Millions of viewers have made The Little Mermaid part of their world since the movie debuted on Disney+ on September 6.

Disney's most recent live-action reimagining may not have performed quite as well as the House of Mouse would no doubt have been expecting or hoping at the box office, but the divisive retelling of the 1989 animated classic has certainly made a big splash on streaming.

According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has become the second most-viewed Disney+ movie premieres of all time after Hocus Pocus 2, racking up 16 million views after just five days on the streaming service.

To calculate the amount of “views,” Disney reportedly divides a title’s total viewing time by its run time, which is the same process used to assess the early streaming numbers for the premiere episode of Ahsoka.

After enchanting audiences around the world, The Little Mermaid made a big splash on Disney+ this weekend.

The live-action reimagining of the studio’s Academy Award-winning animated musical starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy is the most viewed Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since Hocus Pocus 2, garnering 16 million views in its first five days streaming.

Its success on Disney+ follows a strong theatrical run this summer. The movie—which was directed by Rob Marshall and opened over Memorial Day weekend to $118.6 million in North America—was one of the top five highest-grossing films of the summer domestically, with nearly $300 million.

The Little Mermaid—which also stars Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, and Awkwafina—is also among 2023’s top ten films worldwide to date, earning $570 million at the global box office. The film was praised by audiences who gave it an “A” CinemaScore and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

2023’s The Little Mermaid builds on the incredible legacy of the original 1989 classic, continuing to bring the story to life through a treasure trove of merchandising, parks and resorts attractions, video games, books and theater productions for millions of fans around the world. The release of the live action The Little Mermaid has also given a boost to Disney’s existing library resulting in tremendous engagement for The Little Mermaid animated films on Disney+.

Disney+ is the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, along with The Simpsons and much more. In select international markets, it also includes the general entertainment content brand, Star. The flagship direct-to-consumer streaming service from Disney, Disney+ offers an ever-growing collection of exclusive originals, including feature-length films, documentaries, live-action and animated series, and short-form content. With unprecedented access to Disney’s long history of incredible film and television entertainment, Disney+ is also the exclusive streaming home for the newest releases from The Walt Disney Studios. Disney+ is available as a standalone streaming service, as part of the Disney Bundle in the U.S. that gives subscribers access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, or as part of Combo+ in Latin America with Star+, the standalone general entertainment and sports streaming service in the region.

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

One of the better redos, though that's like saying a slap to the face is better than a kick. To all the incels chagrin, the best part was easily Halle Bailey, thing falls apart without her

@Cap1 - ...why incel? Wouldn't the complaint be that she's a woman, and not the actual complaint that she isn't a white red head?

At least be consistent.

But even then, if it genuinely falls apart without one specific actor, it isn't a well constructed movie. The original didn't have that problem (though the Ariel actress was quite good).

@Cap1 - ah cap1. Continuing to insult instead of coming up with an actual counterpoint.

@Origame - counterpointing with you is like trying to staple jelly to a tree. It's an endless and pointless task

@Cap1 - funny thing is you chose jelly. Dude, jelly is super easy to stick to a tree, don't even need the staple 🤣

But really, the reason it's an endless and pointless task is because you know you're wrong but won't admit it.
