What Do You Want to See in Captain America: Results Edition

The results are in on ranking what we want to see for Cap on the big screen.

Source: What Do You Want to See in Captain America?

Last week, I ran a survey to rank the top characteristics of how we want to see Captain America. I asked you to rank them from 1 to 7 with 1 being the most important characteristic you wanted to see in the upcoming film. I'd like to thank those that participated in this. I also used data from Ron's similar editorial: Who Is Captain America?

So, here are the categories with the results in red:

1. ACTING Average rank score: 1.79 Standard deviation: 1.3
No one wants to see a poorly acted movie, no one. How important is this when compared to looks or other Cap characteristics? Do you need to see a top list thespian who will be trading lines with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, etc…? Does a relative rookie who can do a decent enough job fit the bill as long as he nails the overall look?
2. HEIGHT / BUILD Average rank score: 3.90 Standard deviation: 1.7
Marvel lists Captain America at 6’2” and 220 pounds. Most illustrations make him look even larger. As most any comic book character is drawn to the height of physical appearance it will be very difficult to fully look like Cap unless you are a world class athlete or WWE star. Height is crucial too as Cap will be interacting with the likes of Thor and Iron Man in the Avengers movie(s). Most will agree that Hugh Jackman did a terrific job as Wolverine but his 6’4” height was pretty evident.
3. AGE Average rank score: 4.20 Standard deviation: 1.2
This starts out as an origin movie with Steve Rogers just setting out into the adult world and becoming the super soldier. Actors being mentioned for the role are ranging in age from early twenties of some unknowns to as old as 46 (Brad Pitt). How close should the Actor portraying Cap be to his character? Keep in mind if everything goes well, we are looking at a role that could be held for over 10 years in both solo and Avengers movies.
4. HEAD Average rank score: 4.90 Standard deviation: 2.2
Blond hair, blue eyes and a square jaw are some of the key aspects of this beloved comic book icon. Obviously, hair dye and contacts can take care of the first two but you want it to look right or is that not a big of importance when compared with everything else. If the actor has a soft chin, will that stop you dead in your tracks right there.?
5. LEADERSHIP Average rank score: 3.94 Standard deviation: 1.8
Captain America is a leader of men. He has to be someone you are willing to follow into Hell if need be. He also has to be someone that some of the most powerful beings in the world will follow and trust. Where does this rank among our ingredients?
6. NATIONALITY Average rank score: 4.65 Standard deviation: 1.9
I almost didn’t put this in but it is a hot button topic for some. Does Captain America need to be played by an American? Is the role so iconic that no one else will do? Is it a role played by an actor and you want the best person, no matter where they are from, to play him?
7. COSTUME Average rank score: 3.11 Standard deviation: 1.8
This has been another issue thrown around a lot. In regards to this ranking it doesn’t matter which costume is used (WWII, classic or ultimate to name a few). The big question is how important is any costume next to the other categories as far as being on the big screen. My guess is we will see different versions as the movie goes from origin story to present day to Avengers team up. Feel free to state what you want to see most and I will compile that data as well.

So, here is the ranking by order of importance:

1. Acting
2. Costume
3. Height / Build
4. Leadership
5. Age
6. Nationality
7. Head

What does the standard deviation tell us? Well in a nutshell, the bigger the number, the larger of a range of data scores. This means that we were all very similar in ranking Acting as #1 and Age as #5. Not surprisingly, we all want to see Cap well acted. Age is not as large of an issue for the majority of us as well so maybe there is hope for some of the older Actors being tossed around.

It also means that people voted the most differently on Head and Nationality characteristics. Many people that voted Head at 5 to 7 commented about hair dye, contacts or that acting will pull through. Nationality was all over the board as well.

Some voted these were all important or gave top scores to almost all categories. Obviously we want to see all these categories up there but unless we make this a Pixar film that will never happen. Acting blew all other categories out of the water. Costume came in next-we want to see a well translated uniform in this adaptation. The next closest characteristics were Height/Build and Leadership. Based on the scores and comments, we want to see someone fill out the uniform and be able to lead men/superheroes into battle. Hopefully Marvel, Joe Johnston, casting directors, etc... are looking at these characteristics as closely as we are.

Who should wield the shield? Until he is announced, that question will be hotly debated.

Acting is number one easy, then costume, then height/build, then his head. Everything else is secondary to a good Cap movie.

Cap should definitely be played by an American. Good acting as well. The rest could be worked out.

gotta love that acting!

Acting ability is the most important but his looks are very
important as is his heritage. Steve Rogers has always been
drawn one way and only one way when he
takes off the mask! And that's the tall all-American
Caucasian-Anglo-Saxon-Nordic look!

The hair and eyes can be done with make-up but the square
jaw and chiseled features can't! There is NO such thing as
a weak-jawed or round-jawed Captain America. The other Cap
was Isaiah Bradley in the beginning and Winter
Soldier/Bucky in the
present! But the grown-up Bucky has that same jaw
line!

The movie Cap is the Steve Rogers I described who was
the skinny kid in the beginning and transformed into
the super-soldier!

If Steve Rogers was just a character in a written
novel and no one ever saw a rendition of his face
and jaw then anybody could play him! But that is NOT
the case! He has been drawn, for decades now, and
it's always been the same!

I can't even understand why this is even up for debate!
No one would ever want to see a 5'5" blond-haired,
scrawny wimpy Tarzan. Tarzan has always been a tall
dark-haired muscular powerful Lord Greystoke!
DDD
DDD - 2/3/2010, 1:22 AM
Or how about a scrawny Hawaiian pool-boy playing
Conan the Barbarian!

Whoops, that wasn't such a good example! lol My bad!!!!

Or who wants to see James Bond played by an American?
Even if he could do the British accent people in Great
Britain would be up in arms and I mean ARMS!

SOMEBODY GET THE GUNS AND A BLOODY ROPE!!!! LOL

It needs to be an America actor!
Any other character it doesn't matter hooey!
But Cap MUST be an American actor!
This is the only character where it wouldn't
be right for any other nationality!

I don't know why its and if or and thing anyway!
What? Is it a crime that he looks the part as
well as acts the part? Its not a one thing or the
other! It needs to be acting talent "AND" looks!

@Critic my friend I have to say that Sam is only
5'8", scrawney and hopelessly Australian! I'm sorry
but any way you slice it...
..."SAM DON'T CUT IT!!!!"

Cap MUST BE TALL, SQUARE-JAWED & AMERICAN (there's
plenty of actors who look like that)...he must be
AMERICAN SOUNDING too! I won't buy it if he has the
slightest hint of any other accent AT ALL!!!!

I think there's a few other American fans of Cap who
won't buy it either! I think Marvel/Disney would lose money
big time! I personally would start a grass roots boycott &
protest, myself, with anyone who will join me, if they
pick someone like Sam with his Oistroilian Oiccent
for Captain AMERICA!!!!!!!

DOGS @ Nice one man, great article!! ; )

Hey, @Leee! They picked the ULTIMATES FURY so why not the
ULTIMATES for them all! Anybody knows the Ultimates are
the only thing in town and everybody loves them and they're
so popular with the kids and the traditional Avengers are
stupid and old and outmoded!

So let's make 'em all ULTIMATES and throw out decades of
stories and decades of art and bring in them COOL ULTIMATES,
a hippie THOR, a BITTER ANGRY VICIOUS UNFORGIVING CAPTAIN
AMERICA, and throw out that stupid WASP & ANT-MAN!
Man that's the Avengers right there!!!! Yeeehaaawww!

You're ARMIE HAMMER'S starting to grow on me @Leee!

At least he's tall and has a square jaw
and is a real American!

He does look like Steve Rogers!
Heck if he can play Batman he can play
Cap!
DDD
DDD - 2/3/2010, 5:28 AM
Just so no one says there aint no young American actors
who can play Cap/Steve Rogers, here's some more Cap choices!
Add them to Leee@s Armie Hammer up there!

RYAN McPARTLIN 6'3"
CAPTAIN AMERICA-MCPARTLIN 02

CAPTAIN AMERICA-MCPARTLIN 1

JUSTIN HARTLEY 6'3"

TEDDY SEARS 6'3"

DDD
DDD - 2/3/2010, 5:30 AM
So there's no excuse to use a non-American
cuz there's plenty of young American actors
that fit Steve Roger's looks AND acting!
DDD
DDD - 2/3/2010, 8:09 AM
I agree @Anil! Matt Damon could do it and do it well!
FX will do the rest! Pine wouldn't be bad at all and
I've suggested him, myself, before! Everybody shot me down!

Thanks for the feedback guys, especially you DDD, ya big lug!

I would prefer an American actor but its not a deal breaker for me. Your argument with James Bond is a little loose: Sean Connery is from Scotland, George Lazenby is from Australia, Timothy Dalton is from Wales and Pierce Brosnan is from Ireland. That's 4 out of 6 Bonds not from England!

BIGBMH

I think jawline is more important than being really tall. Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Chris Pine don't seem right for the role to me because their jawline doesn't fit. He doesn't need to be that tall really. For one thing, Hugh Jackman was an awesome Wolverine, even though he was much too tall. Thor is supposed to be 6' 6". Hemsworth is 6' 3". If Captain America is supposed to be 6' 2" in the comics, that makes him 4 inches shorter than Thor, a notable difference. A 6' 2" actor would only be 1 inch shorter than Hemsworth. Ironman is 6' 1" while RDJ is 5' 9". Judging the height relative to Thor and Ironman, anywhere from 5' 10" to 6' 1" would do.

i want the entire movie to be in WWII. not a single scene in the present. i want the very last scene to be Cap floating down in the freezing water with some kind of sad dramatic music playing, then fade to credits.

then i want the opening scene of the avengers to be a scene of the same underwater type setting, with some kind of underwater craft (possibly with a SHIELD emblem on it)finding steve's frozen body.

@CDB-Hate to disappoint but beginning and ending scenes will be present day. They've already gone on record to say that.

how about this:
Cap and bucky racing down a runway pier on a motorcycle w/sidecar. Cap grabs Bucky from the sidecar, slinging him onto the drone plane. By doing this, Cap loses most of his momentum, so when he lands you see a front view of him desparately trying to grab onto something as he is sliding down the fuselage, Bucky looks back as Cap screams his name. Ther's a moment of eye contact where the both of them realize that this is, then there's the sudden explosion from the drone plane as seen from down below by the Howling Commandos (who have just rigged the warehouse to explode as well.) No bodies are found, Sad scene of burial/eulogy and music as credits roll. At end of credits, back to explosion w/ Cap waking up on a gurney, screaming Bucky's name.
