Paramount Pictures (via SFFGazette.com) has released a full trailer for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, featuring plenty of action, magic, mayhem, traps, and several nods to the classic tabletop role-playing game.

This latest teaser finds our band of morally dubious heroes using their wits (and brute strength in Holga's case) to escape all manner of perilous situations, until they face-off against powerful sorceress Sofina and her army of undead minions.

Then, right at the end, we get a first proper look at the immense red dragon known as Embershard (Themberchaud in the game), who should be very familiar to D&D aficionados.

The footage also gives us a brief glimpse of the movie's big (well, biggest) bad, in the form of one of the few characters to be plucked from the lore: a necromantic lich known as Szass Tam.

"This character poses a huge potential threat to not only our characters but the world that they live in," co-director John Francis Daley tells IGN. "And it was crucial to us that the stakes we introduced are not just big and world-threatening but also incredibly personal, and we can't give too much away, but each of our characters are joining this fight for their own particular reasons, and we wanted those to be just as vital as the bigger picture threat."

"A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people," reads the official synopsis. "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure."

Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helmed the project, and wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio. Derek Kolstad (John Wick; The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) has also been hired to write and develop a separate live-action Dungeons & Dragons television show, which was recently given a straight-to-series order for Paramount+.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters March 31, 2023.

Due to the open game license, all the real DnD fans will boycott this. Good luck getting to watch it, even if it is good haha

@bobevanz - Yep. It's sad, really. I liked the first trailer. Haven't watched this one yet. But it looks fun.

But D&D fans are going to rage against this movie now. And probably rightfully so. The new person they got running D&D is really making some bad changes that are nit good for the community.

@bobevanz - My excitement for this film deflated with all the OGL nonsense. It's easy to hop on the boycott wagon when the company producing this movie has actively pushed against its community.

It was going to be a harmless, entertaining Fantasy GotG. I wasn't expecting Citizen Kane or anything--just a mindless fantasy adventure. Now, this film is the last stand for Hasbro and I just want to watch it fall to pieces. It's a shame, because I think that D&D could have taken advantage of the brand recognition to get to those "under-monetized" aspects to be profitable, but a vocal majority of the built-in fanbase wants nothing to do with the movie anymore.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a company wanting to make money off of its product.

However, that morality line has been crossed as they have gone back on their word for contract promises, come after their 3rd party puplishers, actively lied in press releases, and directly condecended to the community. Their most recent reveal of documentation is trying to ban other virtual tabletops from creating animations, as if to say that Wizards of the Coast should have sole-claim digital effects. All this in the span of a few weeks!

This is no longer trying to make money off the product. It's trying to bleed competition dry and decimate them--completely forgetting the fact that Wizards of the Coast are the ones who enabled/encouraged that competition in the first place.

Won't be a D&D movie unless it flops...and it's looking that way.

@Jacory - I mean the movie looks watchable and probably would have done ok if it came out 5 years ago. But I feel audiences are pretty picky now, especially after the pandemic. If it's VFX heavy and it's not a comic book movie, it's not likely to get much interest... general audience-wise.

Actually a pretty good trailer. I never played a D&D game in my life and I didn't know how this movie would catch my interest, but it did. Also, it seems to have some pretty solid VFX.

@ProfessorWhy - the plot is 100% a GotG story. Group of thieves with varying superpowers have to save the world after they stole an object for the wrong guy.
TheSuperMex
TheSuperMex - 1/23/2023, 1:09 PM
@Demigods - never played the game but from what I’ve seen, the movie captures the spirit how a lot of players play the game. Having banter and jokes as existed long before Marvel made movies.
Deklipz
Deklipz - 1/23/2023, 1:31 PM
@Havenless - Not to be pedantic but it’s more so the generic starting point for thousands of DND campaigns than a GotG story. The trailer literally feels like watching events from a tabletop campaign brought to life.

UncleHarm1 - 1/23/2023, 2:39 PM
@Demigods - That was my first thought watching this trailer lol. Hopefully they just put all the cringe jokes in the trailer and the movie actually takes itself a bit more seriously
Demigods
Demigods - 1/23/2023, 4:24 PM
@TheSuperMex - It's not JUST the jokes and humor generously sprinkled throughout... it's the heavy reliance on CGI, the angles of the trailer, the fight scenes, all of it. It just feels like someone made a medieval magic themed Marvel movie.

@Havenless - Damn I was gonna say this but you beat me to it lol. The description for this movie is the same as GOTG "A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people"

Looks fun

I play a lot of D&D, and the energy (at least from the trailers) seems to catch the spirit of some of the more fun campaigns I've been a part of.

The most fun I've ever had in a campaign is when the group takes everything just seriously enough to not outright break character, but still have fun with the sillier elements of fantasy.

I'm kinda hoping this movie has a fair bit of meta humor (have some lines like "let's see if we can fight it", or "well that was much easier/harder than it should have been"). Something acknowledging the elements of chance associated with D&D, and the idea that there is a differentiating line between NPCs and players. Maybe have a DM "narrator" or something to that effect. Lean into the game element a bit.

Looks fun, who cares about whatever D&D fans moan about?
TheRose
TheRose - 1/23/2023, 3:07 PM
@CamtonoOfBeskar - I don't disagree--the movie looks like a lot of fun and the effects in the trailers looks dynamic, exciting, and entertaining.

However, what D&D fans are "moaning" actually matters a great deal to its community of content creators, especially since this case could set precedent for the rules of perpetuity in contract law. This "moaning" is about is a direct contradiction of D&D's own self-created contract. Personally, I don't believe that entities should be permitted to go back on their word once written into contract law, but maybe you're on the other side of that debate.

The fact stands that without the positive growth of the game in the past 10 years, there is little chance that this film would have ever seen the light of day. The Twitch leak, for example, showed studios that Critical Role (A D&D podcast) was a multi-million dollar enterprise. It's natural that bigger studios would like to get a piece of that action and to cultivate that interest. It should be in the company's interest to support that massive and growing fanbase, but instead, they've gone the route of video game companies with microtransactions and monopolies.

So if you do see it, I hope you enjoy the film. Perhaps excited viewers like you will help change their minds on how to treat their customers, because the current fan-base's feedback seems to be falling on deaf ears.

@CamtonoOfBeskar - Also, this isn't a slight against you, but I have to laugh at the irony of your comment when juxtaposed against the other comments sections on this website.

Listen... I enjoy everything D&D and I miss playing TTRPGs but this Hasbro move with the OGL thing was awful. Those excecs should be fired.

I don't think I will support anything related with D&D, WoTC or Hasbro.

The movie looks okay-ish but if I want something with this vibe I rather watch The Legend of Vox Machina. There are many good stories to be told using the D&D lore but this looks that will be plagued with stupid jokes and stupid story.
