Ror Revisits: Fantastic Four

It occurred to me that I had only been revisiting the movies I knew I either liked or half liked. It's about time I dove into the crap stuff! Is "FF" as bad as we remember? Click to get my take.

Review Opinion

I'll be away for the week so I figured I'd get this week’s revisit out early. I'm not gonna lie, it took a bit of effort for me to sit down and stick this bastard in the player! But I had beer and the company of someone who actually liked the film(apparently there are 3 of them) so I could listen to another opinion on certain scenes.

Anyway, what’s the verdict, did I change my outlook? Well, actually...no! I still think it’s a useless movie. The thing is I was probably always going to. This film is bad (bad acting, bad script, etc.). Even if all of those things were of a higher quality, I'm not sure how much I would actually enjoy any film based on these characters. I just don't like The FF. That said, they certainly deserve better than this, and one character I do like (the villain, DR Doom) gets the worst treatment of all.

The film sticks true to the origins of Marvel's first family for the most part. It’s still a space adventure gone wrong that changes them. But along for the ride is Victor Von Doom, who gains his powers and eeeeevil disposition in the same way as the four. Of course, they decide to use their new found abilities for good, and old Victor does not. What follows is your basic coming to terms with new powers and responsibilities tale with a love triangle between Doom, Reed, and Sue thrown in, and a big final showdown. Both the biggest flaw and the biggest highlight of this is the casting. On the plus side Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis are pretty good as The Human Torch and The Thing, even though The Thing looks a bit silly in his lipless rubber suit. They do their best with what they have to work with and definitely stay true to the source characters. Then we have Jessica Alba and Joha..Jya..Rhy(sorry I should really look that up!)...the Griffiths dude. Totally miscast as the "smart" scientist couple. He's meh, with the script doing him no favors; she's just plain bad no matter how you look at it, delivering her lines with all the conviction of a wardrobe. But then, oh then we have the worst casualty of all of this. Dr Doom, one of the greatest comic book villains of all time is played by a [frick]ing abysmal Julian McMahon. He tries to play him smarmy, slimy, and scheming (a mistake in the first place). Instead comes across whiny, wimpy, and annoying. With an occasional slip into an English accent, so we know he's reeeeally bad now! Arse. The aforementioned script is also eye-rollingly bad, with no one ever saying anything worth listening to for the entirety of the film aside from a bit of humor that occasionally hits the mark between Evans and Chiklis. The action scenes are handled well enough, with half decent special effects (although Mr. Fantastic's stretchy scenes don't hold up well at all). I actually like the bridge scene when they reveal their powers and save people, becoming a team for the first time. Sure it’s cheesy and kiddie, but no FF movie was ever going to be dark. That’s not the problem with this one. Though, they could have toned it down a tad.

This film spawned a slightly better sequel featuring The Silver Surfer. There is a reboot on the way, titled(for now) Fantastic Four Reborn. As I said before, I'm not a fan of the characters so I'm not sure I really care, but for those that are big fans, I really hope they take it just a bit more seriously and spend a bit more time on the casting couch. As I watched this, stopping occasionally to throw something at the tv, I was accused by my less grouchy companion of taking it too seriously , and that I should lighten up--it’s a kids movie after all. In one way that’s a fair point. The film could well be enjoyed by some kids, on the other hand, BALLS! My niece and nephew hate it too. There are plenty of GOOD kids’ movies. I may rethink my plans to watch Punisher :Warzone next week, I may break the damn TV.

The first Fantastic Four movie was alright. Reed Richards was boring, I didn't like the Invisible Woman, Human Torch was not very good, perhaps the Thing was the best.

I liked this Fantastic Four movie more.

Lee, if by heart you mean stinking offal, I agree! Wolverine was a lot more enjoyable than that tripe.

Destroyer14 @ You've got to be [frick]ing kidding me dude LMFAO!!!! : D

THING & TORCH were pretty much perfect from page to screen but DR DOOM sucked nearly as bad as BARACKAPOOL!!!

Oh yeah...

: P

P.S. WOLVERINE was beyond TRIPE, just a sell-out movie! ; D

@LEEE777 The old one was more faithful to the comics. Doom was cooler too.

I'v still never watched that old FF movie! can't be as bad as Dr Strange.

Lee, I am! But maybe not next, its a fairly recent one. maybe I'll watch the Tom Jane one first, I kinda like that one anyway.

I hate the FF movies. Literally, Chiklis and Evans are the ONLY good things about them! Well, Silver Surfer was cool, but that's it. Doom was an atrocity. WORSE than Barakapool.

People always say that Evans and Chiklis are the only ones cast right, but I disagree. I never liked Chiklis, and I found Gruffudd to have allot of potential as Mr. Fantastic(it was the script that was terrible). But I agree with Evans, he was great, Alba still was not. And I also am not a fan of the main 4 characters, but some other characters that are closely associated with the 44(such as Namor, Surfer, and Doom), are really some of my favorite Marvel characters. So I'm looking forward to the reboot, because I want to see someone do those characters some justice(although Surfer was done well in the movie, despite them screwing up his powers, but it's hard to complain about something like that when you see everything else they f-up, especially Galatus!!! Gahhhh!!! Pisses me off soooooo bad!!!!! One of my favorite villains!!! F**k you Fox!!!!!!! Ok, ok, rant over)

Fantastic Four has always been campy. Fox could have done way better with the 2 films. I checked out when they reduced Galactus to a cloud. Hopefully Bay will bring in Unicron in TF3 and do it right, or as right as he gets things. Just no testicles on a planet sized robot please. The Tom Jane Punisher was not a bad flick at all. That was filmed down in my neck of the woods anyways. Never watched Warzone as it looked really bad.

Fantastic 4 I somewhat enjoyed. Its not a movie I absolutely LOVED, but if its on I will probably watch it or if im just bored and wants to pop it into the DVD player. Human Torch and Thing were dead on, but not so much for the rest. And the Final Fight scene with the Fantastic 4 vs Doom was just horrible!!! Way too quick

Also Rise of the Silver Surfer, I somewhat enjoy mainly because of the SS and Dr. Doom. The whole Doom on SS board thing was done badly, but it was cool to watch. Also of course i somewhat liked it because of HT and Thing again.

BUT GALACTUS WAS CRAP! I DONT CARE WHAT THEY SAY!!

great review Ror

I hated this movie when it came out, but, now that I have a three year old that likes comics, I'm thinking about popping it in the old player for her. I don't know if that's a compliment or not. Actually, knowing that the 90's F4 film was made by Corman, it's not that bad at all. The F4 is best when used as support characters and when Reed is screwing up. (Shooting Hulk into space creating a Bill Foster killing Thor clone.) To think about it, Reed is a better bad guy than good.

@Upupandaway-100% agreement with you. After watching the first (i know I am opening up some dynamite with this comment) X-men, I figured this was going to be a pile of crap too. Sorry just greatly dissapointed with some of the stuff that came out a few years ago. Knowing these studios have the money and the talent tobring a lot better movies.

I don't care what anyone says, I enjoyed this movie. It was FUN! Something that way too many movies these days are missing. Now we gotta be dark, and gritty, and "realistic." Balls. I'll take something like this over most of the more "realistic" garbage any day. And I don't care if it isn't 100% faithful to the comics. I'm not that nit-picky. I'll just enjoy the movie for what it IS, instead of bitch about what it isn't. But hey - that's just me.
BryEL
BryEL - 7/5/2010, 6:18 PM
This wasn't THAT bad of a movie. Yes, Alba blew, yes, Doom was a travesty, but all in all it was: okay.

Elektra is a FAR WORSE film.

@Ror - please don't review Warzone! I actually like it and I know your review will get people hatin' on it again!

Sorry Bryel, haha, its a comin!

Angrytroll, cool man, if you liked it you liked it. Personally my idea of fun is to watch a good movie, but hey, thats just me:) A movie can still be well made and tell a half decent story without being dark, gritty or realistic. For God's sake, Pixar have been doing it for years haven't they?

I thought Thing, Doom, and Torch(Respectively)were the best actors. The second one wasn't all that great but it was okay. I hope they follow the Ultimate Universe. I decided to start reading the Ultimate FF and I really like it. I just finished the 3rd one and its getting better already.

@theangrytroll and radhatter:
Please let me in on what it is that you guys are smoking because I'd love to be THAT stoned! The FF does not need to be "gritty" or "realistic" and yes, it should be fun, but that does not mean it's okay for it to be a fly ridden heap of bantha shit! As soon as I heard that Tim "Barbershop" Story was in the director's chair I knew we were doomed. Pun intended. My main gripe about the casting of this film was that Reed, Sue, and Victor were far too young. I honestly think Tom Hanks would be fantastic, pun intended again, as Reed. Failing that George Clooney has the chops, and hair, to pull off Marvel's smartest man. Give Dr. Doom to Daniel Day Lewis or Ralph Finnes. Charlize Theron would make a perfect Sue Storm. As for Johnny, well we lost the best part of the original films to Cap but I think Leonardo DiCaprio would do great with the charisma of Johnny Storm and brings a nice set of acting chops to the table too. As for The Thing, I think some well done cgi mo-cap would look a LOT better than crappy styrafoam make up. But for voice and pre-cosmic ray exposure I think Bruce Willis would nail the character of the ever loving blue eyed thing. Like I said the cast needs to be OLDER...Chris Evans was good but am I the only one who didn't buy the fact that a 25 year old was old enough to be an ace fighter pilot? This film needs to match the adjective in the title in all ways: FANTASTIC! What director could pull all this together? STEVEN EFFING SPEILBERG! The guy is a HUGE FF fan and has the chops to get this film done the right way. Now this is all fan-gasm inducing pipe dreams but I'm just throwing it out there. No offense to theangrytroll and radhatter. Discuss.

Hey folks, just curious. Are they (Fox and Sony) just doing these reboots to keep the rights or are they seriously going to try to put out some quality movies, even if they arent geared toward us die hard fans, Please Fox and Sony make good movies, not do something just to piss off Disney and Marvel.

@Superzero-I thought Bruce Willis would have kicked some massive arse as The Thing too.

xAPEXTHEORYx - 7/5/2010, 7:18 PM
somebody needs to do something for this movies, both the first and second films pissed me off. come on brad bird did a hell of a good job with the incredibles, maybe we should give him a chance to write the fantastic four script. oh and maybe, just maybe the film will be way better if jessica alba was not in the film, she i to young and not a natural blond, by the way the invisible women has to look like a very attractive women or a MILF. the film can't be only a comedy, hey i love chris evan. he is going to be captain america, but if he i going to pull that comedy in captain america then he isn't really captain america, he has to be a leader not a joke, sure he can make jokes, but when the entire avengers are together, are we going to have tony and captain american making jokes, that would be stupid. directors and writers need to focus on the character, not on the special effects, get a good writer(Brad Bird) and then your actors.

"fly ridden heap of bantha shit!"
ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Ror:
Revisiting Fox's shit? You go THAT low? LOL! Don't do Warzone next, man! Do Wolverine! I'd love to read that and I'd love to read what people would comment on that! LOL!!!

And, since you brought this up... "For God's sake, Pixar have been doing it for years haven't they?" ...hope you don't mind my little ranting here:

What the FRICK were they thinking? Toy Story 3 is - to quote Superzero - "a fly ridden heap of bantha shit!"

How come it got explosive BO? Who watch this CRAP? I guess I was too lazy to find previews (or blindly trusted Pixar from previous records) before taking my 3 year old daughter to see this horrifying prison thriller movie! And I regret it ever since!

It's scary, it's dark 80% of the time and it's not funny at all! And we watched it in 3D! FRICK Pixar! Toy Story 3 is not for children! If it was intended for adults, go live action! At least we'd see real boobs and blood to go along with the scary scenes and score! And I definitely wouldn't bring my 3 year old along!

FRICK!

Well... sorry, I just need to get that out of my chest. But at least we know now that Pixar turned out to go that route as well, go dark and gritty, regardless of who their intended targets are.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 7/5/2010, 9:01 PM
This movie was Balls, and saying that it's a kids movie does not give it a pass. There are plenty of very good kids movies out there, Toy Story 3 being one of them, FF just was not good.

Ror, I was never a big fan of the Fantastic Four either, I appreciate them being part of the greater Marvel Universe, and they have a few decent villains (all of whom were disgraced in the two feature films,) but on their own, they are kind of boring. I'll check out the reboot, and I think that there could be something decent in them if done with some care.
