Darwyn Cooke’s wife, Marsha, has revealed via his blog, that the award winning comic book artist is in the midst of a terrible battle with cancer.
It is with tremendous sadness that we announce Darwyn is now receiving palliative care following a bout with aggressive cancer. His brother Dennis and I, along with our families appreciate the outpouring of support we have received. We ask for privacy as we go through this very difficult time. Urgent inquiries please contact David Hyde [email protected]
Cooke is best known for work on
DC: The New Frontier and
The Spirit. He also worked as a storyboard artist for
Batman: The Animated Series and
Superman: The Animated Series as well as animating the opening sequence for
Batman Beyond.
Cooke was also the writer/artist of one of the
Watchmen prequel series -
Before Watchmen: Minutemen.
For those unfamiliar with the term, palliative care is a form of treatment without a curative intent, meaning it can relieve the symptoms of a terminal illness such as pain, physical stress, and mental stress but it's not intended to cure the patient. Palliative care is often prescribed to patients with late-stage cancer.
UPDATE: Cooke has passed away. His family has
released the following statement.
We regret to inform you that Darwyn lost his battle with cancer early this morning at 1:30 AM ET. We read all of your messages of support to him throughout the day yesterday. He was filled with your love and surrounded by friends and family at his home in Florida.
Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and Hero Initiative.
Please continue to respect our privacy as we go through this very difficult time.
A longer statement will come later today.
