Disney and Pixar's
Toy Story 4 has arrived just in the nick of time to resurrect the box office with a stellar $238 million worldwide ($118M domestic; $120M foreign) launch, making it the biggest debut for an animated film ever.
Domestically, the critically acclaimed Josh Cooley-directed sequel did fall considerably short of initial projections, which suggested a debut in the $140 million to $165 million range. But its $118 million opening was still more than good enough to make it the largest opening weekend for a
Toy Story film, the third-highest opening for a Pixar film, and the fourth-highest opening for an animated film ever.
Luckily, well-received Disney/Pixar films have a long history of having healthy legs throughout the summer months, so expect some pretty solid holds over the coming months as the sequel takes aim at becoming the second installment in the franchise and the fourth Pixar film to top the $1 billion mark.
In related BO news, Disney's
Aladdin continues to hold well in its fifth frame, finishing third domestically and bringing its worldwide total past $810 million ($287.5M domestic; $522.6M foreign). Sony's
Men in Black: International dipped to fourth in its second weekend, taking its worldwide total to $182 million ($52.6M domestic; $129.4M foreign).
Lionsgate's
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is also another solid performer, moving up to seventh in its sixth frame, taking its worldwide total to $289.1 million ($156M domestic; $133.1M foreign). Warner Bros.'
Godzilla: King of the Monsters finished eighth in its fourth frame, taking its worldwide total to $349.9 million ($102.3M domestic; $247.6M foreign), and 20th Century Fox's
Dark Phoenix dipped to ninth in its third frame, taking its worldwide total to $232.9 million ($60.1M domestic; $172.8M foreign).
Meanwhile, Marvel's
Avengers: Endgame brought in another $1.8 million in its ninth frame, bringing its worldwide total to $2.749 billion ($834.5M domestic; $1.9B foreign). The Infinity Saga finale is now only $39 million behind James Cameron's
Avatar to become the highest-grossing film of all-time. Whether or not the upcoming re-release will push it over the edge remains to be seen, but it does seem increasingly likely that the six minutes of bonus footage may just do the trick.
