"You were a hero round these parts. That’s what they call you when you kill so many people the word murderer falls short."

A big-screen adaptation of Joe Abercrombie's best-selling fantasy novel Best Served Cold is in development, and Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible, Dune) is in final talks to play the lead role.

The movie will be helmed by Deadpool director Tim Miller for Skydance.

Originally published as part of Abercrombie’s First Law World series in the summer of 2009, Best Served Cold tells the story of the legendary mercenary Monza Murcatto (Ferguson), the betrayal that ostracizes her, and her ensuing quest for revenge that will forever change a nation.

Abercrombie penned the script, and producers will include Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, Aaron Ryder, Miller for Blur Studios, and Abercrombie. Aimee Rivera will also oversee the project for Skydance.

No production start or release dates have been announced.

Check out a synopsis for the book below, and let us know if you've read Best Served Cold in the comments.

"Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, and behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king. War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular -- a shade too popular for her employer's taste. Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance.

Whatever the cost, seven men must die. Her allies include Styria's least reliable drunkard, Styria's most treacherous poisoner, a mass-murderer obsessed with numbers and a Northman who just wants to do the right thing. Her enemies number the better half of the nation. And that's all before the most dangerous man in the world is dispatched to hunt her down and finish the job Duke Orso started"

Hell yes! First Law is one of the best fantasy series out there and Best Served Cold is fantastic. Bring it on! Would love if this leads to an adaptation of the full series.

@MrDandy - I think you and I have similar fantasy tastes. The First Law series is one of the best. I hope this leads to the whole series being adapted.

Whoa I didn't know Joe Abercrombie was getting movie adaptations.

I did hear about the possible Sanderson adaptations, I would love those to become reality.

@TheManWithoutFear - I bet we hear about it soon. My guess is Mistborn. A series would be good, but I think it could actually be done well enough as feature length movies.

Now when they eventually get to Stormlight Archive, that will be tough. It almost seems like an animated show would be the only way to do it.

@mountainman - mistborn is a good one because it's complete. Well unless you count the ongoing Wax and Wayne stuff. It can finish as a story and if it's successful then there are plenty of Cosmere opportunities.

@TheManWithoutFear - Wax and Wayne wrapped up with the 4th book that came out last year. But I know he will be doing 2 more eras. That shouldn’t be a problem since they would all mostly have new actors and be disconnected from each other. I’d say you could do OG Mistborn and not even worry about Wax and Wayne until it’s completely done.

@mountainman - damn i didn't even know the 4th book was out, let alone that it's the final one. I'll have to go get it.

@TheManWithoutFear - I know I’m in the minority, but in many ways I like W&W more than the first Mistborn trilogy.

One big reason is because it’s the most lived in fantasy series ever. Being able to be in a world where the gods and famous historical figures referenced are ones you “knew when they were young” is such a unique and cool thing. Seeing stuff you experienced in the first trilogy being mythicized, and having streets, cities, and religions named after the OG characters is so cool.

The Western steampunk motif is really fun.

And I personally liked that it was literally a straight western, then got bigger over time. The 3rd and especially The Lost Metal (the 4th) make it so big and connected to other parts of the Cosmere.

I love how the magic system evolved between the passage of time between eras.

Last, I freaking love Wayne. And the final book seals the deal, he’s one of my favorite Sanderson characters. No Kaladin or Dalinar, but he’s either #3 or close after in all of Sanderson’s works. I love Wayne’s humor, i love his dark and interesting past, and I love that he’s a truly great guy underneath his pretty skeezy and offensive exterior personality.

The first trilogy is great. and W&W couldn’t exist without it. But I find that the amazing magic system is my favorite part and, besides a couple of interesting twists and revelations, it really doesn’t stand out vs other series. Sazed and TenSoon are both my boys though, and Kelsier is bad ass and impactful in ways only he can be.

The First Law is great, but super depressing. I haven't read this book yet because book 3 of the trilogy left me feeling hollow 😅

@Polaris - It’s tough to be darker than Game of Thrones, but Abercrombie did it. I love the series but I get that it is heavy and dark.

@mountainman - Yeah, like in GoT the world is cruel and the characters suffer but there's still hope and goodness sometimes, while TFL is just bleak, there's no good and if there is, it doesn't last. It's nihilistic.

@Polaris - I really enjoyed the series. I also really enjoy lighter stuff. There are benefits to both. Glokta is probably one of my favorite characters in all of fiction.

@mountainman - I enjoyed it too, it's very well written, it wouldn't have affected me if I wasn't into it. I'll the other books at some point for sure. Glokta was great, but my fave was Logen, and I have a soft spot for Jezal, poor sweet egocentric idiot that he was.

@Polaris - I find that I need to alternate between heavy stuff and lighter stuff. My palate cleanser series that I am reading in between larger more intense fantasy books is The Dresden Files. It’s more Buffy or Supernatural than Game of Thrones or Wheel of Time. Balance is key.

@mountainman - Never heard of it before, but the sinopsis sounds cool.

True that.

@Polaris - Its a long series (17 and counting) but the books read much faster than most other fantasy. And it quite literally starts off as detective noir with light fantasy elements and eventually becomes incredibly detailed and epic. The world keeps growing and it’s crazy how good the author is as both planting seeds and building the cast of characters from a single POV narrator.

And how could you not like something that features various factions of wizards, warlocks, demons, fairies, spirits, demons, fallen angels, gods from mythology, necromancers, knights of God, and many other creatures from myth and legend?

@Polaris - Just keep in mind, like a lot of things, it really doesn’t hit its stride for a few books. The first three are fairly basic. And the main character is a 20ish year old guy at the beginning. It’s first person so some people find him a bit skeezy at the start. He’s a single dude in his 20’s so it makes sense to me. Starts really getting big and epic after not too long though.

Ferguson is excellent. She is very elegant, and everything she does just sends my skivvies up in flames.

I hope this does well, I feel like Tim Miller is super underrated as a director but has gotten the short end of the stick the last couple of years what with being replaced as the director of Deadpool 2 and then have those creative differences with James Cameron which ended with Terminator: Dark Fate being the way that it was.
