CASTING THE DOC SAVAGE MOVIE

I’ve been working on this fancast for a long time and it goes right along
with the news just recently of a new DOC SAVAGE movie in the works.

DOC SAVAGE, THE MAN OF BRONZE

I’ve always been into the PULP HEROES of bygone days and DOC SAVAGE
and CONAN are my two favorites! I’ve read all the Doc Savage novels
that Lester Dent wrote and the few others written by other writers!
There is just something special about DOC & HIS AMAZING FIVE!

LESTER DENT and his PUBLISHER invented DOC and his AMAZING
BUNCH but LESTER DENT wrote all the wonderful and inventive stories!

Here’s an illustration of how DOC & HIS CREW influenced the
FANTASTIC FOUR.

It’s also very evident how much those two young men who created
a character by the name of CLARK KENT/SUPERMAN “BORROWED”
from the DOC SAVAGE storyline (DOC SAVAGE preceded SUPERMAN):

SUPERMAN, THE MAN OF STEEL…DOC SAVAGE, THE MAN OF
BRONZE.

SUPERMAN’S real name was CLARK Kent…DOC SAVAGE’S full
Name was CLARK Savage Jr.

Both SUPERMAN and DOC had a FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE AT THE
NORTH POLE.

SUPERMAN lives in a thinly disguised NEW YORK CITY,
METROPOLIS…DOC lives on the 64th floor of the EMPIRE STATE
BUILDING in NEW YORK CITY.

SUPERMAN has extraordinary abilities and senses, especially STRENGTH
and HEARING…DOC has extraordinary abilities and senses including
STRENGTH and HEARING.

SUPERMAN has a plucky FEMALE SIDEKICK, LOIS LANE…DOC has
A plucky FEMALE SIDEKICK, his young cousin, PAT SAVAGE.

Yep them boys “BORROWED” heavily!

Now a little about DOC & HIS CREW:

WHO IS DOC SAVAGE?
To the world at large, Doc Savage is a strange, mysterious figure of
glistening bronze skin and golden eyes. To his amazing co-adventurers,
the five greatest brains ever assembled in one group, he is a man of
superhuman strength and protean genius whose life is dedicated to the
destruction of evil-doers. To his fans he is the greatest adventure hero
of all time, whose fantastic exploits are unequaled for hair-raising
thrills, breathtaking escapes and bloodcurdling excitement.

HIS AMAZING CREW—

WILLIAM HARPER "JOHNNY" LITTLEJOHN -- the bespectacled scientist
who was the world's greatest living expert on geology and archaeology.

COLONEL JOHN "RENNY" RENWICK -- the favorite sport of this
engineering genius was pounding his massive fists through heavy paneled doors.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL ANDREW BLODGETT "MONK" MAYFAIR –
only a few inches over 5 feet tall and yet over 260 pounds. His brutish
exterior concealed the mind of a world-renowned chemist.

MAJOR THOMAS J. "LONG TOM" ROBERTS was the physical weakling
of the crowd but a wizard at electricity and radio.

BRIGADIER GENERAL THEODORE MARLEY "HAM" BROOKS -- slender and waspy and the
greatest lawyer Harvard ever produced -- was never without
his ominous, black sword-cane.

PAT SAVAGE is Doc’s cousin from Canada with the same bronze hair and skin
and the same thirst for justice.

With their leader, they would go anywhere, fight anyone, dare everything –
all-the-while seeking excitement and perilous adventure!

They made a first movie back in 1975, DOC SAVAGE, THE MAN OF BRONZE,
Starring RON ELY who starred as Tarzan in his own TV series. It was
not received very well although it wasn't without some charm! But it
just was too campy for my liking! I hope they make the new movie
serious but with the great humor of the books!

I like 'em man, dunno about HARTLEY though, can't see that one but can see McPARTLIN or SEARS for the role!!!

Actually HAMMER looks a spitting image of the old movie actor that played him! ; D

Great cast dude! LC will love you, she loves [frick]ing HARTLEY lol! ; P

Great stuff man, thumbs up from me!

See ya got the SHAZAM dude up there, good one!
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 4:10 AM
Man, you're fast Leee@!

I was tryin' to get back on here to first myself and
you were already here! lol

Thanks very much!

I like Hartley for Doc! I don't see Doc as extremely
old!
According to his bio he was in his mid 30's, just
like Justin!

I just want a seriously done DOC but with the
humor that was in the books, especially the
squabbling and pranks on each other of MONK &
HAM!

I think KANE & DONOVAN can do it cause they do
that with their fellow characters on their
respective shows!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 3/1/2010, 4:29 AM
Yeah, your right, thy could do it man lol!

For those who don't know the character!

Damn i thought the sparkle came from his teeth not his eye lol! ; D
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 5:09 AM
That 1975 movie is not really a good example of
DOC SAVAGE! The novels are serious and violent
action & adventure with some humor thrown in!
That movie is extreme camp at it's worst!

DOC'S teeth don't sparkle. That's just silly!
The story is more hard-boiled in the pulp stories!
Monk & Ham are used for comic relief but they are
not cartoonish characters like in that crappy campy
'75 movie! It's Elliot Ness and Dillinger-
serious but with a little comic relief and sci-fi
thrown in!

Kinda like the real extreme Punisher meets Indiana
Jones!

That '75 movie is kind of a travesty to Doc's image
of the pulp stories! Camp has no place in a seriously
well-done comic book/pulp movie! DOC SAVAGE should be
done like Nolan did THE DARK KNIGHT! Then DOC SAVAGE
would be a great movie!

Leee@ I'm confused about using the links to link
my other fancasts on here. I've studied that site
you gave me in the email but I don't quite
understand what they're saying there!

I guess I'm a little thick where it comes to
using HTML language!

JoshWilding - 3/1/2010, 5:29 AM
Awesome cast dude! :) I'm not that familiar with the character but I am now thanks to your info! Love the entire cast - this would make for an awesome movie!!!

I've just emailed you with how I do links - maybe that will help? I would put it here but it would just turn into a link, lol! Hopefully that wont happen in an email!
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 5:42 AM
Thanks for the email Josh@!
I will try that a little later!
But I think you may have helped
me finally get it through my
thick as a brick head! lol
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 5:46 AM
Josh@ It would make a fantastic
Movie! DOC SAVAGE is like DEPP'S
PUBLIC ENEMIES meets INDIANA JONES!
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 6:47 AM
And bless your DOC SAVAGE-lovin' heart TEA@!
You know it! The pulps rock!
But one thing about the look of the Bama
paperback painted cover look of DOC
with the short-cropped hair and
exaggerated widows peak.

That is how DOC'S hair is described,
in the pulps, like a skull-cap!
But it was really an impact-proof hair-piece
DOC wore on his head as hair. It describes
it several times in the pulp stories
as looking like close-cropped hair!

So Bama got it right and the pulp cover-
artist got it wrong with the longer flowing
locks! DOC wore a hair-like skull-piece
to protect his head like a helmet!
DOC weren't no dummy!!! He had his brainpan
protected! He was the first one with the
buzz-cut look! lol

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 8:48 AM
Yup, DOC had bullet-proof clothing and a bullet proof
skullcap, talk about your helmet hair! lol

But ancient Greeks had long hair, especially the gods!
Most of Doc's sidekicks were out of the military cuz
there was a war on so of course DOC would wear a buzzcut
military-like hairdo and it was a fake to protect his
most important weapon, his brain!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 3/1/2010, 9:16 AM
Cool @ JOSH!!! Hope you work it out @ DDD!! ; )

Hey, im a bit thick when it comes to computers too lol, they really could makes thing a lot more easier i reckon, but heck that goes for most things lol!

Yeah i know the '75 movie ain't a good example but peeps will get what he is a little about lol, hey i rememeber years ago on TV watching it and enjoying it lol, bit of a comedy but good fun! : D

Good Stuff DDD! Definitely learned a whole lot about Doc Savage today.

Teddy Sears has my pick out of the 3 you have.

Love Donovan in Burn Notice. Nice choice.

I think the choices for Doc are ok at best. My best choice for Doc has to be Josh Holloway from Lost. I think he has the height and right look for the part. he might have to bulk up a bit but I think he'd make a great Doc savage.
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 3/1/2010, 2:10 PM
McPartlin is the best. Maggie Grace is a great choice too.
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 4:23 PM
Docdowns@ Josh Holloway is only 6'1" and not thick-
muscled. DOC SAVAGE is listed at 6'8" tall. He's a giant
powerful man. A very tall actor is needed for the part,
someone at least 6'3" and above! Josh just ain't right for
giant ripped DOC!

Justin Hartley is 6'3", Ryan McPartlin is 6'3", and
Teddy Sears is 6'3". I would prefer someone at least
6'4". Teddy fits the part very well though! He just seems
taller on screen!

I thought of Jared Padalecki, 6'4", Alexander Skarsgard,
6'4". But I think Ryan McPartlin looks the tallest of all
of the guys I chose from and probably would fit DOC'S
persona the best! But I like Justin's personality for
DOC. The taller and more ripped the better for the
amazing DOC SAVAGE!
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 4:30 PM
DOGS@ good choice, Ryan would make a great DOC!

Yep, Donovan is great on BURN NOTICE and is
ideal for the slim, debonair Harvard lawyer
HAM!
Docdowns
Docdowns - 3/1/2010, 6:06 PM
Ozymandias, Hartley, Mcpartlin, and Sears might be taller but they look like kids. I don't think any of them have the look of someone able to do the stuff Doc does. Like I said he would have to bulk up but at least he'd look like he was able to do it. Also in movies they can do tricks to disguise the height.

I like the cast dude.

I gotta admit i've never seen or read Doc Savage but from the pictures i think they look good. Doc Savage should be Teddy Sears.

Some of your cast selections seem very good ..... except Doc.

That choice seems a little too young and "pretty boy".

I think a more rugged actor is needed in that role.
DDD
DDD - 3/1/2010, 8:40 PM
Batmanknight@ Of all the candidates I have up there Teddy
has the face of DOC SAVAGE, that doctor or lawyer look!
It's Clark Savage Jr.'s face!

DOC SAVAGE was trained from a child to be extraordinary
and was taught all the sciences, medicine and hand-to-hand
fighting styles and went through vigorous strength
training. He was taught from a very early age so he was
quite young for a doctor. His bio states he was in his
early 30's and still quite young when he began his crime-
fighting career.

Holloway is 41 and a little old for Doc actually! And he's
way too short for 6'8". To me Josh doesn't fit Doc at all!
Teddy Sears does!

Anyl@ Doc is 6'8"!
Damon is a quite short guy.
'Nuff said!
DDD

Damon has the Aura, that's for sure Anyl@!
I get where you're coming from! But DOC has got
to be someone very tall! The taller the better!
Someone my height of 6'6" or taller would be
ideal but there just isn't very many actors
like that in all of acting! And he needs to be
somewhere in his 30's for a trilogy of movies!

I would say Jared Padalecki might be an ideal
candidate for DOC, about 30 and 6'4" tall!
He's really ripped now and not the lanky skinny
kid he used to be!
