AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors The Russo Brothers Reveal What's Happening With Live-Action HERCULES Remake

Avengers: Endgame director Joe and Anthony Russo are executive producing a Hercules remake for Disney, but what's the latest on the project? Here's a brief update on the movie directly from the filmmakers.

Disney's live-action adaptations of its animated classics haven't all been runaway hits. Some have exceeded expectations, whether it be from a storytelling or technological standpoint (The Lion KingPeter Pan & Wendy, and The Jungle Book, for example), while there have been a fair few let-downs (Pinocchio instantly springs to mind).

Despite that, excitement is his high for Hercules, especially with Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo overseeing the project as producers. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer, David Callaham, is writing the script and was thought to be hard at work on that before the WGA strike began last year.

Beyond some wild casting rumours - last we heard, Ariana Grande (Wicked) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) are in the running to play Hercules and Meg - it's been a while since any updates about the project have been shared.

However, in January, it was widely reported that Aladdin director Guy Ritchie had stepped down from the live-action remake, leaving it seemingly further than ever from becoming a reality.

That's evident from a new update from the Russo Brothers. In an extensive Total Film interview (via Toonado.com), they revealed that they're still "waiting on a script," meaning cameras are nowhere close to rolling on a movie they previously said pulls inspiration from the soon-to-be-banned TikTok.

"There are questions about how you translate it as a musical," Joe said in 2022. "Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical."

The animated Hercules was released by Disney in 1997 and earned positive reviews. It earned $252.7 million worldwide and followed the story of Hercules, a son of gods, who was snatched as a baby by Hades and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god.

As a teenager, the demi-god needed to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. From there, with his plucky satyr sidekick, Phil, along for the ride, Hercules learns how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures, falling in love with Meg and battling the evil Hades.

Time will tell whether the live-action Hercules becomes a reality or falls by the wayside like Bambi and other ill-fated Disney Animation adaptations.

Keep checking back here for updates as we have them.

Oh good. The writers of shang chi. Because we all know it had a completely solid and well though out script that didn't rely on ridiculous coincidences and characters making insane decisions for the plot to happen 🤣

@dracula - Still had some super memorable songs, art work, and voice acting.

@dracula - I guess it was the hype when I was kid in grade school. Didn’t realize how weak it was compared to other Disney animation at the time.

I would for James Woods to come back as Hades but isn't he involved with some controversy that might prevent that?

From the ones I have seen , the Disney live action remakes have been a mixed bag overall imo but this is the only one I have been looking forward to from the movies that have been announced so hope it happens…

I am glad they are taking their time with it though and if true that Ritchie has departed the project , I’m cool with it.

His Aladdin I felt was decent and one of the better remakes but I never felt he fit Hercules for me atleast so interested to see who they get aswell as the cast!!.

I got your Hades though already…

Such blatant cash grabs completely lacking in creativity. Of all of them, I only found Jungle Book and The Little Mermaid to even be watchable.

@valmic - fair point... Although if we're going to get pedantic, I think there is some low-budget art films that are passion projects. 🤔

@marvel72 - Because of my kids, I've watched more shit films than I care to remember. The Jungle Book was definitely the best, IMO. The Little Mermaid was watchable because of the lead actress and Melissa McCarthy, who was great as the sea witch.

So if there is no script there must have been a huge revision, or they went back to square one after the recent backlash so this is a good sign! I remember seeing this on opening day, getting the PS1 game, and foaming out the mouth over the animated series. Overall they're batting about .100 when it comes to these live action adaptations, but then there's the Russo's who I loved before Winter Soldier ala Community! Idk, please come back for Secret Wars in the mean time.

As one of the few that like The Lion King remake, please just don’t. We really don’t need it and I can’t see it adding anything to the movie which should be the only reason for a remake
Skestra
Skestra - 4/28/2024, 12:43 PM
@Ha1frican - The other reason Disney is so set on these live action remakes is so they can retain the copyrights. It's hard to question something winding up in the public domain the more you retain a specific property.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/28/2024, 1:07 PM
@Ha1frican -I get yah but to be fair, none of the live action remakes I have seen have added much if anything of worth to the story yet they still did well and some were even well received.

I think the only one that’s improved upon the original was Jungle Book.

Hope they wait until they have a good script and they bring Guy Ritchie back , I really liked Aladdin and I like him as a director in general.

Also no Ariana Grande please , maybe she would have been good for the role about 6 years ago , but now? She looks so much different and I find her generally unlikeable.

And as for Taron, I love him but I don’t really see him as Hercules. Not this version of him anyway.

Why can’t they just get a red headed hunky bimbo who can sing?

Austin Butler maybe but he’s probably too busy for that anyway

This will lead Disney to their next The Marvels level smash hit when cartoon-to-live-action Herc joins the MCU for adventures with his fat hair-lip sissy prancing Dad Zeus.

Had no idea they were planning to make this a musical, but I guess those Taron amd Ariana casting rumours make sense them.

Do look forward to how the Russos would make a musical though. I never expected Paul King to make such an entertaining musical as Wonka either after Mighty Boosh, but he did so anyway. Paddington should've been enough proof he could make a great family movie though.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/28/2024, 1:56 PM
@bkmeijer1 - the original was a musical too

Taron maybe could pull off Herc but I can’t see Ariana as Meg if true.

Still need to see Wonka , looks fun though!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/28/2024, 3:09 PM
@TheVisionary25 - yeah I know, but with the Russos at the helm I kinda expected it not to be one.

Wonka was very enjoyable, and for what seemed to be a lazy cashgrab origin it was great too. Surprisingly, the same can be said about Paddington. King did a stellar job with both
