FAN ART: Mon Ami! Channing Tatum As GAMBIT From X-MEN

Ever since news of 22 Jump Street star Channing Tatum would be playing the role of Gambit, a.k.a. Remy LeBeau, in X-Men: Apocalypse and then given his own solo spin-off film, people have been wondering what Channing might look like as the Cajun mutant.

The story behind Channing Tatum ("Jupiter Ascending") getting the role of Gambit in 20th Century Fox's X-Men cinematic universe is truly remarkable. Think about it, how many times have you seen an actor express interest in a superhero role and actually get that role? This is the only time I can recall.

I'm sure most of you have been daydreaming about what Magic Mike might look like as card-throwing mutant when X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner made the casting official in May. Put those daydreams away and enjoy this illustration that Deviant Art member, Metalblackfae, created of Channing as Gambit. What do you think of it?

Gambit has the mutant ability to tap into the potential energy contained within an object and transform it into kinetic energy upon touching it. When Gambit thus charges an object and throws it at a target, the object releases this energy explosively on impact. Gambit is unable to use this power to charge living objects. / As Death: He can control deadly gas.

Gambit also possesses a hypnotic charm that allows him to exert a subtle influence over any sentient mind. This power allows Gambit to compel others to believe what he says and agree with anything he suggests. More powerful minds have proven immune to Gambit's charm. - Marvel Wiki

I literally just got back from 22 Jump Steet. I'm all for Tatum taking this role.

Looks just like Gambit. Almost dead on. I'm eager to see what he can so with it. He seems to love the character and is determined I get him down pat with the accent and everything

Sweet Jesus... I'm sorry, but that's not helping Channing Tatum's case lol.

The artist is very talented. That's just not Gambit to me though. That's pretty much how I pictured him too. Awful.

I am kinda looking forward to seeing him as Gambit. I definite think Tatum is a better choice than Klitch, who just didn't feel right.

Don't forget Paul Giamatti lobbied for the role of Rhino as he loves the character, and he got it.

As cool as this fan art is, they aren't going to give him the face appliances/head band. I imagine we'll get something similar to Taylor Kitsch in Origins.

I never understood the face band that Gambit wears. Can someone school me on it?

I was talking about the skit. THe fan art is sick. As long as Gambit has his black Mask covering ears and what not, it'll work fine.

Yikes. I wish i could conjure up something nice to say but it's just so difficult when the actor is so wrong for the role.

Channing Tatum's always got my support. Dude can act he just needs to be given good material (21/22 Jump Street, Magic Mike, Side Effects) and not shit (Step-Up, GI JOE).

Hell without Tatum a Gambit solo film probably wouldn't even be considered. Fox feels they need the star power for a film about a single X-Men character to make it successful. Of course after the large box office of DOFP that may change for X-Men films now.

@Mercwitham0uth - You speak the truth. FOX/Singer will find a way to frig up the Cajun...AGAIN. Singer wasn't involved the first time around, but this time we'll get the Gambit that SINGER wants. Be prepared for a Gambit without a trench coat or without the famous black open face wrap.

the perfect gambit would be a young vincent cassel.

Considering this is a Bryan Singer X-Men film, it's far more likely that his costume will resemble something like this.

I watched 21 Jump Street for the first time yesterday, it was hilarious. Channing Tatum does have acting chops, but he is just wrong for Gambit IMHO.

just wait until the reviews/numbers for the jupiter rising movie come back.....no more fantasy roles for this guy.

This guy is good to watch but some actors are not suited to some roles.

Taylor Kitsch was perfect,just unlucky.
If he returned in the role the viewing audience would be fine with it.

Here we go again with people prematurely saying that Fox is going to make a sh*t adaptation of a beloved character. Everyone relentlessly bashed on Evan Peter's Quicksilver the moment we saw the first picture of him, and then the vast majority of people who saw the film ended up saying Quicksilver was the highlight of the movie, and he was only in it for about 10-15 minutes. I think Fox has earned the benefit of a doubt here. I wouldn't be surprised if Tatum's Gambit ends up being the breakout mutant in Apocalypse just like Quicksilver was in DOFP.

I trust Fox's casting of the X-Men, especially lately. Love the fan art. As long as Tatum looks awesome for the art and performs well he has my support. Jennifer Lawrence really shocked me in DOFP with her performance especially since her role in First Class wasn't all that. Fox/Singer knows what they're doing with the casting. Remember how much shit Evan Peters got as Quicksilver before the movie even came out? I suspect this will have the same result.

Not bad to be honest.
Although I don't necessarily agree with it, he is a highly sought after actor, who's getting great buzz for his dramatic acting lately and we all know he can do comedy.

All I wanna see is Anna Paquin back as Rogue damn it!

I can't understand the demand for Tatum in ANY movie.
It's difficult to fathom,he's a good looking guy but nothing exceptional & has zero charisma or acting chops.
You can cite his filmography..I've seen it,he's bland as hell.

Go back & look at handsome young actors of the past & you can see the looks combined with talent & charm.
Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise are good examples of this, they have what Tatum does not & early in career you could see it.
Channing has done a lot of work..when is he going to get good?

I think Taylor Kitsch is a better choice but he was in a poor movie with Origins.
He's good in the films he stars even if the films are not good or successful.
Taylor had bad luck & Tatum gets all the breaks even though he is piss poor.

Kudos to the artist. But with that said please no. It just looks like...Channing Tatum. Is that all it takes to get a role these days is lobbying hard cuz u "love the character"? If that's the case then all of us here should try out to play our favorite characters and we'll get it! Like another user mentioned Fox is looking for starpower to propel this "unknown" character into his own franchise. (Anyone besides Wolverine and Magneto solos are considered unknowna to Fox). Channing coincidentally is popular rite now, white, tall, has brown hair and is from the south and oh yeah he "loves Gambit" so its a no brainer. Last time i saw Channing play a somehwat serious role was alongside Rachel McAdams where he had to woo his amnesiac wife, which I found very comical. Then of cours we have 21/22 Jump St which is all comedy. I just can't take the guy serious. I would prefer a lesser known up and commer actor who could really delve into the part and own it. Much like Fassbender and Mcavoy did as young Erik & Charles. And knowing Fox he will not be wearing his signature costume (it just looks cool in comic art it is not really functional). Plus if we do get Channing and Hugh together in a film its gonna be beefcake overkill and more possible naked male ass, to which I say "No Thanks". How about casting a well known female actress that can give us a strong and sexy female X-man that has been lacking.
Maybe I'm wrong and he'll be a runaway hit. Peters as Quicksilver became a runaway hit...but I really would not wanna see more than 15 minutes of his sarcastic banter cuz it would get annoying. We can only wait and see. He does have the role.
