BAMBI: It Sounds Like Disney's Live-Action Remake Will Tone Down The 1942 Movie's Most Harrowing Scene

Disney's live-action remakes continue to be somewhat hit-or-miss, but Bambi's former writer, Lindsey Beer, has generated debate among fans after suggesting the movie's most tragic moment is being changed.

It was way back in 2020 when we first learned of Disney's plans to move forward with a live-action remake of Bambi. At the time, it was said Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer had been tapped to pen the screenplay, though director Sarah Polley has since joined the project, working from a newer draft written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

Talking to Collider (via Toonado.com), Beer reflected on her time writing the movie and suggested Disney is exploring ways to make the traumatic death of Bambi's mother a little less harrowing for today's softer audiences.

"Not to spoil the plot, but there’s a treatment of the mom dying that I think some kids, some parents these days are more sensitive about than they were in the past," the writer says. "And I think that’s one of the reasons that they haven’t shown it to their children."

"I do think there is a way to update Bambi and our take on it was...[we] did give a little bit more of a scope to it. And I just think that to be able to bring it to life for kids these days in a way that maybe they relate to a little bit more would be of service to the original."

It's unclear how Beer hoped to achieve that, but she remains resolute in her belief that this story is one which deserves to be retold for present day moviegoers.

"What's interesting about Bambi to me is it absolutely is a classic and it's a beautiful love poem, such artistry to it," she adds. "I do think there's an entire generation of children who have never seen the original and that's very different from, say Little Mermaid or Aladdin or the '90s heyday films that they've definitely already seen. I can't tell you how many kids I've seen who've never seen Bambi, which is such a shame."

Modern Disney movies do feature death (Jon Favreau's The Lion King reboot didn't exactly hold back), so there has to be a way to make this one work without traumatising anyone. However, we'd guess Bambi probably won't find his mother dead in a pool of blood.

This iteration of Bambi is expected to be a musical featuring music from six-time Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves.

The original was released in 1942 by Walt Disney Productions and RKO Radio Pictures. The fifth Disney animated feature film was based on the 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods by Austrian author and hunter Felix Salten. The film was produced by Walt Disney and directed by David Hand and a team of sequence directors.

The main characters are Bambi, a white-tailed deer; his parents (the Great Prince of the forest and his unnamed mother); his friends Thumper (a pink-nosed rabbit); and Flower (a skunk); and his childhood friend and future mate, Faline.

The remake doesn't currently have a release date.

First if all, come on. The death of the mom made the rest of the movie as impactful as it was. It's just showing Hollywood wants to talk down to us.

Second, why live action? What does that add? Unless it's this, this will just be objectively worse than the original.

They're gonna give her cancer aren't they? So it's a slow build up and a gentle, expected death.

That's so stupid. Snowflakes.
I can already see the criticisms to Bambi's mum's death not going well at all.

Yup. That explains it.

Harrowing scene? What harrowing scene? The sound of a gunshot?

Hell, they showed Mufasa getting thrown off a cliff, and no-one bitched about that.

Time for some people to drink some concrete and harden the f**k up.

@ChimiFnChangas - exactly. When they remade that viola Davis was literally telling people to bring a hankie to see that movie. And that was 4 years ago.

In fact I don't even get why Bambi is getting the rap for this. We also had land before time where little foot's mom was viciously killed by a t Rex.

@Origame - you know what. I think I’ve figured it out.

“there’s a treatment of the mom dying that I think some kids, some parents these days are more sensitive about than they were in the past”

I reckon they’re pandering to either the anti-gun, or those militant vegan groups.

The reason the scene has always been memorable, effective, and devastating is because it was sad as f*** and it hurt. To tone it down defeats the purpose. The kids (and adults) watching are supposed to feel the pain in that moment of having their mother so brutally taken away.

They love taking out anything thats suppose to make you feel something and thats the whole point of good movies that they make you feel. Otherwise they’re just trying to exploit these old disney films for the cash

If Marvel can do a r rated Deadpool 3 pool go full throttle get Quintin Tarantino to write the script and direct.

The death of Bambi's mother is supposed to be traumatic stop babying people and let them see that the world isn't full of sunshine and rainbows. The death of Bambi's mother is meant to make you feel something as all good films should do and that's something that any good filmmaker worth their salt should still want to do and it's sadly something that modern day Disney will continue this is despite the fact that kids love being scared by the way.

Every generation has a bambi’s mom moment

Little foot’s mom

Mufasa

Nemo’s mom

Only reason this generation of kids doesnt is because people act like kids cant handle anything

Which is weird considering some of the stuff they allow in animated shows
