Ten days ago,
of The Wrap reported that Benedict Cumberbatch was in the mix for '
Dr. Stephen Strange' role in Marvel's upcoming film,
Doctor Strange, and today,
Deadline is reporting that Marvel has chosen Cumberbatch for the role. As of right now the actor is "final negotiations" which means he will more than likely sign on. Though, the same was said about Joaquin Phoenix just before the San Diego Comic-Con and he ended up passing. I'm sure Marvel wouldn't let that happen again.
Cumberbatch is currently garnering some major Oscar buzz for his performance as 'Alan Turing' in the biopic,
The Imitation Game, but
Doctor Strange, if is as successful as previous Marvel films, could finally make Cumberbatch a household name here in the States.
Doctor Strange will be directed by
Sinister and
Deliver Us From Evil director,
Scott Derrickson. The script is currently being rewritten by
Prometheus screenwriter
Jon Spaihts, based on the original script written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.
The character from Marvel Comics, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, was an egotistical neurosurgeon that damages his hands during an accident. With the inability to be a surgeon any more Stephen is desperate for a cure and looks and hight and low. This hunt for a cure leads him to the magical and mystical elements of the Marvel universe, where he will later harness these powers to become the
Sorcerer Supreme.
