THE LION KING Trailer Racks Up 224 Million Views For Second-Biggest Debut Ever, Behind AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Disney's "live-action" adaptation of The Lion King is off to a roaring start. The Jon Favreau-directed remake of the 1994 animated classic made its highly anticipated debut via a teaser trailer that was released Thanksgiving night and audiences gobbled it up to the tune of 224.6 million global views in 24 hours. Disney celebrated the milestone with a simple post that thanked the "entire pride" for a successful debut.

The teaser for the upcoming remake, which blends CGI with live-action to bring Pride Rock to life with stunning realism, offered us a glimpse of the iconic "Circle of Life" sequence. It featured the great James Earl Jones — returning to voice Mufasa  — giving his "everything the light touches" speech before  we break into The Circle of Life song.

We are then treated to brief sequences of animals gathering to celebrate the birth of Simba; there's also a scene that offers a bit of foreshadowing regarding Mufasa's well-known fate.

Though the teaser was brief, it absolutely got fans excited as evidenced by the massive number of views. In fact, The Lion King teaser is second only to the trailer for Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War for most views in 24 hours. The first trailer Infinity War racked up over 230 million views in the first 24 hours, so The Lion King was a very close second. However, both trailers will likely be knocked down a peg when Marvel debuts the highly anticipated trailer for Avengers 4, which is expected to arrive before the end of 2018.

In case you missed The Lion King teaser the first time, here it is:

From Disney Live Action, director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king must overcome betrayal and tragedy to assume his rightful place on Pride Rock.

2019 is shaping up to be another massive year for Disney. The company's movie studios will release several big titles including Captain Marvel (March 8), Avengers 4 (May 3), Aladdin (May 24), Toy Story 4  (June 21), The Lion King (July 19), Frozen 2  (November 22), and Star Wars: Episode IX (December 20).

So the biggest question will be: how will the new Lion King recontextualize the story. What new CONTEXT will it have; how will it be FRAMED, ie Sleeping Beauty being re-framed as a rape allegory tale about Maleficent.

Well, here's how I think they will (and should) do it...

Frame Scar as a Killmonger-esque villain you can sympathize with and understand, rather than just a moustache-twirling bad guy (Jeremy Irons was brilliant, but Scar was pretty by-the-numbers). Still make him a PSYCHOPATH, but give it a twist, by making Mufasa sort of to blame for Scar's actions. Simba learns about Mufasa's dirty laundry and instead worshipping Mufasa, he understands that his father wasn't perfect, and decides to be a better man - and a better king - than his father.

More Black Panther over Hamlet.

@Brave - I see what you're aiming at, but I think the villain we can sympathize with already starts to be the new norm for villains. Although, I don't know what they will do, I too think they are definitely gonna recontextualize it for modern day audience

@Brave - to understand how Disney will approach Lion King Live Action...just go back and watch Lion King The Cartoon.

@Brave - I was thinking about this and I'm not sure people will like it.

There are people who already (wrongly and ignorantly) compare BP to the Lion King, so having this new one take a similar route might not be received well.

Second, I don't think anyone is really ready for Mufasa to be cast in a negative light. He's an iconic fictional father figure for MANY people. T'Chaka worked the way he did because we didn't really look up to him, so he only had that perfect image to T'Challa, not us.

I think what they should do is instead of Scar being like Killmonger, he should be more like Hela. Scar exposes that past lion kings and packs got to were they are now by seizing Pride Rock by force. The forbidden lands were where the lions used to reside but left due to drought/famine, went to Pride Rock and forcefully set up a monarchy until there was peace via subjugation, but eventually cooperation. Scar wants the lions go back to the way things were, but Mufasa and his camp want to hold on to the peace, so Scar kills him.

Not surprised at all. This film will be a beast. I'm saying it now, don't be surprised if this rivals Avengers 4, box office wise.
