THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2 Begins Production; Casting For Círdan Underway

Prime Video committed to at least two (though more are planned) seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power shortly after the series entered production, and it's now been confirmed that cameras are rolling again in the United Kingdom.

Filming commenced on Monday at Bray Studios, just outside London. Season 1 was shot in New Zealand, but the decision was made to change-up location because The UK is "considered more economical and is also where the company is establishing a multi-show hub."

Season 2, which will also consist of 8 episodes, is set to introduce Círdan. "The Shipwright" hasn't been cast yet (that we know of), but the character should be familiar to Tolkien aficionados, as he was known to be one of the wisest and oldest living Elves in Middle-earth all the way up to the Fourth Age.

The penultimate season 1 instalment is set to hit the streamer this Friday, after episode 6 concluded on a massive cliffhanger with Mount Doom erupting and covering The Southlands (soon to be known as Mordor) in fire and ash.

If you'd like a better idea of what to expect from episode 7, you'll find a promo below.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power stars Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.

One of the best made shows ever...never been a Tolkien nerd but loved the original films. Hated the Hobbit. Not sure why theres so much vitriol around the show...

@MaxPaint - i work in the industry, im talking best made technically. The story, casting etc is a different issue and not one i care about much.

@Vision85 - Well when you make a show you have to factor in a good story, a good cast and a good direction. If the only good thing in a show is the visuals, then it's not a well made show. We are not talking about a painting here where what matters it's the visual projection.

@Vision85 - I haven’t watched yet (will get to it post HOTD so I’m not watching 2 fantasy shows at once), but the complaints I’ve heard are literally about writing and acting. I’m reserving personal judgment, but to me story and acting are always more important than visuals.

@Vision85 - honestly this show makes the Hobbit films feel serviceable

@MaxPaint - yeah of course but you can still enjoy something on a limited basis. Fury Road doesnt have much story and its very silly but the action scenes are a huge achievement in film making. You are coming at it from the other side it seems, due to your unhappiness with the story and cast you cannot appreciate the craft. Maybe Im wrong I don't know you. Either way its all opinions.

@Vision85 - I get that you like the look of the show, but comparing this to Fury Road is an insult "Fury Road doesn't have much story" ... You're confusing dense plot with execution. Fury Road is a well told story. At the end of the day, that's what matters. The action, the cinematography, the staging and blocking, acting, vfx, etc is there to service the story and not the other way.

The problem with the people involved in this show is that they put the cart before the horse. You can make things look beautiful and glossy but at the end of the day if it doesn't have a good story and/or good characters then it's just soulless and ultimately wasted.

The "craft" serves the story. The cinematography, the sound design, the art production, the visual effects; all of those are wasted because it's servicing a subpar story. I would rather take a film/show that has a great story but below average production, then a below average story with great production. Film/TV shows are a storytelling medium at the end of the day. Story is king above all else.

I don't have a super strong opinion on this show, but it's entertaining enough to watch on Friday or Saturday. Not a Tolkien nerd, but I have learned a lot from the dedicated heroes on Quora. I get why book reader people dislike the show so far, but it is what it is. It's at least good enough for me that I prefer this over no show at all.

@clornelas - I'm something of a Tolkien nerd (though less now than in my younger years), and I find RoP to be quite pleasant overall. Fan fiction of a sort for sure, but enjoyable.

I've been saying I enjoy the show for what it is, but truth be told I've been watching an episode in parts.

Which has probably made it a bit more tolerable, Its strange because with the MCU even though it was teased since Ironman I was happy with the wait we had for the Avengers, with Justice League I wish we had got more before the team was established, and Star Wars I could happily watch a show detailing the beginning of the Jedi order.

But with this show I'm kinda like "Right Mordor is basically established now, can we hurry up and get Gondor and the Shire on the go?" Although the later isn't established until way later than the show is set.

Disappointed the show is leaving NZ.

What episode do we think the titular 'Rings of Power' will actually feature? I enjoy the show enough, but it's felt like they're edging us towards reveals of known characters rather than building up new interesting characters. I imagine Amazon will be spending money on more than just effects in season 2 - like some clever writers, or something.

I wonder if they'll give Cirdan his beard? As I recall he's the only elf mentioned to ever have facial hair.

This has truly been one of the most boring shows I've watched and I just hope the second season gets better, because the world of Middle Earth is rich, but this has been a snooze fest.

Great to hear, the show keeps getting better and better each week. I love reading the people who don't watch it always commenting on how much they don't watch it on daily basis lol!! Long may it continue 🤗
