James Gunn Defends His DCU Approach After Being Asked What Various Different Projects Are "Building Towards"

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has once again taken to social media to defend his approach to the DCU and the vastly different projects that have been released on the big and small screens up to this point.

DC Studio co-CEO James Gunn is often criticized for his approach to the DCU, with many seeming to feel that the various big and small screen projects that have been released up to this point - movies Superman, Supergirl, and Clayface, along with HBO Max shows Creature Commandos, Peacemaker Season 2, and Lanterns - are too far apart from a tonal standpoint and don't seem to be building towards anything.

The Superman director took to Threads to respond, arguing that individual stories should stand on their own rather than exist for the sole purpose of setting up some kind of massive crossover event. He compared the DCU to Star Wars, where multiple stories unfold across different mediums (without the tonal variety).

Gunn also confirmed that the "Superman Saga" will continue through Man of Tomorrow and beyond, bringing together characters introduced throughout the DCU.

"DCU is just an alternate universe; we can enter at any location or time and tell THAT story. I dislike the idea that individual stories aren't meaningful unless they lead to something else. People not understanding this is strange to me, because Star Wars has essentially been doing this for 50 years across movies, shows, games and books, admittedly without the tonal variety. Now, this doesn't mean there isn't connectivity."

"The Superman Saga starts with Superman and travels into Man of Tomorrow and onward, and contains many characters we've introduced in other stories. But that doesn't mean those other stories only exist to set up what's happening there. I would love people to be seeing Clayface because it's a great, fun horror movie unto itself, not because of where else Clayface will show up three movies from now."

While many agree with Gunn's take, others feel that he is losing sight of what a shared universe should be setting out to accomplish, and while individual projects should work as standalone stories, fans should also have something to invest in and look forward to down the line.

We're sure Gunn and Peter Safran do have plans to bring these stories and characters together that they simply haven't divulged yet, but a lot of fans are eager for just a few more crumbs here and there.

Gunn recently revealed that he is already working on his next directorial project while putting the finishing touches on Man of Tomorrow, and there's speculation that this might turn out to be a Justice League reboot (or at least, some kind of team-up/event movie).

It boggles my mind that ppl think this guy is better than Snyder at these films and world building. He literally should be doing Saturday morning cartoons. Or actually, he is. Just that they are live action and some absolute fools keep giving him millions of dollars to make absolute shite.

@Colton - 100% agree, this guy should've never been put in charge. DC is just bleeding money these days with stupid projects.

@Colton - I mean, he is a better writer and director, it's not even close. He is just making the wrong project choices.

@Colton - like them both but I like Snyder more some of solo movies flash and Wonder Woman sequel sucked that was out of his control did like costumes for characters he did snyder is more dark side of dc while James Gunn is more towards 70-80 comics version his take on Batman hard to say until we see Batman costume and in action unknown if gunn Batman will more 70 always saying chumb to robin or more dark kinda in 80-90 comics

@Colton - Right? I couldn’t wait to see Batman being rapes in prison or it least being referenced. His fathering a child with Lois also would have been epic. If he had a chance , he also could have shown us when and where Dick Grayson died. I agree with some complaints about Gunn but I want him over the DCU 💯 percent over Snyder.

It’s building towards Gunn getting fired and another eventual reboot. While I agree that each film should stand on its own, the low quality of each of those films is the problem

@Nonameforme - It means Superman, the flagship superhero and the OG, was a bloated mess with heavy handed and out of place political messaging, a weak and whiny Supes who lost it over nonsense and inspired nothing and no one, a supporting cast more entertaining to watch than their lead, an unusually dark and sexually charged twist to his origin that destroyed the hope messaging of his original parents reasoning for sending him here, an unclear threat, and a Lex who shits people point blank in the head but will be a co lead and presumably anti hero in the next, along with basic pacing and editing issues and a story that begins in the middle act.

I don't know if I care if it builds to anything or not, I just think they are stupid choices when you are trying to get your studio off the ground.

Peacemaker, Creature Commando's, Lanterns(Which really wasn't about Green Lanterns, good or not), and Clayface all before you get to smarter choices is very weird to me.

@Kadara - Oh damn, good call. I forgot about that one.

BUT, to be fair, we haven't seen it yet, so I don't know, maybe it'll do a good job introducing characters to the universe.

OmegaBlack13 - 10/25/2026, 12:40 PM
@Amaru - I mean, Lanterns was still the #1 show on HBO last week and Clayface has made back its budget in a single weekend. I think as far as studio setups, Supergirl was his only misstep so far. Now, you said studio, but if you actually meant that this isn’t how you want a shared universe to be introduced, that’s different.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 10/25/2026, 12:25 PM
Well I don’t disagree with the sentiment per se but if you were to take that approach I wish I would have loved the projects you did choose to make more. Also you can’t argue that a shared universe can give a rub to smaller projects. If there was an established Batman in this universe that people liked then I am very positive Clayface would be making more than 24 million dollars this weekend.

Comparing it to Star Wars (pre-Disney, with the Expanded Universe) doesn’t really help Gunn and Safran’s argument, considering how central the Skywalker Saga was to both eras and how many stories were connected in some way to the six (now nine) films across the three trilogies. Not to mention the Disney era of Star Wars…has been pretty mid overall lol. That being said, I don’t think there’s anything egregious about the DCU’s approach. It’s essentially doing what DC Comics itself does: an interconnected universe with standalone stories and crossover events. I do find it funny seeing people criticize the DCU for not being interconnected enough or building toward a big event when that was a criticism of the MCU for years too, with everything feeling like homework and every project needing to set up the next crossover. There’s obviously nuance in how you execute that approach, but you can’t really criticize DC for not doing enough of something people complained Marvel was doing too much of.

In a way, the DCU is attempting something similar to what Marvel tried with Phases 4 and 5: expanding the universe and building out its world without every project necessarily feeding directly into the next Avengers movie. The difference is that Marvel had spent over a decade training audiences to expect an overarching narrative, with almost every film contributing to the next major event. So the shift toward more scattered world-building felt like whiplash, especially when so many plot threads went absolutely nowhere, The Kang Dynasty was scrapped, and Marvel had to last minute course-correct toward Doomsday. DC has more room to establish its own formula, but less goodwill to fall back on given its mixed track record and the fact that this is its SECOND attempt at a cinematic universe. Even with Phases 4 and 5’s shortcomings, Marvel still has the Infinity Saga to draw on. I think people will be less cautious about the DCU once or if Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League are properly established, but until then, there’s still a question of whether it can build a sustainable foundation. Ultimately, the approach itself isn’t the problem; it’s whether Gunn and Safran (if they remain) can execute it well enough to earn that confidence.

I don't care if it builds to anything. I just want more consistency with the projects. I enjoyed stuff like Superman and Creature Commandos, but Peacemaker S2 was such a letdown compared to the first season.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought the problem people had was that aside from Lanterns and maybe Clayface, all the projects were all tonally exactly the same.
RolandD
RolandD - 10/25/2026, 12:48 PM
@Patient2670 - They did complain vehemently about that until, as you say, projects like Lanterns and Clayface came out. Then they had to shift their complaints.

@Patient2670 - realllly?
I thought that the problem people had was it wasn't the Snyderverse that people didn't even support when it was around but have become weirdly super attached to now for no reason.

TheVisionary25 - 10/25/2026, 1:04 PM
@Patient2670 - even then , I feel that complaint isn’t entirely true since while Creature Commandos and Peacemaker may be similar in tone , I wouldn’t say Superman is from Supergirl etc.

Why does he have to build to something? Why does he need to make mcu 2.0? Why aren't we letting each movie stand on its own?

There was an article earlier asking if Clayface will make a profit. Is that what this DC universe has fallen down to? Remember when DC movies meant something. Superman 78, Batman 89, The Dark Night trilogy. All these were huge major events for their time. Now it’s will it make a profit? I love DC characters and it is a shame what they have been reduced to. Spider-man Brand New Day has made more money than the DC universe will make with all its movies combined. Think about that.

@UltimaRex - No? Really? Spider-Man Brand new Day 2.5 billion. Superman, Supergirl and Clayface combined 774 million. At this pace it would take 10 movies from DC to equal 1 Spider-Man.

[frick]ing clueless one trick pony.

Mother[frick]er has been running on GOTG fumes since 2014.

GOTG was a big swing that connected inside a universe that was already NINE FILMS IN.

The DCEU was a cluster[frick] that never worked and the cocked up transition to the DCU has been a net minus. Full stop.

I agree tho. I don’t want more pg13 product slop like the MCU was. I hardly will ever go back to watch any of those movies and it’s because they were in retrospect very one note and shallow…always just leading to the next thing. Even Brand New Day had nothing new about it. More plot contrivances and a founding X-men member as the “villain” to set up “THE NEXT THING.”

It kind of gets old to some degree.
I like stories to be able to stand on their own two feet. Superman, Lanterns, and Clayface have done that. Whereas the film that felt most like the MCU (supergirl) didn’t.

@PS118 - This comment 💯 I agree well except I did not like Lanterns (Episode 2,5, and 7 were good but that's it).

But yeah I feel the same been sick if MCU for a long time and am open for movies like Clayface after loving it. We will see where this all goes and honestly I think it all depends on how well MoT performs.

@SupermanFamFan -

I really enjoyed lanterns. I just thought the finale was underbaked and left too many unanswered questions and unresolved character arcs. So that dropped it from 9/10 to 7/10 for me.
