Quite some time ago, Bryan Singer was hired by Millennium Films to direct a live-action reboot of
Red Sonja. However, the news came hot on the heels of him being replaced as
Bohemian Rhapsody's director and multiple allegations of rape and sexual abuse of underage boys. Needless to say, Singer being paid $10 million to take charge of that movie didn't sit well with anyone.
While Millennium Films boss Avi Lerner initially stood by the filmmaker, a sizeable backlash to his defence of Singer led to the project being put on hold and the trades were quick to point out that it would be difficult to find anyone willing to star in the movie.
Now, a new article by
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Lerner has been forced to drop Singer from the movie because he was unable to secure a domestic distributor, something which obviously would have killed
Red Sonja's chances of box office success in North America (a digital/online release clearly wasn't something he was willing to consider).
It seems highly likely that a female director will be found to replace Singer, and we can probably forget about seeing the
X-Men helmer work on anything until he's able to clear his name.
