Trailers and TV spots for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made it clear that Rachel McAdams would be playing a Variant in the sequel, with the prevailing theory being that she would suit up as Clea. Since then, we've learned that's not the case, with the actress instead starring as both the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Christine and another version of the character from a different reality.
Talking to The Playlist, McAdams confirmed that when she was initially asked to return for Sam Raimi's sequel, it was with the expectation that she would be playing three Christine Palmer Variants.
"It did change a little bit from what I was originally told, [which was] that it would be three different versions, and we wound up with two different versions in the end. But they said I’d be playing a very different version of the Christine Palmer I played in the first film, that I wasn’t an emergency room doctor, just a completely different person with a completely different life experience."
Teasing what fans can expect from that Variant, the actress added: "She’s definitely in a bit of a more fantastical world than the world of gritty emergency room in New York. I love doing action. I love being physical as an actor. It’s just really satisfying to get to participate in that way."
Very little has been revealed about what we can expect from this Christine, though promos have suggested she might have ties to The Illuminati given where she's been shown spending time.
We can't help but wonder what that third Variant might have looked like, but having seen the movie (you can read our review by clicking here), it's hard to say where she could have appeared. If you're curious to learn how many other Variants show up in the sequel, then you can find a full list here.
