The rock could play a long list of characters on screen, so why not Aquaman?

Could Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson play Aquaman in the DC Cinematic Universe?

As a DC comics fan, I was excited to hear that The Rock signed a deal with Warner Brothers to be a part of the DC Cinematic Universe. Immediately I began to think about all the characters a charismatic action movie star like The Rock could portray. I thought possibly Black Adam, Lobo or even Bane once Affleck’s Batman reboots the character. I also saw many blogs suggesting John Stewart GL, Martian Manhunter and even Cyborg.

After further thought, I found flaws with all of those choices. I think The Rock is almost too much of a physical presence to portray Martian Manhunter or John Stewart. Although Martian Manhunter and John Stewart are among the most powerful beings in the universe, it would be weird to see those characters look far more physically imposing than Superman (The Rock is much bigger and buffer than Henry Caville). The problem with Cyborg is that he has always been portrayed as a teenager/young man and The Rock is currently 41 years old. I think The Rock would be fantastic as Black Adam, Lobo or Bane, but I feel like that would be underutilizing as an actor. If he did portray one of those villains, it would in all likelihood be a one-time appearance in film as a supporting character to the character’s respective foe (Shazam/Captain Marvel, Superman and Batman).

I then began to see rumors that Jason Momoa could be portraying Aquaman. Although Aquaman is often ridiculed for being a useless character in comparison to the other Justice League members, he’s still arguably the most recognizable character in the DC universe other than Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash. There’s no reason to think that Jason Momoa would make a better Aquaman than The Rock. A physically imposing action star with charisma and actual acting chops like the Rock is born to play the leading man in a standalone superhero film. I also think an actor like The Rock could help change the stigma attached to the character because he’s such a popular actor and is able to bring a sense of badass to most of his movies. The fact that The Rock made his contract with Warner Brothers so public leaves me to believe that he’s going to appear in multiple films and possible star in his own standalone film.

Your thoughts?

The character he was born to play ;)

Cool read btw, I wouldn't say no to Aquaman as long as he went, um... darkish blonde.

No. Better fit for Doomsday. And even Lex Luthor (seriously, think it through.)

Did it ever say DC Cinematic Universe? He just said DC. It could be a comic!

I respect the OP's reasons in wanting the Rock as Aquaman, and I do agree with it actually as the very image of the Rock would be enough to show to the general public of the JL film that Aquaman isn't a weakly powered outlandish character.

However, I'd honestly prefer the Rock to play Steve Trevor, that way he would appear more often in the DCCU and if he is in BvS, the film wouldn't be overcrowded with superheroes, and Trevor could be easily linked to the main story. Still, good ideas with the article.

What a horrible casting choice.

Quite frankly, I don't like him for any of these (except maybe Black Adam.) I definitely can't see him as any member of Justice League, especially Aquaman.

John Stewart wouldn't be a bad choice IMO.

I dont think he's too bulked up for the role.
from my understanding John Stewart is a retired Marine in has mid/late 30s to early 40s.

I see John Stewart making a better GL movie than Hal Jordan.
IMO Hal Jordan's GL wasn't that bad, but it could have been a lot better.

I think an origin Story for John Stewart as a sequel to GL that features Ryan Reynolds in a smaller role would be good.

the thing about Green lantern is that its a more flexible role. it has multiple green lanterns and a sequel or possibly even a trilogy doesn't have to be just about Hal Jordan.

Although with Ryan Reynolds going back to Marvel for Deadpool (announced, according to IMDB) I dont think we'll see him back as GL.

I dont understand why Aquaman has to be blonde. That has nothing to do with his character

@Phantom1527
I personally dont care as much for the hair color, but i had seen someone fan cast Liam Mcintyre (Spartacus) as Aquaman and it showed a picture of him with a light brown hair.

Aquaman was abandoned on Mercy Reef as a baby because of his blonde hair, which was seen by the Atlanteans as a curse. You obviously know nothing about Aquaman.

I dont mind if The Rock where to be cast as Aquaman. I think it would be interesting. However, i would prefer the actor to portray another DC character maybe even Lobo or Black Adam.

As long as he's not John Stewart. GL should not make Superman(although I hate him) look like a tiny wimp of a man.
