PJ's Hobbit was very self indulgent and stretching it to 3 movies is really hurting this adaptation. From including stuff that doesn't fit the story of the Hobbit, to making stuff up to take up time, and turning every scene into a big action scene, PJ is really messing this one up. And that's on top of the effects that look far more fake than the ones ten years ago from LotR. The movie looks like a cartoon. I really wanted to like it, thought it would work, but it didnt. I was hoping that somehow they would turn it around for the next one, but turning the barrels into an action scene makes it clear the trend will continue. I know things need to be expanded and fleshed out, changes happen in different media, but there's a wrong way and a right way and making every piece of the book into an action scene is te wrong way.

You guys are confusing PJ's artistic decisions with Tolkein's tonal differences. The Hobbit was a child's book, a much more lighthearted and fun romp than the LOTR was. So the "gold light" coloring and the "roller coaster" action scenes is partly PJ (who is very much a kid at heart) trying to capture the youthful feel of the Hobbit and give it it's own tone, while also trying to connect it in the same vein as LOTR.

If it was less comical and fun you would be complaining that it was too dark. Don't get me wrong, I could've gone without most of that underground theme park action scene, but I get why it's like that. Oh well, the rest of the movie is phenomenal.

*oh and the trolls were British sounding fools cause that's what they were like in the book. That scene was about as close to the source material as it gets

@kevberg, the trolls dialogue, names and their characterizations of those three, were exactly how they were in the book the hobbit. so while there is a difference between them and lotr, it would be majorly going against source material to change them up like that
