Smaug - Unleashing the Dragon
Come face to face with Smaug the Magnificent, the most realistic, breathtaking and destructive dragon ever to appear on screen, in this gallery of exclusive images that tell the story of how he was created.

Smaug is possibly the most memorable character in JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit: a huge, malevolent, fire-breathing, talking dragon! But while he makes quite an impact in the book, in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation he is definitely the most spectacular creature ever to appear on screen.

So how did the filmmakers manage to take the dragon that has lived in millions of readers’ imaginations and turn him into a totally unique and unforgettable living, breathing character?

The answer can be found in Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon. Packed with stunning, exclusive new images, it reveals how he grew out of thousands of detailed and fantastical concept designs into the beast that is unleashed in awesome digital glory.

Compiled by the Academy Award™-winning teams at Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, who provide fascinating insights telling the story of the dragon’s creation, this is the perfect companion for every fan who was blown away by Smaug, the Magnificent!

Film design was the best, but these are much better than a lot of the concept art.

I loved the design in the film alot more than anything we have seen in concept, however I would have liked to see Smaug have 4 legs rather than two legs and two wings.

I prefer the look they went with.

Looks more like the Nidhogg. A corpse eating dragon who lives at the roots of Yggdrasil.

All of those are badass, but the real question is, would he still have been a wyvern?

Smaug was an actual dragon in the brief glimpses we had of him in the 1st film, then they inexplicably changed him to a wyvern for Desolation. I feel like that says something about the quality of these films, but I'm too tired to be snarky at the moment.

@ScabbyJ - True. Smaug was much more Wyvern than Dragon.

Remember the 1977 animated Smaug? Very cat-like with BOTH Wyvern and Dragon limbs...

Some of these I've seen on this site already, but I will never get tired of seeing concept art and illustrations from these movies. They have some very talented people. Think the design they went with is the best, but there's no denying these look cool.

The concept art looks amazing. Most of them look similar to the designs of the Skyrim dragons and some look similar to a dinosaur design. All these designs are brilliant.

To be fair, the Tolkiens hated the original LotR movies as well haha. I can only imagine how much they regret giving up the rights to The Hobbit now too.

While Smaugs design was awesome in the Desolation of Smaug, I wished that they didn't change him into a 'bat' dragon. Should have had made him a six limbed dragon instead of that 'weak', IMO, 4 limbed dragon. Probably could have had made him a bit bigger and menacing.

I was actually more impressed with the Dragon in Maleficent for all the screen time it had, it was far more convincing and potent.
