Is Chris Nolan running out of ideas?

So Christopher Nolan new batman poster came out, and right away I thought about the inception poster. I know a lot of you thought that also. I'm not saying its a bad poster, but very similar to each other.

I'm not a batman hater, but I am a batman always wins hater. shit's stupid.

meow back to the Nolan and his batman and inception similarities. it doesn't really stop at the poster.he has used so many of the same actors over again in his past 3 ,and even in his upcoming batman movie again.and I don't mean he uses bale over and over again as the same character, I mean same actor playing different characters in different movies

lets see the list

Michael Caine - begins and inception

Ken Watanabe- begins and inception

Cillian Murphy - begins and inception

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - inceptions and rises

Tom Hardy- inception and rises

now to some of you that might not be a lot, but I think it is, and in a short time span. I don't think I have ever really seen that before from a director, I maybe be wrong and if I am I know you guy's will tell me.

now here comes the kicker

is Nolan running out of ideas? why does some stuff look so similar in different movies and type of movies, is he being lazy by not going and finding different actors for roles and just use the same ones?

and don't give me this crap about oh there great actors, yes cain and Watanabe is great, levitt is good, and the other 2 are at par in my mind, but the both great actors had smaller parts in the movies.

Yeah cuz it totally means he's running out of ideas when he uses awesome actors. TOTALLY. So that probably goes the same way with Cameron and Scorsese to you, don't it? They used same actors for several of their films and most of their work turned out great. Whatever. I'm not here to start an argument. Not everybody can enjoy one of hollywood's last engaging Directors.

Every director has their own style and every director
prefers to work with certain actors and actresses.
James Cameron is also somebody who is well known for
using the same actors/actresses in his films.

...also, the guy is the mastermind behind Inception.
Obviously, he hasn't ran out of ideas.

@nuck: i'm not gunna rant here but i just want to put in my two cents.

first off, if you didn't know, which i'm guessing you didn't because half of this article is about it and the premise as a whole, director's usually don't design the posters! that is what a crew is for. he just oversees it and gives a basic idea for the designers to work on. directors don't do EVERYTHING! just saying.

next, big name, critically-acclaimed directors have always been know for using particular actors more than once. as justsomeawesomeguy said above, cameron and scorsese are prime examples. cameron has used arnold in many of his and sigourney weaver in almost half of his movies. scorsese has been known to use DiCaprio in alot of his movies. More directors that do it that are big are Spielberg (matt damon, tom hanks), and Finchner (Brad Pitt, edward norton)

i agree that he uses the same actors quite a bit, but as others pointed out, so do a lot of directors.

as for running out of ideas, every director has their own style, and most directors' movies all seem similar to a certain extent, at least in tone and sound/music, action sequences, things like that.

but Nolan's movies are all very different as far as the plot and stories go. If he were putting out movies with similar plots, then i would agree with you. but he doesn't, so i can't :)

@Corndogburglar, Mack, & joob

Well said.
He may use same actors, but each of his movies feel different from the others. TDK felt extremely different from Batman Begins. And Inception was wayy different from the both of them. Don't know how you can compare inception to the batman movies he did.

And this term 'nolanite' is kinda lame. You might as well call some people Spielbergers, or Kubrickals.

Could be worse, at least he's not using old footage of his old movies like Bay did in DOTM. (I'm not hating,it was lazy but smart, love that movie!)

You dont think directors get say on there movies poster? Lol of course they do. Did he make.it himself, no, but he told them what he wanted and aproofed it.

And yes other directors use the same actors also. But not as many amd not as close together as nolan has been doing

I'd say he is sticking to his comfort zone...
he uses actors he's worked well with before...
as long as he keeps the story fresh, I don't mind him using the same actors.

That being said, nice write up Nuck!

As a Nolanite I understand why he uses the same actors. He enjoys working with them and they take to his style well. He can trust them to keep quiet about projects cause all his movies a shouded in secrecy. Working with the same actors this close together ensures that they wont be buckled down by other projects.
The posters simularities are coincidental and reflect the "personality" of the individual movie. He didnt design them but he aproves them.

@Intruder
I respect you but let me know where he stole his ideas from. I need you to expain your comment. You cant just say something like that and not follow it up with some kind of reference.

Actually if you remember the poster for The Dark Knight, it had an image of a destoryed building with a burning bat-symbol in the background way before any Inception posters came around.

Sorry but your wrong. Michael Caine can never keep his mouth shut lol. But everyone else your right about

@Nuck82
Nolan using the same actors does not mean he is running out of ideas, and neither does the similarities in the poster.
Inception=Dreamworld
Where exaggerated stuff happens.
The Dark Knight Rises
Chaos and destruction will be brought to Gotham. I see this poster as Gotham City being destroyed or "Falling" as I believe Ras Al Gul wanted in Batman Begins

No. No. uh-uh!!!!!!!!
Nolan sticks with actors that he knows can get a job done, and that he has a good realationship with. Also, the posters are completely different, you need to stop being so picky and enjoy it.
nuck82
nuck82 - 7/13/2011, 10:04 AM
im not being picky, i dont really care, just put this up to see what other people thought, and to see how many "Nolanites" would come out of the works to bash me lol

The poster is a bit suspect but the casting of the same actors doesn't bother me much. It happens all the time in live theatre, directors find actors they enjoy working with and get good performances out of and tend to stick with them.
golden123
golden123 - 7/13/2011, 10:27 AM
How are the posters "very similar"? Just because they both have crumbeling buildings doesn't mean much. They share a similarity, but there definitly not "very similar". I mean the posters are at different angles, they have different lighting, one has characters in it and one doesn't, one has the title of the movie and it's catchphrase and a whole lot more info, the other just says "Summer 2011", and one is on a beach and has water the other has the symbol of the main character. I'm not seeing a whole lot of similarities. Your actor argument is poor because alot of directors try to use the same actors. It means the director knows they can act and can work with them well.

If you want to claim that Nolan is running out of ideas, why don't you bring up good points like how apparently their will be a prison break in this film (remember Batman Begins), apparently their will be a motorcycle ride through the building scene (remember The Dark Knight, apparently their will be a party scene (remember both BB & TDK), and that their will be a new bat vehicle introduced (I'm actually excited for this but still remember TDK).

All it is, is just lazy creativity over poster designs. Other than that, Nolan isn't running out of ideas (but his style is getting tiresome with the whole psycology themes for his movies and overly complex plot lines). Plus, the usage of actors is a common thing for all directors: Tim Burton, Kevin Smith, and Josh Wheaddon does this kind of thing all the time with specific actors, no need for a call to arms.

@TheShadow
Dude, that is what a Nolanite is; someone who defends Nolan, no matter how true or false someone speaks ill about him. As for the posters, they are pretty similar in apperance.
Jefferys

Nolan just hit stardom when he released his first two bats movies. He hasn't got much to fall back on and if he fails then pop his gone. Using the same actors lets to not only achieve success with the General Audience but to also help him to achieve his goal without some fallouts. Hate to be nit picky but look at The Incredible Hulk and the first Iron man, they all had fallouts. Nolan can't reach that, yet.

I defend a good piece of work from bad, and picky judgement. The only similarity between the posters is they have falling rocks, big deal.
