FANTASTIC FOUR Director Matt Shakman Dismisses Recent Casting Claims As Little More Than "Rumors"

Despite the fact rumours are swirling about who will play certain members of Marvel's First Family in Fantastic Four, director Matt Shakman has now made it clear that nothing is official quite yet...

After Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced John Krasinski as a Reed Richards Variant, many of us were convinced that The Office alum would go on to play the hero in Fantastic Four. It's since become clear that's unlikely to be the case, and everyone from Adam Driver to Dev Patel and Ryan Gosling have since been linked to the role.

A few names for Invisible Woman have also done the rounds, though even Twitter's thirstiest scoopers haven't dropped any intel on The Thing and the Human Torch.

Crucially, none of the names we've been hearing came from the Hollywood trades, and during a recent interview with Collider, Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman was quick to temper expectations.

Confirming that shooting begins "early next year," he added: "All the casting stuff you see is just rumours. We are early in our process there. We have nothing to announce right now, and certainly, when we do we’ll let you know."

ComicBook.com asked Shakman a similar question, and he elaborated on what it's been like to see so many different names do the rounds online. "There are a lot out there, man. They really are. It's pretty crazy. As I learned from WandaVision, too, it is so lovely to see the level of engagement that fans have with this material, because I'm a fan too, and I have been reading Fantastic Four since I was a kid."

"I love these characters. I love the chance that we have to bring them to the MCU and I really want to get it right and I know that everybody out there is really excited and feels passionate in the same way wanting to get it right," he continued. "And so I encourage it. I think it's great. But yeah, I have no early answers for anyone today about casting."

We shouldn't be surprised by how vague the filmmaker is being as Marvel Studios will reveal the team's roster when they're good and ready (we're guessing Comic-Con or D23 over the summer). While they're bound to be in talks with actors at this stage, there's still a long time to go before cameras start rolling so common sense says no contracts have been signed...yet.

Fantastic Four will be released in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Yay! The recent casting rumors and "fan" casting is just stupid. Go with unknowns, same with X-Men

Josh reporting this with zero self awareness, since he's been reporting those rumors as news before 🙄

@Origame - Now, to be fair, Josh usually includes some line to the effect of "take this rumor with a pinch of salt..."

That's absolutely right Josh, these unsubstantiated rumors are making readers a bit salty.

@Origame - we probably wouldn't get enough comic book movie news if it wasn't for those rumours.

Damn, the latest one I saw was Dev Patel for Mr. Fantastic. Cold piece of work if Shakman saw that one and said enough is enough! lol

Just please cast actors and actresses that look like the characters, that’s all I ask.

I'm curious to see if the director actually has the balls to cast the F4 exactly/close to how they resemble in the comics..... I hope he does.

@Cyclonus @Spike101 - I think you should prepare for the very likely possibility of the team being mixed. Atleast you won't be dissappointed then

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, I have a feeling that Reed's gonna be Asian or Indian, Sue and Johnny are gonna be white, and Ben will be black.

@FilmGuy7878 - kinda hope they make Doom Indian, seeing how the Romani people have their origin on the Indian subcontinent.

As for the rest, I care about it as much as the clothes they wear. So, zero. I really don't care about looks being comic accurate.

Yeah, we'll know when they want us to know. My guess is at SDCC or D23

I remember when Wizard magazine used to do fan casting for movies that had zero shot of ever being made. Those were the days...

I'm honestly getting even more hope for this film now. Shakman sounds like he's really the man for the job. Just for the love of god, cast the four right. Get actors who embody the characters and not just have big names for the sake of having big names, I honestly don't care if they race bend any of the four just get good actors.

i am exactly tired of the million casting rumors that are out there. feige is not like gunn and is radio silent outside of project releases. gunn would be shooting each false casting down daily. the movie is so far away and the rumors are just so full of shit right now.

I'd be cool with Krasinski if they made him a little less shlubby-looking and introduced him as a more obsessive scientist type.

Outside of that, I'll be honest, I haven't heard any rumors of anyone for Reed that I thought would do the character justice. Of course, I'm basing this on what I imagine Reed like from my favorite comic runs, so who knows what they'll end up doing.

I think the rest of the F4 are pretty easy to cast. But Reed and Doom are two of the most difficult characters to get right, imo.

Of all the more prominent Marvel characters, I'd say Reed, Doctor Strange, Wanda, and T'Challa are the ones only a handful of actors could get right. And I've been pretty happy with the MCU takes on the latter three, so I'm sure Marvel won't disappoint. But some of these actors I'm hearing...

I mean, Adam Driver? Come on. You need someone like reanimator-era Jeffrey Combs.
Dredd97
Dredd97 - 2/8/2023, 10:53 AM
@SheepishOne - Jeffrey Combs is the perfect type to cast to. I've always thought 90s era James Spader wouldve made a good Reed too. he's gotta be a weird freak
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 2/8/2023, 1:45 PM
@Dredd97 - Oh yea, a young Spader wouldn't be a bad choice at all.

The fact Dev Pattel as Reed was only just a rumor and how many people were onboard with that still blows my mind. Woke culture is really spreading like the cordyceps virus.
Matchesz
Matchesz - 2/8/2023, 11:00 AM
@Matchesz - the fantastic four has always been portrayed as white people, the only reason why they would change that is cuz MCU is far left leaning and politically charged that they’ll cast an indian guy just to troll their own fans. She Hulk was proof what they’re capable of and what they think of their own fans .
Matchesz
Matchesz - 2/8/2023, 11:10 AM
Politics is whats ruining entertainment I wish they’d be called out for it more. But anyways, Glen Howerton.
