I've recently spoke with a friend indirectly associated with the movie industry. She confirmed what I suspected was-is- happening not only on this site, but I assume many others. What's happening, my fellow CBM fans ,is moling. What's moling? Here's the definition: Moling-(verb)slang term used to describe the activity of a person assigned, usually by a corporation, institution or organization to undermine or promote opinions, beliefs or perspectives of a person or group. What's literally happening is that corporations, in this case the movie industry , assign employees to creep web sites that are associated with products of their industry and tasked to quash criticism or negative comments and support and praise positive, complimentary comments. They'll join a site, become a member, and do their job. After the product, such as a released movie for example is no longer in play - that is the movie's been out for 2 weeks or so, they leave the site. If they need to return to the site, they'll change their personal info and assume another identity.
Okay, so what. They're just protecting their investment, right? I can except that perspective;it's not illegal or vile-there are worst things in the world...
but I don't except it.
My perspective is quite different...I'm flattered! "What?! What do you mean?"
Ahhh, fellow fanboys I'm flattered because multi-million dollar companies are demonstrating a fear and respectful recognition of fanboy-dom. The movie industry knows we collectively have the power to make or break a film. Our collective opinions can determine the difference between a movie making millions, many millions or billions. The industry's promotion/advertising dept.ultimately has no sway over our opinions, and thus can't control fanboy society. We don't all agree all the time about everything, but overall if a movie sucks or is good, the majority proves it so.
The fact that an entire industry has to resort to moling just to try and control public opinion regarding their product or service is...flattering!
I see fanboy society as a grass roots movement. We have no designated leader, no formal foundation or headquarters, and no official source of financial income...we're just people who care about comics,sci-fi,video games,Star Wars, animation, etc. and of course movies about them...and we can't be controlled.
Here's some advice Hollywood: Make good CBM's and you'll always have our support.
