HERCULES: Disney's Live-Action Remake May Be Planning To Bring Danny DeVito Back As Phil

It's hard to imagine anyone other than Danny DeVito playing Phil in Disney's Hercules, but the good news is that Guy Ritchie's upcoming remake is rumoured to be bringing the Haunted Mansion star back...

We recently learned that Disney is eyeing Taron Egerton (Kingsman) and Ariana Grande (Wicked) to play Hercules and Meg in its upcoming Hercules remake.

Aladdin's Guy Ritchie will step behind the camera to direct, with Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo producing. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer David Callaham has been tapped to pen the screenplay, so the creative team is undeniably stellar.

While work on the script will have halted due to the WGA strike, another casting update has found its way online today.

We've previously heard that Danny DeVito is keen to reprise his role as Phil from the animated movie, a possibility which received a warm response from fans. According to scooper Daniel Richtman (via SFFGazette.com) is reporting that the Haunted Mansion star was in talks with Disney about a possible Hercules return right before the SAG-AFTRA members also went on strike.

The character would likely be brought to life with CG, and if he does come back, DeVito would follow in the footsteps of James Earl Jones, the legendary actor who returned to voice Mufasa in Jon Favreau's live-action remake of The Lion King after first playing him in animation.

Alas, we don't expect any official updates on this or any other Hercules casting rumour until the strikes are over.

The original Hercules movie followed the story of its title character, a son of gods, who was snatched as a baby by Hades and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god.

As a teenager, the demi-god needed to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. From there, with his plucky satyr sidekick, Phil, along for the ride, Hercules learned how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures, falling in love with Meg and battling the evil Hades.

Released in 1997, the movie earned positive reviews and ultimately grossed $252.7 million worldwide. Many non-Disney takes on Hercules have been played in theaters both before and since then, but the House of Mouse's latest interpretation of the classic story doesn't currently have a release date.

With any luck, some announcements will be made when Hollywood is back up and running.

If true then yes please , I can’t see anyone else play Phil honestly except Devito.

Also , I heard about the rumor of Taron Egerton and Ariana Grande being eyed for Hercules and Meg and I don’t see them as those characters honestly.

Here’s my picks….

Wolfgang Novogratz as Hercules

Liz Gillies as Meg

Sam Rockwell as Hades…

@TheVisionary25 - Rockwell would be great as Hades, but I'm pretty much Team "Anyone but James Woods."

The live action Disney remakes I have seen overall have been a mixed bag but Hercules is probably the only one I’m looking forward to right now…

I personally thought Ritchie’s Aladdin was decent (though not as good as the animated one obviously) but hopefully this is even better.

@m1doriya - it's sad that's his highest grossing movie. Technically that's what he's best known for, when it's so manufactured you can't even make out his style.

They're pretty all over the place with who returns for the remakes. They couldn't bring back Nathan lane or Jeremy irons, but they brought back James earl Jones when he sounds like a confused grandpa at this point?

And for the record, I do think Danny devito could work.

My opinion about this is the same as bringing James Earl Jones back as Mufasa in the Lion King remake was.

If you are going to remake a movie, do something different, recast every role, no matter how iconic the original actor is in the role, and the original guy is frankly more than likely too old to give a performance as good as they did decades ago.

Make it happen!

I loathe these remakes but that would be the best casting yet in one of these.

hell yeah! he always made me laugh in his 80's movies- "throw mama from the train", "war of the roses", "romancing the stone", "ruthless people"...i never saw "sunny in philadelphia"...but there is something totally iconic about his voice and how he uses it.
