Eternals was Marvel Studios' first "Rotten" movie, and those mixed reviews ultimately led to it underperforming at the box office (at a time where success was far from guaranteed thanks to the pandemic), The blockbuster ended on a huge cliffhanger, though there's still no mention of a sequel.
We had heard rumblings about something being announced at Comic-Con or D23, but the Eternals didn't receive so much as a single mention at either event.
During a recent interview with GQ, Druig actor Barry Keoghan acknowledged that the franchise's fate is unclear, saying he hopes to play the character again. However, the conversation took place a day after Comic-Con, prompting him to point out, "[They] didn’t really mention Eternals 2, so..." It's said he "seems bruised by it," so the actor is clearly disappointed.
It would be a real shame for that story to be left unresolved, and even a self-contained Marvel Studios Special Presentation on Disney+ would be a good way to tie up those loose ends. A fresh approach to a sequel could help save these characters, but we'll have to wait and see.
Keoghan also reflected on being cast in Eternals, revealing that happened two months after cameras on the movie had started rolling. "They wanted someone older," he recalls, crediting Chloé Zhao with choosing him to play the anti-hero. She says, "He searched and wandered at first, but when he found Druig in him, the character burst into life in an instant."
Marvel Studios hasn't even properly acknowledged the fact there's a marble Celestial in the Indian Ocean, so how important the Eternals will be to the Multiverse Saga remains to be seen (we're guessing not very). Hopefully, future plans will become clear as we head deeper into Phase 5.
