We first heard about Disney's Lilo and Stich live-action remake back in 2020, and the movie has now made its first major casting addition.

THR reports that actor/comedian Zach Galifianakis (Between Two Ferns, The Hangover) has closed a deal to star in the film.

Though the trade didn't reveal any details on his role at the time,it's since come to light that he'll actually be playing Pleakley, the one-eyed alien who pursues Stitch along with his creator, Dr. Jumba Jookiba, and dresses as a woman in an effort to blend in.

Crazy Rich Asians filmmaker Jon M. Chu was originally in negotiations to helm the project, but Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) will now direct.

Rideback's Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are producing. Mike Van Waes wrote an early draft of the script, but Chris Kekaniokalani Bright penned the most recent version.

Lilo & Stitch tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelekai who forms a bond with a blue alien called Experiment 626, who was engineered to be a force of destruction. It wasn't considered one of the Mouse House's bigger hits from a box office standpoint, but it remains a very popular entry in Disney's library, having spawned three direct-to-video sequels and a 2003 TV series.

What do you guys make of this news? Are you looking forward to a new take on Lilo and Stitch, or do you have Disney remake burnout at this stage? Drop us a comment down below.

@Mrtoke - I feel like Auli'i Cravalho might get the role. She already voices Moana and 22 is around the age I imagine Nani would be when taking care of Lilo.

This movie was one of my all time favourites when I was a kid, it made me laugh so much next with The Emperor's New Groove.

I guess he has the enough comedy acting chops to do it.

These Disney live action remakes have been pretty meh overall. Hopefully this one isn't just another bland retread.

Huh. It could be good. Sounds kind of like a Space Jam situation. Actors interacting with animation. Or maybe they will develop a creepy blue gremlin like alien. Stitch is gonna be creepy AF. No way would a parent trust a gremlin looking alien monster with their daughter but I guess were living in weird times.

Honestly I feel like the movies that would benefit most from a modern live action reboot is Atlantis and treasure planet. Those movies have potential to be big hits… especially Atlantis. It has such a unique story and environment that it would lend itself to live action very well. I also worry because there’s only been like 2 remakes from Disney that have been good.

Hey, after fifteen mediocre remakes, maybe this one will finally be good.
