Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Lets face it.

Raimi's stuff comes across as very cheesy. I remember thinking Darkman and Army of Darkness were two of the greatest movies I've ever seen when I was 10-12 years old. Looking back at them I realize how overdone they really were.

i liked both movies this is Raimi he can do what he want and you know what it totally worked in OZ and that 10 second bruce campbell cameo -_-

Holy shit. I really liked Oz. Some of the stuff Raimi couldn't help, though. Like the transported thru a tornado, on a hot air balloon, taken to a castle... etc. etc. That stuff had to be done

Wow, millions of movies in existence and this guy finds tenuous similarities between just two... riiiiggghht!

@RamonSuarez - You do understand the slightly cheesy tone and screwball humor in Raimi's films are intentional, right? It's always been his homage to his favorite era of movies in the 30's and 40's type serials and Three Stooges capers, hence the similarities.

Take away the elements of fantasy -- the alternate world, flying creatures, etc. -- either of these movies could also be The Wild Bunch (1969)...

...or Three Amigos. (1986)

I liked both movies..AOD was the much cooler of course.
OZ was basically a kiddie film.

It really seems Raimi ripped off himself..he needs to come up with new material.
