Mister Miracle: DC Reveals First Look At Josh Hutcherson And Mackenzie Davis As Scott Free And Big Barda

Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis are bringing Mister Miracle and Big Barda to life in DC Studios' animated Mister Miracle TV series, and we now have a first look at them in the roles.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran recently confirmed that Tom King's animated Mister Miracle TV series (an adaptation of his and Mitch Gerads' comic of the same name) has cast Josh Hutcherson as Mister Miracle and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda. Now, we have a first look.

The likeness of both actors has clearly been infused into their animated counterparts. That makes sense given that DC Studios has said that those cast in DCU-set projects like this will reprise their roles in live-action when the opportunity arises.

Mister Miracle is expected to be a faithful adaptation of the comic book, which dealt with some pretty heavy themes and explored both Scott Free and Big Barda's relationship and the concept of the New Gods. Darkseid will also make his DCU debut in the show.

Whether we see Hutcherson and Davis beyond this series remains to be seen. However, characters like Rick Flag Sr. and Clayface have already made the transition from animation to live-action after debuting in Creature Commandos.

Safran recently told IGN, "I just think it's a book that I've always loved, and I remember Tom telling us early on that, every convention he goes to, at least a couple people come up to him and say this book saved my life, and I love that we got to tell that story over eight episodes."

"And it's just a beautiful story about, 'How do we survive in today's world knowing that we're never going to truly know the answers to the big questions in life?'" he continued. "It's a beautiful book, and the adaptation is fantastic, so we're excited about that."

The upcoming series follows Scott Free, known worldwide as Mister Miracle, the greatest escape artist who ever lived. With his wife, Big Barda, Scott seemed to have built the perfect life on Earth, until everything began to unravel.

As war erupts between the planets Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s adoptive father, Darkseid, has apparently obtained the Anti-Life Equation, a devastating force capable of dominating the universe.

With carnage escalating on both sides, Mister Miracle becomes the last hope to end the conflict and restore peace. But the power of the Anti-Life Equation might already be affecting Scott’s mind, distorting his reality and threatening the happiness he shares with Barda.

Mister Miracle is currently eyeing a 2028 release on HBO Max.

I wonder if this does well like lanterns, we’ll see these characters in live action in space with John and intersect new gods lore with lantern corp stuff which would expand the space side of the DCU.

Amazing casting and very good choice to adapt the book in animated form. Extremely interested in who they cast as Darkseid, Chris Judge maybe?

Looks great! The DCU has been absolutely nailing its casting so far.

I just hope they don't go with a weekly release schedule for this one. *Creature Commandos* really didn't need to be released weekly, and I almost dropped it because I kept forgetting about it or simply didn't care enough to come back every week.

Honestly, 30-minute episodes work much better as a binge release, or at least two episodes per week. There's just not enough content in each episode to justify waiting an entire week for the next one.

Sweet , dig the artstyle!!.

Josh Hutcherson & Mackenzie Davis would not have been my first picks for Scott Free as well as Big Barda but I can definitely see both pull off those characters…

Josh especially can play the anxious and reluctant hero nature of Mister Miracle well while Davis can bring Barda’s resilience , toughness yet love & protectiveness for Scott to life.

Hopefully we learn who is playing Orion & Darkseid amongst others sooner then later…

However , still looking forward to the show regardless!!.

@soberchimera - You can look at the artwork of both characters and see the actors likeness, especially Hutcherson’s. What is it your trying to argue against here?

@soberchimera - Well, that and my eyeballs, seeing as they both look exactly like an animated version of the actors in question.

@OldManHal @JoshWilding -
A. It’s only a single picture showing the side of their faces.
B. Likeness is not the same as physically being there which is what the title of the article implies. Hell, Primetime used Chris Hansen’s LIKENESS, this must be Chris Hansen right?

@soberchimera - "Uhhh, you do realize they’re just voicing them right?"
As Josh said, and as has been known for awhile, most of the actors providing animated voices are to also play those character in live action. Which is why these characters above look like the actors voicing them.

Uhhh, you do realize Gunn even said "What we're doing with the DCU is we're having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within the same universe. We're going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this, as well as in other things, some of which we've already cast."
"Our characters can move in and out of animation or jump into a game or onto the big screen, but will remain consistent throughout; same character, same history, same actor."

@soberchimera -

A. And that single picture is enough to see the resemblance. You don’t need a full character turnaround sheet to recognise that an animated character has been designed to look like the actor portraying them.

B. Nobody said Josh Hutcherson is physically standing inside the animation. The point is that Mister Miracle’s animated design resembles Hutcherson, which is precisely why people are discussing his likeness. You’re confusing the use of an actor’s likeness with the actor literally appearing on screen, then acting as though you’ve disproved something.

The Chris Hansen comparison doesn’t help your argument either. If anything, it reinforces the distinction everyone else already understands: a character can use someone’s likeness without that person physically being there. You’ve managed to make a comparison that supports the point you’re arguing against.

You’re not correcting anyone here. You’re taking the most literal possible interpretation of an article title, ignoring the obvious context of the discussion, and arguing against a point nobody made. If you have an actual argument about why Mister Miracle doesn’t resemble Hutcherson, make it. Otherwise, you’re just being pedantic for the sake of it and confusing that with having a point.

A. No it doesn’t.
B. Avengers Assemble and GotG cartoon uses Jeremy Renner’s, Chris Evans’, RDJ’s, Chris Pratt’s and several other MCU actors’ likenesses in the show, but you wouldn’t post ‘First Look at Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in Avengers Assemble’. Do you see the problem with not distinguishing between likeness and physical presence?

@soberchimera - "you wouldn’t post ‘First Look at Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in Avengers Assemble’. Do you see the problem with not distinguishing between likeness and physical presence?"

Those Marvel actors were not voicing those characters. Miracle and Barda have a likeness based on the actors who are voicing them in the cartoon and likely in live action eventually, so this is a first look at them. It really is not a stretch.

Ok, so NOW there’s a difference between an actor’s likeness and the actual actor appearing on screen. Seems like you’re subscribing to a double standard to me.

@TheFinestSmack - Here’s a first look at Mahersala Ali as Blade in the MCU according to you and Josh’s logic. It uses his likeness and he was going to play Blade in live action…..eventually despite it never happening.

@TheFinestSmack - My bad, Todd Williams voiced Blade in Marvel Zombies by the way, but it’s clearly Ali’s likeness and the plan was for Ali to play Blade in live action in the future. User Comment Image

But now you’re going to tell me this IS a picture of Josh Hutcherson and Mckenzie Davis simply because they’re voicing the characters? All Josh had to was say ‘first look at Mr. Miracle and Big Barda’ including the actors’ names makes it sound like we’re seeing them in live action, really not a stretch.

This is exactly what the DCU needs:

An eight episode dream sequence that deconstructs a mythology that's never been adapted lol

I do love this comic. If it’s successful they could do King’s “Strange Adventures”.

@Rififi - If "What If Mister Miracle Wanted to Kill Himself?" is as successful as "What If Hal Jordan Wanted to Kill Himself?" then I wouldn't be surprised at all if they adapt "What If Adam Strange Wanted to Kill Himself?" next.

Then eventually, we could see them adapt his current run of "What If Wonder Woman Wanted to Kill Herself?"
