THE LITTLE MERMAID Takes In $10M From Preview Screenings Ahead Of Potential $125M Weekend

Disney's latest live-action remake, The Little Mermaid, is off to a strong start at the box office after taking in over $10 million from Thursday previews. The movie is now looking at a $120M+ debut weekend.

Even when the critics aren't won over, Disney's live-action reimaginings of its animated classics usually perform very well at the box office, and it doesn't sound like Rob Marshall's The Little Mermaid is going to buck the trend.

According to the latest estimates (via Variety), the musical fantasy adventure looks set to make a massive splash when it swims into theaters this Memorial Day weekend, amassing $100 million from 4,300 North American theaters in its first three days of release, and $120 million to $125 million by Monday’s holiday.

Though that obviously remains to be seen, the movie is off to a strong start with $10M+ from preview screenings (made up of takings from Wednesday's 6PM fan screenings and early Thursday shows).

If these predictions prove to be accurate, The Little Mermaid will become the fourth movie (and third from Disney) this year to clear the $100 million mark over its opening weekend, following The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146 million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106 million).

Just like Ariel, we'll have to see if the movie is able to hold on to its legs over the next few weeks, but reviews have been pretty positive for the most part (it's currently sitting at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% audience score).

Do you plan on seeing The Little Mermaid in theaters this weekend?

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.

While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The movie is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2023.

This movie was always destined to do well at the box office. It’s the last of the era that revitalized Disney animation. The other 3 from that era - Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King - all did very well too.

Other Disney live action movies won’t have as much nostalgia fueling them. Those 4 movies were something special for audiences and are all still incredibly popular to this day.

Hercules could do well too as it only came out a few years later, but it didn’t do as well as these four did. I imagine that one will be more of a reimagining vs a direct remake like these ones were.

"I dont care about this movie. Its complete garbage. As a 41 yr old man who has not seen, nor do I plan on seeing this movie, everyone knows that it's my opinion that matters most. Not the children that are this movie's target demographic."

There, I said it for you all so you can move along with your lives.

That being said, it does actually look pretty good. I'll wait for it to hit streaming, but I do wanna see it.

@dragon316 - I plan to see it as well. Just nor in theaters. My comment was directed at the grown adults who have been complaining about a children's movie that they've never seen and supposedly don't care about.

@pitbull76 - Well I'm 47 and when my oldest daughter asked me not too log ago who my favorite Disney Princess was I said "Ariel" and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I'm also not ashamed to admit that every time I watch "Transformers: The Movie" ('86) I tear up whenever Prime dies and also when Hotrod becomes Rodimus Prime. Nothing wrong with being a grown up and still being moved by the things we grew up with.

@StSteven - I feel you on the on the transformers but the animation version of little mermaid was after ny time.

@pitbull76 - Well I didn't "grow up" on "The Little Mermaid" per se (I'm the same age as you), but of the modern Disney animated movies (i.e. post-"Snow White", "Cinderella", etc. which I did watch as a kid), "The Little Mermaid" was the one that I liked the most when I was that age, mainly because of the underwater aspect (I'm a salt-water fish enthusiast among other things) and the catchy tunes. After that I'd have to say "Aladdin", but that was mainly because of Robin Williams (and also the catchy tunes).

@bobevanz - People should watch the Guillermo Del Toro's version of Pinocchio, and realize that Disney just does not give a shit about making good movies.
