Why I Believe BATMAN VS SUPERMAN Was Pushed Back

While I'm still in a state of shock, like many of you, here's what I think WB is actually planning and why it means BvS had to be delayed.

While Batman vs Superman being pushed into May of 2016 is incredibly disappointing for any fan, I have a feeling there may be a very good reason why they pushed it back.

Lets look at five recent pieces of information:

1. Chris Terrio brought on to “rewrite/polish” the script
2. Batman vs Superman and Justice League rumored to shoot back-to-back
3. The Rock confirms project with DC + other casting rumors for DC heroes emerge
4. “filmmakers time to realize fully their vision”
5. Batman vs Superman still begins shooting relatively early in 2014 (2nd quarter = April)

Now to me, by strictly connecting the dots, I believe that Chris Terrio was brought on board to do a rewrite on the script while David S. Goyer begins prepping a Justice League script. The extra time is needed in order to prepare two movies to be shot back-to-back and thus create “time to realize fully their vision.” And Batman vs Superman still begins filming relatively soon (2nd quarter according to the press release, or 6 weeks from the initial start date according to Batman-News.com). This says that there aren’t really problems with the production on Batman vs Superman but in order to film 2 movies back-to-back they need to get other things in order, and extra planning is required - including how a BvS will lead directly into a JL film (as is rumored) and more importantly: casting the other JL members before their respective schedules fill up.

Of course this is all purely my speculation as we don’t know all the details. The point is, Batman vs Superman is still starting to film soon, we’re still going to get looks at the characters in costume soon, and (hopefully) WB will let us all know what exactly they are planning.

Yes, I think that's why they did it, to film BvS then JL back to back. I pray to the lord in heaven that this will be the last long wait and WB/DC will finally start releasing more movies, I'd be fine with one every year at least.

Great news. Hopefully the justice league movie will also be filming in Detroit

Yup just my own opinion and speculation, trying to connect some of the recent development and rumours.

I hope this isn't Justice League: Mortal all over again...

@MoonDoggyX Doubt it, the movie still starts filming soon, they've got a cast and a script. WB has too much riding on this to give up on, plus there really isn't a reason to give up on it.

Other possibility-they have decided, or had always planned, for this to actually be a Justice League film, and need extra time to change up the script and cast the other JL members.

If that's the case then WB is just looking to cash out with BvS, and then again quickly with JL.
That would mean that there's no interconnected Cinematic Universe. Just a series of team movies, like x-men.
Cool that we'd get JL sooner, but that would mean no solo flicks until after JL, so in 2018 or so. That's like a whole another World Cup from now.

Essentially ...I think WB is going to pull a Homer. They have just been throwing so many ideas on while not having a clue as to what they are even doing ...and sometimes that way of creating works. Now it seems like after throwing evert cannister of paint without any reason or pattern but just want for Avengers money, they ran out paint and have no choice but to take a step back and look at the mess they made. But I think while looking in that mess of ideas, they can ALMOST make out a masterpiece ...they just need to get rid or arrange it to work around the masterpiece they created by accident but are now trying to recover. So yes, I Think your assesment is dead on. And to D C'S credit I think they have ALWAYS considered Marvel hasn't: oversaturation. The odds of Marvel shooting themselves in the foot are quite good because of their volume. I think they know that them putting out their own solo films leading up to JLA is bad for two reasons: firstly they don't have them to build that marvel did because this fad will not last forever ...and seeing that its gone on for about five years it doesn't have a lot of time left. Secondly, while they want to replicate marvels sucess they don't want to replicate their format completely because they don't want to come off as completely ripping off marvel. If they want shared universe they need to make it feel different from MCU. Having us be introduced to the DCCU in the eyes of Kent is a good way to do this in this trilogy of films that focus on him. And from there they might consider solo films but before they do that they neeed to get JLA money, in case the fad dies soon. They are using their heads now.

Batman vs Superman was originally set to shoot in 2003. Just over 10 years later and they push back filming AGAIN! I have absolutely NO faith in Warner Brothers.

Like I've said before, they simply just weren't (fully) prepared. This isn't me saying that WB is a bad studio, but I now can believe those reports back in June or July that said WB forced Batman into the original Superman-centered sequel's script.

@MrBlackJack Yup, agree with your points. All signs, imo, point to back to back filming as a one month delay doesn't say to me that there are major problems with BvS they just need the extra time to prep 2 films

Back to back filming? This may allow a film every year after 2016.....this is what they need to fill the Gaps left from Harry Potter and The Hobbit.

The news is just sunk in now......kind of.

My theory is the original people working on this are you way over their heads. Not the actors mind you but primarily to me the original writers. Snyder seems to do better when he is just directing or producing. Goyer I believe understands the comic book canon, I just don't believe he's that good of a writer. His strength probably is more in the area of consulting or collaborating. Whenever the issues I hope they constrain them out. CBM's will be that much better if the DC brand can at least be viable. Competition is good for everyone.

I hope this means we'll finally get a JL film right after BvS. WB would be stupid not to do BvS first. That entire movie should be a build up for JL and establish a relationship between Batman and Superman that will go into the JL film. Not only that, but have Superman grow as a superhero. Jumping right into a JL film would be a rush. And Snyder has to direct JL as well just for consistency and tone.

I'm not upset about the delay of Batman vs Superman. Great article.
Good speculation.
I'm glad that the writer's and the director are now taking there time on this film. I mean over all i think people would rather a good film than a film that is rushed which turns out to be bad.
