“
I love how bizarre it is, I’ve been saying it’s Training Day — a gritty LA cop drama, the darkness and handheld grittiness — meets Lord of the Rings. There’s orcs and fairies and elves, mean-ass elves.
David Ayer's next film,
Bright, is a considerable departure from anything he's done before as he mixes the reality of street-level L.A. cops with a mystical world of fantasy.
2x Academy Award-nominee
Will Smith stars as Scott Ward, a human cop, who has been assigned Nick Jakoby, played by
Joel Edgerton, - the first orc cop in history - as his partner, which isn't exactly a smooth transition as in the world of Bright, orcs are widely discriminated against. Smith went on to explain Ward's state-of-mind: "
I’m getting ridiculed by other members of the police force, In their interpretation, I’m giving him a fair shot, and I should really just be trying to get him off of the force." While Ward has his own issues with the partnership, Edgerton's Jakoby has a different struggle to overcome: "
I am the first orc, under a diversity program, to be allowed into the police force. I’m under investigation already for an incident that involved an orc who should have been apprehended but managed to escape. The feeling is that I looked after my own kind first and neglected to do my job as a result.”
As for the film's plot,
Entertainment Weekly was also able to learn that it'll essentially follow the odd couple, in this world where the use of magic is illegal, as they answer a seemingly simple call that quickly spirals way out of control and leads the duo to "
a discovery of a magical relic, an artifact of the Dark Lord’s war against humanity.” There isn't much more, but Edgerton does tease that the case will push them to their limits and take them on quite the emotional journey: "
It’s the forming of a trust relationship between us, I think we are hopefully on our way to becoming friends.”
