Baddies That Need Movie Love: Darkseid

Baddies That Need Movie Love: Darkseid

For the 10th installment of Baddies That Need Movie Love, I bring you a bad ass villain that many have requested. Darkseid has been a formidable foe for Superman and other DC heroes for over 40 years now and has repeatedly landed on many lists of top villains.

Welcome once again to Baddies That Need Movie Love! I've reached a bit of a milestone here, bringing you my 10th article in the series and to celebrate, I am highlighting a villain that many of you have requested and suggested, but I wanted to save him for a "special occasion" of sorts. One of the biggest complaints that people have regarding Superman Returns was the lack of action and fight scenes (which will hopefully be remedied with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel next year) and a solution to that problem would be to add a more physical villain, rather than Lex Luthor. Enter Darkseid.

Darkseid's rise to power on Apokolips was a violent one, one that involved family betrayal and the loss of loved ones, which led to his animosity towards good, hardeneing his heart, matching his rough exterior. When his Brother, Drax, attempted to harness the Omega Force for his own, Darkseid, known as Uxas, killed his brother and took the Omega Force, which changed this appearance to the rock-like surface we see today. At this time, he changed his name to Darkseid. He ultimately fell for a scientist, Suli, and had a son together. When Suli was killed, at the request of Darkseid's mother, Darkseid took vengeance against his mother and had her killed, making him the supreme ruler of Apokolips.

Seeing other Gods as a threat, Darkseid layed seige upon Themyscira, the home of the Amazons and Princess Diana, a/k/a Wonder Woman, in order to discover the location of the Olympian Gods. Refusing to aid in this venture, the Amazons were forced to defend themselves against Darkseid and his parademon army. Nearly half of the Amazonian populations was erradicated at this time. Wonder Woman gained her revenge when she placed a piece of her soul into Darkseid, weakening him and causing him to lose a bit of his dark edge.

Darkseid's ultimate goal is to rid the universe of free will and to reshape it in his own image. To start this, he sought to unravel the Anti-Life Equation, which gives its owner complete control over the thoughts and emotions of all living things in the universe. This, and other ventures, has lead to Darkseid clashing with many superheroes in the DC Universe, but it his epic battles with Superman that has gained him popularity. Few heroes have been able to take on the likes of Darkseid as Superman and this has led to some of the greatest battles to ever grace the pages of DC Comics pages.

As I mentioned earlier, when we think of Superman, we think of battles raging int he streets of Metropolis and we haven;t seen that since Superman II hit the screens several decades ago. Adding a character like Darkseid to the equation would not only solve this problem, but would make for a Superman film of epic proportions. The potential for ground-breaking (pun intended) fight sequences would be astronomical. If you look at Marvel's The Incredibel Hulk from a few years ago, many consider the ending fight scene in that film to be among the top amongst comic book films. If you were to take a scene like that and toss in the "alien" abilities of Superman and Darkseid, you can just imagine what the end result would be.

When I originally started this article, I wanted to find an actor that is lesser known, just to mix things up a bit. One of which was Steve Harris, who is most known for his roles on The Practice a few years ago. I still think he'd be a decent choice, but he just wasn't "doing it for me," so to speak. I kept going back to a suggestion and fan-favorite. Michael Ironside has had a solid career that has spanned nearly 40 years, but he has never been a "leading man," save for a few films. Despite this fact Ironside has made a name for himself as a solid and dependable actor. You can always expect him to own every role he takes on. Having said that, with a character like Darkseid, I don't think you can get away with putting a man in a rubber-suit and call it good. What I'd like to see is the of motion-cap for the facial features and CGI for the rest of the body. This way, you could still maintiain the humanoid aspect of the character, yet give him the size that he deserves.

Very nice article!

I wouldn't mind seeing Darkseid in a Superman movie, but only if he isn't defeated at the end. I would rather see him in the shadows throughout, and Superman only fights Kalibak or the Furies, and gets his ass handed to him by Darkseid at the end. And the last few scenes lead into a JLA movie where Superman gets help to beat Darkseid. I never liked Darkseid as a "Superman" villain. I tend to see him as more of a shared DC villain, or a Scott Free villain if anthing. That said, I am not completely opposed to Supes fighting Darkside solo, as long as he would return in a JLA movie. Really solid casting choice.

Yes, that would be awesome to see someday. Darkseid stepping through a boom tube with his para-demons and followers. If Man of Steel does good, maybe we will get to see it happen.

Fantastic article, and I totally agree. I have been posting on here for the past six months that Darkseid needs to be shown in live action besides just possessing people. I agree with Nuck82 though, unless Zack Snyder is sick of seeing the same pattern of villains, he won't use him.

Warner needs to start making Web Series like Mortal Kombat is doing, they can experiment with things and figure out what works before they dump 200 million into a box office disaster again.

Justice Smith would be prefect for the motion captioning with Michael Ironside as the voice and facial features.

Michael Ironside should be Darkseid. Apart from voicing him THE BEST, he also has the right kind of barely-contained craziness about him.

I don't think filmmakers or audiences are anywhere near ready for Darkseid yet, though.

This is a character who shoots beams that chase people and rules over a dead, burning, morale-draining planet... in another dimension.... which can only be reached from ours via boomtube.

That is not to say that we should have an in-depth introduction to the Fourth world. Just the opposite in fact. I think a boomtube should surprise everyone. It's just the level of detail and execution coupled with a somewhat faithful adaptation (at least of Darkseid's uncompromising nature) of that realm that I'm concerned about.

They could throw WW in the Supes movie for a little cameo, considering his origins!

totally agree, but darksied is a big bad muthu[frick]ca. he's not the guy you want to start the new supes era with, he's got to be the one for the sequel though.

I'm working on a fan-trilogy. Darkseid will be the villain in part 3. I won't ruin the story, but I think it'll be an alright film. Hopefully it'll be fun set though.

Darkseid definitely needs to be in a film. I'd rather he be in a Justice League film though (what I'd imagine is a Superman trilogy with Zod/Doomsday/Brainiac, while a JLA trilogy would have Darkseid as a behind-the-scenes villain in the first two installments, then be an all-out villain in the third film), because it'd be so epic.

As for who should play him....Michael Clarke Duncan or Michael Ironside all the way!

I always thought Michael Clarke Duncan was the perfect actor to bring Darkseid to life. Now hes been involved with two disappointing cbms so would he even do it? If I had my way he would never have been in Green Lantern because I'm usin'em in Man Of Steel!

I don't think it will ever happen... Hollywood and whomever only want Superman to fight the bald guy and catch stuff. For some reason the city be blown up but never destroyed from Superman fighting... If he would ever fight. Superman 2 and 4 had some fighting but was a joke.

Michael Clarke Duncan would be ok I think, but he just doesn't seem to be a great fit to me. Darkseid has a certain malevolent regalness about him, like an incredibly evil king. There has to be a certain sophistication about him that I don't think Michael Clarke Duncan can pull off. My choice would be Dennis Haysbert.

i agree with ecks, it should be motion capture, darkseid should be physically imposing even to supes and it should be voiced by ironside, he was perfect in the dcau.. im just about sick of michael clark duncan voicing every big or deep voiced character in comics..

Michael Ironside is Darkseid just like how Mark Hamill is the Joker. His voice acting in Superman the Animated Series and Justice League are fantastic and he would do so awesome in a movie.
