Stan Lee Explains The Difference Between Marvel & DC; Says Marvel Is "Scientific"

In the forthcoming PBS documentary series Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle, the legendary Marvel Icon Stan Lee discusses why his lack of science knowledge didn't stop him when creating Marvel Characters with Science-Based backgrounds, and how that is different from DC.

"I am the least scientific person you'll ever know." Stan 'The Man' Lee admits that he doesn't know very much about science, but that certainly didn't stop him when he created classic Marvel characters with science-based origins such as Spider-Man or The Hulk. Stan lee says he was trying to be "scientific with our characters." Stan Lee says that with Superman you wonder how he is flying. He says "When Superman flies, he has no visible means of locomotion. You might wonder 'how is he flying?'" Stan Lee then compares Thor's flight to Superman's flight. "He has that hammer, I had him swing it around as fast as a propeller. Then he lets go! Now, it's attached to his wrist. So when the hammer goes shooting off into space, it takes him with it. That's how he flies. Incontrovertible Scientific Fact! And that's the difference between us and the competition." You can watch the entire interview in the video embedded below!

Even though the scientific logic is total bs its still somewhat believable. At least in the world of fiction. I always loved that. But I still do wonder how a teenager invent his own artificial webs that is strong enough to support his body. Or how having lethal exposure to gamma radiation can turn you into a giant green monster. Or...aw, who cares. That's what makes it fun.

When he's talking about science, he's talking about how he wanted these heroes to have an explanation of how they do these things and how they came to be.

If you think about, almost all the mainstream popular Marvel heroes have some thing scientific or technological about them.

Thor
Fantastic Four
Cap'n America
Iron Man
Ant-Man
Wasp
Hulk
Spider-man
ETC ETC

If Thor's means of flying is a propelling hammer, wouldn't that mean his entire arm should be propelling as well? Or perhaps the hammer is propelling around his wrist like a bracelet... that'd be funny

Stan doesn't know wtf hes talking about. None of these characters are scientific Marvel or otherwise . Does he hear himself talk........this overrated hack just said.....A hammer propels him into space, thus he's more scientifically justifiable.

TheWolverine08
TheWolverine08 - 10/10/2013, 4:33 PM
The Marvel Universe tends to revolve around science fiction like radioactive spiders, mutants, super soldiers, etc. so Stan is somewhat right.

@Prime - Joking? About what? He is right, you know. Most Marvel characters have a scientific background. They have more Sci-Fi elements than Fantasy elements.

XD hahahahahahaha look at all the dc fans getting bent out of shape.

as MrCBM56 pointed out marvel characters are more science based,he mentioned most of them but you can add others like iron man, silver surfer, black panther & dr.doom to name just a few more.

the inhumans were created by scientific experiments conducted by the kree.
StatenMan18
StatenMan18 - 10/10/2013, 5:07 PM
I'm guessing the human torch is another obvious choice.. He has to be on fire in order to propel and direct his flight pattern
