ETERNALS Star Barry Keoghan Seems Doubtful That Marvel Studios Will Move Forward With A Sequel

Eternals wasn't exactly Marvel Studios' first flop, but it didn't quite live up to expectations. Now, star Barry Keoghan has addressed his future as Druig, but seems doubtful that sequel news is coming.

Eternals was Marvel Studios' first "Rotten" movie, and those mixed reviews ultimately led to it underperforming at the box office (at a time where success was far from guaranteed thanks to the pandemic), The blockbuster ended on a huge cliffhanger, though there's still no mention of a sequel.

We had heard rumblings about something being announced at Comic-Con or D23, but the Eternals didn't receive so much as a single mention at either event.

During a recent interview with GQ, Druig actor Barry Keoghan acknowledged that the franchise's fate is unclear, saying he hopes to play the character again. However, the conversation took place a day after Comic-Con, prompting him to point out, "[They] didn’t really mention Eternals 2, so..." It's said he "seems bruised by it," so the actor is clearly disappointed.

It would be a real shame for that story to be left unresolved, and even a self-contained Marvel Studios Special Presentation on Disney+ would be a good way to tie up those loose ends. A fresh approach to a sequel could help save these characters, but we'll have to wait and see.

Keoghan also reflected on being cast in Eternals, revealing that happened two months after cameras on the movie had started rolling. "They wanted someone older," he recalls, crediting Chloé Zhao with choosing him to play the anti-hero. She says, "He searched and wandered at first, but when he found Druig in him, the character burst into life in an instant."

Marvel Studios hasn't even properly acknowledged the fact there's a marble Celestial in the Indian Ocean, so how important the Eternals will be to the Multiverse Saga remains to be seen (we're guessing not very). Hopefully, future plans will become clear as we head deeper into Phase 5.

Check out our interview with Keoghan about his Eternals role below:

It's a true test to see if they simply made one for a quick buck, or they're heavily involved in the future and we just don't know it yet.

It’s a low ok movie. I thought Barry was going to be the villain but I was so wrong. Wish Kit had more screen time as Dane

How unfortunate. Was easily better than Black Widow and Thor: love and ass farts.

I dunno, the movie felt more standalone anyway, more like it was setting up the characters for other appearances elsewhere rather than a direct sequel. Like, we know who and what the Eternals are now, they had their big arc (choosing humanity over their original mission) so it feels like it would make more sense to open things up and allow the characters to branch out, like Dane potentially being part of Blade, maybe Eros appearing in something like GOTG, etc.

@AC1 - This is kind of how I hope they are used . Maybe a series or special on D+ to put some of them in place for other things but mostly to accentuate the weight of things happening in other projects. Like, we know it’s heavy of an eternal or two shows up, type thing…

@JustAChillFan - they will. Feige doesn't like loose ends, and Eternals left a lot of them.

This whole article is just based on the actor assuming there won't be a movie because one wasn't mentioned at Comic Con.

If anything he was the most interesting character of the bunch...

@Urubrodi - I don't know about that, but I would say he has the most interesting power set maybe.

Someone with mind control ability could provide definite problems for the MCU and puts heroes in a tricky situation. Kind of a "can't shoot the hostage" situation if his powers are used for evil.

I'd rather they drop the Eternals and keep their focus on what audiences want to see. I couldn't care about a single character in that movie. Seemed like the entire plot was telegraphed from the start, and the rest of the movie just went like 'yes, it's exactly what you figured would happen ! Crazy, right ?!'

Along with Thor 2, IM2, BW and CM, it was some of the most boring MCU movie.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Oh yeah, as soon as those cavemen saw a kaiju come out of the sea I said to myself "This movies gonna end with the Earth being revelaed to be a giant celestial egg and a baby space god's gonna come out of the Indian Ocean"!

@OrgasmicPotatoe - I'm well aware. Not everyone is going to like EVERY single thing Marvel Studios pumps out. Doesn't mean they should suddenly abandon those projects when just as many, if not more, people have liked said projects.
JonC
JonC - 10/5/2022, 5:47 PM
@OrgasmicPotatoe - based on box office, some of those that people 'didn't like' actually did much better than those that people now reminisce about fondly. what people 'want to see' is just individual opinions... and it takes a collective vision (Feige) to give fans what they ultimately 'want'... the MCU is built on 'inclusion' and it far surpasses anything that has come previous to it or likely after it. By being inclusive its likely to have things you don't like if you are that kind of person.

They need to merge the franchise with Thor and resuscitate both. Stop with the slapstick comedy and utilize a villain that is both formidable and better conceived.

Really disappointing to hear. Eternals was not as bad as the critics say it was. One constant negative about the MCU in recent years is how formulaic it has gotten, so they try something new and people hated on it. I’ll admit, I enjoyed it less when I rewatched at home - as the IMAX experience really enhanced it. It’s a stunning looking film with some interesting ideas, and yes it’s slower, yes it’s quieter but that’s not always a bad thing. It seeded some really nice ideas of the Eternals in Earth mythology - which Thor 4 has gone and what all over. This film knew what it wanted it to be Zhao achieved it. The fact that this is still sitting lower than Love and Thunder is a crime because that film is utter dogshit and ludicrously off base. One of the worst films I’ve seen in ten years, and it’s so polarising they’re removing Waititi off a potential 5th one. Good riddance. Also, no mention of an eternals sequel at Comic Con means nothing, there’s a ton of empty announced dates and things have shifted in the past.

I didn’t hate it but it could have been better. I think this would have been better as a series instead of a movie. Inhumans should have been given a movie instead.

The movie was a total wasted opportunity, why make them robots, why not stick with canon. Agreed with most negative Reponses but wanted to add the celestials. They totally screwed the celestials; these are more powerful than anything we have seen. Also, there is no way an eternal can kill a celestial, even one being born or whatever and what about the giant one in the pacific, full of plot holes and cringe. The only action was Ikaris using his eyebeams, Superman and DC have done that for years, nothing else cool. We have seen the kaiju in Godzilla and Pacific Rim, and i hated that they made Ikaris bad, get a real big/bad, its marvel there are thousands. Just missed and blaa. Still Love and blunder was 1000 times worse and its the worse movie ever in Marvel.

Ah, thought they confirmed making a sequel some months ago? The whole Celestials film? I can see them doing that. We need more of Keoghan anyway, Druig was a standout, right along Makkari and Thena.
