DC Studios Bosses Are Mapping Out An 8-10 Year Plan For New DCU With "One Great Overarching Story"

James Gunn and Peter Safran have talked more about their plans for the new DCU, confirming that they're looking to tell one big overarching story over an eight to ten-year period. Read on for details...

The DCEU is dead, long live the DCU! The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and Aquaman producer Peter Safran are teaming up to take charge of DC Studios for Warner Bros. Discovery, and they, along with CEO David Zaslav, addressed company employees in a virtual town hall yesterday evening.

We know Zaslav wants to make the DC brand every bit as popular and successful as the MCU, and Safran reiterated recent comments from Gunn about their plans to tell one big story across a slate of projects.

"This was such a unique opportunity to tell one great overarching story," he said (via The Hollywood Reporter). "One beautiful big story across film, television gaming, live-action, and animation." Gunn added that they've started work on that before revealing how far into the future they're currently mapping out this shared world.

"The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be - that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that," the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker told those in attendance.

"We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight to 10-year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.”

While no new projects were mentioned, Safran shared his love of Aquaman and Shazam, while Gunn mentioned characters like Batman, Superman, The Metal Men, and Bat-mite.

It's clear now that a real plan is being put in place, something fans have wanted ever since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were shown to have various connective tissue way back in 2016. Since then, the DCU has been largely standalone in nature, with some cameos and crossovers, but no clear plan as to where these stories are going.

How excited are you for this new era of the DCU?

Tying in the animation division into the 'one story' seems to me a bit of a reach. Same with gaming actually. Unnecessarily large scope haha

@TheManWithoutFear - And yet Marvel have (what if series) and will (animated spiderman series) connected the mainstream MCU with animated media and praised but DC suggest it and it is a terrible idea. This site is so predictable with its dislike of DC and putting Marvel on such a high pedestal

@Vampyre75 - I don't think many people here would tell you that Joker, The Batman and Wonder Woman are bad movies.
Similarly, nobody here will tell you that Thor: Love and Thunder is a good movie.
In fact, if we look beyond Marvel Studios, there are plenty of bad Marvel movies, that are generally agreed upon, even on this site, to be terrible, such as the recent Sony products Morbius and Venom 2.
Kraven and Madame Web will be just as bad and will be received as such by everyone.

The only bias is preferring good cbms over bad ones.

@TheManWithoutFear - Why would that be hard? There are several animated Arrowverse entries that worked fine.

@Vampyre75 - dude Marvel has been at this (successfully) for how long now? The What If series came longggg after they executed their plan the right way. This is why DC fails because they try to do too much too fast. It’s really not difficult to see what Marvel has done, how they started and to just do that. DC is all over the place and may never get it right.

@ObserverIO - I would tell you that Joker is a bad movie but I would tell you that Wonder Woman is one of the best superhero movies ever. I would also say Thor: Love and Thunder is a good movie. Just not like Wonder Woman good.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 11/11/2022, 5:12 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - I would agree that Joker is overrated. It's also a little weird in that it seems to glorify murder. I'd bet a nickel to a bootstrap that Todd Phillips is devotee of serial killer worship. Weird ass movie to make.

But also, killer performance from Phoenix (if you'll excuse the pun) and an excellent score.
Certainly not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 11/11/2022, 5:16 AM
@Vampyre75 - Marvel did so after 12 years of building the world. Also Marvel didn't have an existing animated line of movies that have been going strong for a very long time.

Also video games take an age to develop. Tying that into a cinematic universe timeline is a tricky business.

I'm not saying that they are wrong, i'm saying that they are making their lives more difficult than they need to imo. Make some good movies in the same universe and start there. Start small. That way you appease the fans that don't really like the Marvel multiverse stuff and want a return to phase 1 style intro-movies. And you're not one step behind on the multiverse stuff by the time this all sees the light of day.

Calm down man.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 11/11/2022, 5:19 AM
@ObserverIO - It’s certainly a movie of extremes. Among top critics it has a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes so I’m definitely not alone in thinking it’s a bad movie but on the other hand it was nominated for best picture so at least a certain percentage of the Academy liked it a lot.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 11/11/2022, 5:23 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - It’s possible the animated movies would be to flesh out and expand upon lesser known superheroes that you are nervous to give live action movies to because even though they are lesser known they would be incredibly expensive to properly make a movie about. Like a Mister Miracle. Like a Captain Atom. Like a Lobo.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 11/11/2022, 5:33 AM
@TheUnworthyThor - It's possible yeah. Might be good but i'm still of the mind that they would be better to start small. Make some good, connected live-action movies with characters that the audience can get to know and like. Essentially if it was me i would be looking at MCU phase 1 and basically doing that.

I think in terms of people's appetites at the moment it's ripe for that kind of tight-knit story telling, focussing on character. Let's see how it all goes.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 11/11/2022, 5:55 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - I think they are going to start with live action movies and shows but if you are going to connect it with video games and animation you have to start that now, those things take a lot more time. Also I think they are counting on the fact that people already like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Shazam, and Superman.
ElvenKingSlayer
ElvenKingSlayer - 11/11/2022, 6:56 AM
@Vampyre75 - As of today the cartoons are only connected thru the multiverse. You don't need to see them to understand the "regular" mcu. It looks to be the same with Zombies and Freshman year. All this could change of course.

Tpo81 - 11/11/2022, 10:31 PM
@Frshcoupe - exactly they needed to just start off with one great movie then after shoehorn an extra scene here or there & a after credits stinger. Then after a couple movies come out that are successful then worry about more grandiose plans. It’s gotta happen organically. Can’t just start out with this gigantic 10 years worth of content

I wonder if anyone remembers Diane Nelson.

She was the head of DC Entertainment (the banner all things DC went under) years ago.

She believed it was important not to compete with Marvel but to make the DC brand as great as it could be. It wasn't about a shared universe, it didn't need to be that.

I believe it should be a year or two at a time...and the focus should be on being malleable enough to adjust with the changing market when possible.

This is gonna FAIL. Mark my words Gunn is not THAT guy. He aint Feige.

When will WB/DC learn that they should innovate not duplicate. It didn't work out for them before it ain't gonna wwork out again.

Well, they're not going to say "We have no idea what we are doing at all, we're not the right men for this job, what are we doing here, jesus[frick] help!" are they?

Still, since they came aboard the beautifully new and minted DC Studios and took her by the helm I have been way more hopeful about DC in general.

It helps that Marie Javins seems to have righted the comics ship, recently. I hope Gunn and Safran can also get the rest of DC's media in ship shape and Bristol fashion.

Seriously, chances of DC's failure went down to like 98% recently. 96% if those Jason Momoa Lobo rumors hold any salt!

Yeah I doubt he'll be able to bring gaming in this. Good games take more or less 5 years to develop, between the time they decide something, and the time it releases, much can change, and now you have to change your game last minute.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - I think he means movie tie-ins, which honestly if the big story is like leading to a Justice League movie in 4-5 years, then a great game taking that amount of time to being made would fit right in for that time frame.

I don't think we need a game to follow the next chapter of a story though as what I think people are interpreting.
OrgasmicPotatoe
OrgasmicPotatoe - 11/11/2022, 8:55 AM
@HWestRE420 - That could be more realistic, I suppose.

Movie tie-in video games died because they were cheap knockoffs because there was no time for their development, if they'd increase dev time this way, they might be onto something...
