Cowboys & Aliens And The Smurfs Tied In Surprising Box Office Results!

The final figures won't be in until tomorrow morning, but in a surprising upset at the US box office, one of these movies has drastically underperformed while the other has over-performed! Find out the details here...

In what The Hollywood Reporter call, "one of the biggest box office upsets in recent memory", The Smurfs has tied with Cowboys & Aliens at $36.2 million a piece at the US box office. As the weekend began, Jon Favreau's latest movie was expected by Universal to open somewhere between $40 million to $45 million range, while The Smurfs were expected to debut at a disappointing $25 million to $30 million.

Some are already calling Cowboys & Aliens a flop, especially considering its high profile cast and $160 million budget, but its success now depends on how it does internationally over the next new weeks. The Smurfs meanwhile cost $50 million less, and the fact it has performed so much better bodes well for the animated flick.

And what of Captain America: The First Avenger? No news yet on how it's doing internationally, but the movie is expected to hold on to the #3 spot in the US with an admirable weekend total of $24.9 million (-62%) and estimated cume of $116.7 million. (as reported by Deadline) I've seen the movie twice in the UK now after it opened on the 29th, and the cinema was near empty both times. Hopefully this isn't the case around the rest of the country.

This isn't surprising. A lot of people remember the Smurfs from when they were kids and are bringing their kids to see it, or are going for nostalgia value. Cowboys and Aliens is just striking mainstream audiences as too weird of a mix. Never figured it would be a box office smash.

WittySupername: Yeah, there were about 20 people on Friday and 6 today...and that's in two major cinema chains. It's a little concerning because it's the school holidays here, but they released it one week after Cars 2 and on the same day as Zookeeper - two kiddie movies which I guess parents would rather take their children to. [frick]ing idiots. I really don't think it has anything to do with the title for the majority though (and if it does, they too are [frick]ing idiots) and would be shocked if it fails to reach #1 here.

Never underestimate kids movies. They always perform better than expected.

Kids are a large demographic and this is one that parents probably wanted to see with their kids because they remember the Smurfs from their younger days. It really doesn't surprise me at all. It's not like Cowboys and Aliens is a mainstream comic that people are familiar with. It has a decent cast, but that is about the only mainstream selling point, the rest is an unknown.

How did a piece of shit like the Smurfts, who put absolutly no effort into it to be good, appealing to the lowest common denimentor, and was critical ripped apart do better then Winnie the Pooh, a kids film that was a critical darling and was smart, funny and tried to be something kids and parents could enjoy.

I feel bad for Cowboys & Aliens, hopefully it can hold in the coming weeks. But if not, it's not that bad, I could diffently see Cowboys & Aliens becoming a huge hit on DVD and becoming a cult film (like Scott Pilgrim, Kick Ass, & Hellboy 2), and people will realize how fun it is. Maybe the title was just to much for some people, a title that sounded cool and created a lot of hype, but not enought to get people to see it(like Snakes on a Plane).

Also a lot of people stayed home this weekend clinging to their seats wondering what the government is going to do with their retirement money I work at a restaurant and this weekend has been the worst weekend since our economy went down the poop shoot.

I find it odd that the international numbers for Captain America haven't been released yet. The last I saw it had made $9 million foreign so far. I'm not sure how many countries that includes.
I will be very surprised if the movie does well outside of North America. The anti-American sentiment is as strong today as it has been for years. Maybe more so after ten years of perpetual war in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Libya. Add to that how nervous the world markets are right now about American debt and I wonder if the world has reached USA-fatigue?
Also, on this site and others, fans of the film have been saying how they have already seen the movie multiple times yet, it's numbers domestically really are only average. That makes me wonder just how many different people are actually going to see the film.
At any rate, about Cowboys and Aliens, I have been curious as to why people ever expected it to do well. Many of us remember hokey films like The Wild Wild West with Will Smith and we would rather not sit through something like that again. The Smurfs are just an example of how parents are always open to material suitable for small children. That they would choose the Smurfs over Winnie the Pooh is just a sign of how old fashioned classic animation is seen in todays cgi movie era.

Shouldn't be a suprise,Cowboys and Aliens failed to get young males to show up and the Smurfs is the first "little critter" genre kiddie film in about a month.It's the end of July,(dog days of summer) and parents were dragged there by their kids.Cowboys and Aliens was put in motion 14 years ago based off a concept drawing and fans said "meh"
True Grit was based off a great American novel and a prior Oscar winning film and was a hit.(Bridges should have got an Oscar for it,not Crazy Heart) As far as Captain America,well see, but it wouldn't be a surprise if it doesn't perform to the level of Thor which outperformed many CBM's overseas compared to domestic take.

@Josh - I took my kids to see CA last week, but this week we saw Smurfs. I'm not a [frick]ing idiot, just a giod parent. I didn't think th little ones could handle C&A, and they really wanted to see Smurfs - which they loved BTW. (I yawned through the whole thing. But it does a good job of playing to it's target demographic.) I plan to see Cowboys & Aliens later on my own time regardless, but honestly word of mouth hasn't been as string as for Cap last weekend.

@parafornia

Another reason the Smurfs did better then Winnie the Po was that Winnie came out
vs Harry Potter which even with it's dark,epic tone, parents took young children to
see.Add to that a the fact that the bulk of parents of young children today,
(early to mid 30's) would have been the prime audience for the Smurfs in the 80's,
along with a great ad campaign,adds to why they would see that over Winnie the Po that was popular back in the 70's.

Even I could've predicted that Smurfs would do well!
It has Katy Perry starring for one. And it's a kids film, 8/10 they do well.
Rango
Rango - 7/31/2011, 11:15 AM
well well didn't I see that coming already.

C&A was destined to be a bomb as I had said months ago.

and Poor Cap 62% drop..thats disastrous

US-$155 mill
foreign-$120 mill

total= $270 mill

only a profit of mere $40 million,well Cap is officially a box office failure.

PS:A movie with a budget of $140+$40 mill shud have made atleast $350 mill.
And Avengers budget better be $170,it gonna never make back $260 mill.People are fed up of Superhero flicks.
