Back in January, Fede Alvarez, director of the upcoming EVIL DEAD "remake", said that his film takes place 30 years after THE EVIL DEAD and may ignore the continuity established by EVIL DEAD II and ARMY OF DARKNESS. Now, the reason he gives is that because Sam Raimi reshot parts of THE EVIL DEAD for EVIL DEAD II, but just included Ash and his girlfriend instead of Ash, his girlfriend, and the other friends, he considers EVIL DEAD II a reboot of the series. Now, I respectfully disagree. I think Sam Raimi was just trying to give a rough recap of the first film, and that introducing the other characters and showing their deaths would have taken to much time and slowed the film down. So, until I see the movie, I am going to consider 2013's EVIL DEAD the fourth film in the series. So, with that, I am wondering just what new directions EVIL DEAD will take the series, and where it could go after that film. Alvarez also went on to say that the plot of his film very closely mirrors the plot of the first film. So, I am going to assume that everything happens the way it does in the 1981 film. With that, here are my thoughts on where they should take the franchise:
• EVIL DEAD: BOOK OF THE DEAD: Now, there are two options for the ending of the film. This title applies to both. OPTION 1: Somebody survives at the end. OPTION 2: Nobody survives at the end.
OPTION 1: One of the group has survived the horrific night and fought the evil dead, or Deadites. They escape, but they know that the Evil Force is still out there, and that if it is not stopped, then it could escape out of the woods and enter the world. So, they hear about this grizzled, older ghost hunter named Ash. Everyone thinks he is crazy, but they know better. So the survivor and Ash travel back to the cabin and attempt to to stop the Deadites, once and for all, using the power of the Book of the Dead to send them back.
OPTION 2: The night is over, and no one has survived the wrath of the Deadites. After no one hears from the group for weeks, they go to the cabin, and discover the slaughtered group. It becomes a national headline, people assume a serial killer is responsible. But after a group of police officers searching for the killer dissappears into the woods, Ash realizes that the Evil Force has returned. So, he heads to the cabin and plans to use the Book of the Dead to kill the Deadites, once and for all.
Now, I would love to see both of these options as films, and they could lead to more sequels. However, I would also like to see a prequel about the professor and his decoding of the Book of the Dead, and the Deadites being unleashed for the first time. This could also give more backstory to the Evil Force.
What do you guys think of the upcoming remake? Do you want it to continue the series, or reboot it? Leave a comment below, and let me know!
