Now, his colleague Erica Durance is all over the place. Kristin Kreuk just did her her movie. Allison Mack has done interviews lately. And Justin Hartley has been busy promoting Smallville. Even Michael Rosenbaum is doing interviews, but not Tom Welling.
It is believed that Tom Welling has been told to stay away from the media. Or perhaps, he chooses to, so that he doesn’t have to deny or accept if he will:
1. Be in the new Superman movie or Smallville movie.
2. Fly on Smallville.
3. Wear the suit.
Perhaps he is tired of being asked the same questions over and over.
After doing some research, some interesting things came to light.
He met with Brett Rattner for the role of Superman when Ratner was hired to direct the movie at that time. He didn’t do it (star in the movie) because the movie would mean the end of the show or doing both at the time was impossible. (Don't believe me? See the interview here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x522s6_tom-welling-on-last-call-with-carso_shortfilms )
OK, this does not sound like the Tom Welling that isn’t interested in being typecast, but it happened.
Geoff Johns writer of the new Flash movie, wrote an episode for Smallville last season. Smallville producers are saying the show is on its way to lining up with the comics/movies. (Although, at the same time they totally blamed the lack of progress on Tom’s lack of interest in wearing the suit.).It is obvious that Smallville is being taken more and more seriously. (Please read my article coming soon on why I don’t feel moving Smallville to Fridays is a bad thing. In fact, it may be what the show needed.)
Now, Warner Bros. is talking about a Superman REBOOT and at the same time Brandon Routh is saying in various interviews he is uncertain about his return to the next Superman movie. Could Tom Welling finally be interested in the role he was born to play?
There is a rumor going around Twitter that he might be showing up at the Comic-Con. This could mean he might be ready to answer “yes” to those three questions that he is tired of hearing.
There is a lot going on. Yet I keep reading Superman’s movie future is on idle. I believe these are very exciting times for Superman fans and big, big news is on its way.
For an idea of how I envision Tom as Superman see my manip here:

But now they are saying that the suit “is” going to be on the show, and that Tom is Co-producer of the show. Would this mean this is the last season? Also, Tom will be at ComicCon for the first time. My prediction is this is just the beginning of “Metropolis”.
and here is my interpretation of the rumored invitation.
