggle of the character, he is a good guy and a hero who lets his shadowed past deny himself redemption. If there is nothing I've taken from reading the 'Pool series, it's that he wants to be able to shed his old skin and become a true hero. Bad people don't worry about being good, that in itself makes Deadpool one of the good guys.

Makiveli, I have the same view of Stark. He dropped the ball too many times the past decade. "Biggest fall from Grace" award there.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 1/5/2010, 3:17 PM
It would appear there are people that didn't actually read the reason that the particular hero made the list. Perhaps just looked at the pictures and names and glanced through the description and explanation? Though I may not agree with every listed hero, I think the author does a good job of explaining why he picked them to make the list and I can understand his reasoning.
Makiveli21
Makiveli21 - 1/5/2010, 4:07 PM
Deadpool is right where he belongs as far as this list goes. It was a split second difference between Pool and Osborne taking the shot to the Skrull Queens head, and how different things would be if it were Wade Wilson who everyone was praising instead of stormin Norman! Also his recent stuff with Spider-Man and the X-Men says he's at least trying to be a hero. (his X-costume cracked me up)

I just wanna add that Hulk has alot more goin on since "World War Hulk" with the Red Hulk and his son Skaar. Cant wait to read "Fall Of Hulks".

And finally, everybody needs to stop hatin on Wolvie and Spidey. They are the big money makers for Marvel, and while yes the movies did suck, their roles in the comics are very important! If you guys think the Avengers reunion in "SIEGE" means that Captain America or Iron Man or Thor are gonna end the "Dark Reign" you got another thing comin! Nobody is taking out Norman Osborne except Spider-Man. Its his fight. And Wolverine has some pretty cool stuff goin on with Romulus and Daken, if you havent read it then you need to pick it up! Romulus is like Sabretooth (who I dunno if you know was beheaded by Wolvie recently. AWESOME) but Romulus is way bigger!

TheMyth
TheMyth - 1/7/2010, 12:22 AM
Makiveli, I agree it will (should) be Spidey to topple Osborn, but I'm worried they've been staging to give Stark the honor... let's hope not. I haven't stopped wondering about the authenticity of 'Sabertooth' since he was decapitated. Sinister cloned all the Marauders (Gambit himself is technically a clone) and Sabertooth was no exception. Most recently I can remember, in the new X-Force, Wolvie and his team fight dozens of defunct Marauders clones while tracking down a new Legacy Virus. So I think the prospect of the real Victor Creed coming out in the wash is present. I just think they wanted him out of the way for the current goings-on of Wolverine and his sordid family history ;) After that incident I pondered the real Creed has ceased hunting Logan at all and that the one's Logan so frequently encounters are clones, freshly carrying the memory of their original upon the moment the genetic material was acquired. Maybe even the steady release of new clones by Sinister was intentional, a way to doggedly pursue and wreak havoc upon the X-Mens most lethal member, playing upon the old grudge the real Creed let go long ago. To me, this would actually explain a lot. I have seen Logan finish Sabertooth many times, once he even chopped him up like hamburger and buried his remains among several spots on the X-Mansion lawn(not actually depicted, but this was Logan's claim upon debriefing, which is as good as seeing it). I wish I could reference the issue # without having to look it up, but I am pretty sure it was in Uncanny and during the time Gambit was temporarily blind and Juggernaut's friend Fish-boy was maimed by Black Tom. And now I'm rambling.

Nova is Marvel's Green Lantern but without the colored rings. But Ricahrd Rider can kick ass! In one issue I remember, he stuck his whole arm into some dudes throat and yanked his insides out yelling "For the Nova Corps!"
If there is going to be a Green Lantern movie, I would love to see a Nova Corps film as well.
